Refusing Kibble & Strange Behavior After Spay

I hope someone can give me some encouragement and/or helpful suggestions. Our 2-year-old girl was spayed last week. We also opted for a gastropexy and had that done at the same time. She is healing up nicely and has had no issues with the surgery. She still has another week of being stuck inside to ensure the incision is healed.
The first odd thing is, she stopped eating her kibble. This dog has always been very food motivated and before, would eat anything. She used to devour it indiscriminately, but now, she won't eat it. We do make a homemade topper for added nutrition that we sparingly add, and she will devour that. (It's organic venison, green beans and pumpkin puree from my garden.) and I've also noticed, she will eat soft foods, but now, crunchy foods and treats, she doesn't want. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not. (NOTE: I looked at her teeth and gums and don't see any sores or irritation of any kind from surgery, etc.)

We feed her the high-performance kibble from Voyager Dog Food, so I think it's pretty good food, nutrition wise. This morning, I had to mix the topper with the kibble and HAND-FEED her to get her to eat something. She won't eat from the bowl, but she'll eat from my hand. The first few days after surgery, she would drink water from my hand. She was barely drinking water, too and that worried me at the time. The vet said to put broth in her water. I tried chicken broth and got her to drink a little, but she'll only drink about 1-2 cups a day at first. I get that she's stuck inside for 2 weeks and hasn't exercised like normal, so her food and water needs have decreased, but it worries me. Today, I got her to drink about 2-3 more cups, so that is great, but she still won't eat a lot of food. I'm hoping this is just normal from surgery and the antibiotics and pain meds.

She totally refused pill pockets for her meds, so hubby started giving her deer heart and chicken chunks to hide the pills. I think that spoiled her, so that could be one of the culprits. I know these dogs are ridiculously smart and will play you to see what they can get away with. I just don't understand why she'd become so picky overnight. I'm guessing the surgery and change in her routine and being confined inside are also culprits.

Lastly, she is exhibiting what I'm assuming is nesting behavior; also, from the spay and lack of hormones? I know dogs don't go through menopause like we do, but she is definitely going through something. She has been pulling all of her toys around her, especially the little yellow chicken. She won't go anywhere in the house or out to potty without the little chicken! She licks it and all the other toys, like they're her puppies which is something she's never done before. I feel for her so much! Did anyone else's dobie do this after a spay? I don't know what else to do except lay in the floor with her and snuggle. She seems to want more of that, so I'm happy to oblige and give her all the pets and love she wants. She's been really clingy, more so than usual and that's ok.

Any advice or suggestions on the food or behavior? Thank you in advance.

I have read, but don't know how common it is, but timing of spays can "lock" hormones in place. If your girl was spayed during the "whelping/puppy time" which would be about 60 + days after the end of last heat, then she might still experience those hormones. I'm curious because this is fairly new information and I've never actually known of any dogs that experience the "cycle hormones" after spay.

As for suggestions, when my girl had false pregnancies after heat cycles I discouraged the behavior, removed all toys and discouraged nesting. The longer she continues the behavior the more fixated she will become. Think of it as a stillborn litter. Take the stuffy toys away, let her know there are no puppies, do some training in something she's never done before like a trick dog tricks or rally signs or a new obedience command that takes a lot of concentration with brain work and involvement with you.

That's very interesting. Her 3rd heat cycle started April 12th and ended about May 1st so she was definitely not past 60 days. We'll try those suggestions. Thank you.

is she still taking meds from the spay surgery?
She will get her last dose of antibiotics and NSAID tonight. She was on Trazadone and Tramadol. We stopped the Trazadone after day three because she started sleeping through the night ok and has been relatively calm while the incision heals up. Tramadol, we stopped around day five for the same reason. We didn't give her much of either as I don't like to medicate my dog unless it's absolutely necessary (only to keep her from hurting herself.) Are you thinking those meds could be messing up her appetite?

Interesting. Our girl was spayed on May 15 and she had a gastropexy at the same time and nothing changed with anything.

That's really interesting and something I've never heard either. Maybe that's why they recommend a spay be 3 or so months after a heat cycle?

Yes. All those meds and/or anesthesia can potentially change their appetite. Not only cause them to be not hungry but can change the way they taste certain foods. Some foods may no longer have a worthwhile taste.
Really kind of wonder if there is any kind of unusual discomfort from the gastropexy.

All in all, not too much you can do but wait for all the meds to get out of her system and wait for her to get used to her stomach being tacked. Have to keep her fed with nutrition but at same time don’t spoil her- good luck. They do have appetite enhancers but I would be reluctant to treat existing symptoms with more medication.

I was wondering too if she may just have a belly ache from both feeling 'in heat' in addition to the surgery still....and that the kibble is too heavy maybe? And the soft, fresh food is easier to eat for her. Keep us posted on how she is doing ;)

You all were right. It was definitely the meds messing with her stomach. Around noon today, she finally ate her kibble and topper, like normal, from the bowl. She's been drinking more water and seems to be in better spirits which is a huge relief. I'm hopeful she will be back to her normal crazy self very soon... and I wouldn't have her any other way. :D:hearteyes:

Thanks again for all the replies and advice. It's great to have a forum where you can ask questions and get information. This has been quite the learning experience.

Awww….
Helllll…..
Yeah!!!!

Always enjoy hearing a good positive outcome! Makes my day.

I would not feed her a full meal today and probably tomorrow- maybe 1/2-3/4 bowl. Would want her stomach to normalize more and not over do it.

On the last there are some useful past threads on false pregnancy: here is one-

Never had one reuse kibble but DID have one that would reuse hotdog bits and high value treat stuff occasionally.

Not joking here - I watched that bitch eat the same darn hotdog 3 freaking times in 30 minutes! :)

Ate the 2 hotdog halves (sucked down without even chewing), spit up both halves a few minutes later in her crate before eating them again...

And then a few minutes later spit them up for the second time (still completely intact hotdog halves) before finally chewing them up for her third eating of them! :)

Both her sister and I were impressed seeing that girl reuse the same darn hotdog pieces that many times like she did... :)

Yay! My girl is totally back to normal, crunching and munching everything in sight again. No more nesting or weird behavior either. My breeder said it was definitely a hormonal oddity and nothing to worry about. Whew!

That's great news!

It's odd with our girl since Elroy is acting like she's coming in heat but of course she was spayed in mid May. She was due to come in heat soon so maybe he has an internal clock too?
