A big thumbs up to you @Rits for all your hard work! It pays off. I don't think Asha will ever be a pet model, but I DO have control and she will mind me. Some stuff is def hard-wired and just has to be managed and you are all aces on your management and dedication. I've not done any personal protection/bite work with a helper, just play with the tug like you saw those photos a while back. Today she's in the backseat of my pick up and I rolled down the passenger window at a traffic light to give a homeless gal with a dog a $5. The lady trotted over to the truck window and Asha just about came unglued, exploded barking. Probably startled the gal, but she was grateful for the money but backed off the window quickly. The one day I didn't put the e-collar on. So yet another one chalked up in Ashas mind. I swear she keeps track. (Asha: "I got yelled at to leave it, but hey, it was worth it to watch that lady run away from the truck!") I'll be hosed if I ever get pulled over by a cop and she doesn't have an e-collar on. LOL, not funny. She's actually pretty good if we are doing a job in public, heeling exercises, nose work, anything that has her focused. Hanging out? She just scans the world for something to bark at.

 That was probably exactly her thoughts too. Do you have Asha in a kennel? Ripley doesn't come unglued, yet... but she does give deep growls and barks at people outside the car when we are sitting in the parking lot, again typically men. I let her then tell her quiet and she so far minds. I'm just being mindful of her change and reactions as shes maturing to people that aren't a threat, minding their own business. I let her look, but then she has to stop staring cause she's always waiting for them to stare back... "c'mon, I dare you" :guns:

@Rits Rubie does NOT like to be stared at by men, either. I can tell when she's getting to her limit and I'm like HEY DINGO SHINY THINGS

Someone from our agility class (seems like a lifetime ago!) who Rubie knew and had no issues with was being silly with her and was staring at her in her crate and made a face at her. She let out a BIG BARK and got him shook. Nicest guy in the world but all the women in the class were like, Don't stare at chicks!

The ONLY way this works if is Moose is there first and Rubie decides to join; never, ever the other way around

My truck has a "half" back seat, one of those with a half door to get in & out. I cut plyboard to cover the seat up to the backs of the front seats so it's a total flat surface, covered it & has a bed on one end. Also used a crate divider (metal grid) between the bucket seat backs so she couldn't climb thru to the front seats. So actually she is locked in a kennel of sorts, but can put her head between the back of my seat and the window to put her head out (or on my shoulder sometimes! ) Likewise, she can put her head out the passenger window if I open it. Backseat windows are just pop open vents. ALSO likewise, I can't reach her, her collar or be able to reinforce a verbal correction unless she has the e-collar on. I love this truck, but it really isn't a great dog vehicle. The Dog Mobile is an older Honda Odyssey with all the back seats removed, two crates for the two dogs.

I love this story - I wonder if bitches have more of a thing about being stared at than dogs?

The first time I heard Asha growl was at the vets for her puppy shots and a man came over to ask where she got her ears done because he had Great Danes and couldn't find anyone local. As we talked about ears he was talking to me but staring at Asha. She was so little she was on the bench next to me and she started growling, I looked at her and she had the hardest stare going on with this guy. And yes, I did the "hey look shiny things!" distraction and finally the man walked off. I was pretty much taken off guard, I'd never expected a puppy that age to look at someone 3 feet away and start growling. I instantly felt like a failed owner that she had to take up for herself and didn't look to me for guidance but I've forgiven myself since then after realizing this is just her hard-core independent personality. I do tell anyone who doesn't know her to not stare at her. Dogs present the same thing. Any dog that ignores her she doesn't mind, but if we're at a park and a dog is 100 feet away staring at her, she gets into the "bring it on" mode staring right back. She's really good now about refocusing on me, especially if on leash and we are in training mode, but it's constant work.
I think Ripley and Rubie are examples of very well socialized & trained dogs with just enough badass to let the world know they're Dobes.

Last Tuesday was a gorgeous day in the forties and it was the first time I was able to bring Kali out to the barn with me. Her curious nature almost got her in trouble!

I was watching as she was checking out the mound of snow that my husband had plowed by the corral.

Oh, no, no, no you don't want to do that! You know that is Virgin Snow back there and it's almost over your head?!

Live and learn, little girl! Don't worry, I was ready to rescue her but she made it back like a champ!20210223_145652(0).webp

That sounds like a decent set up for what you have to work with! I only ask because I figure if she's contained it would put any cops at least a little at ease. I was worried for you for that aspect but I think you will be fine. Now let's just hope none show up unannounced to your house, that's another story that always worries me and is always on the back of my mind with having dogs, especially guardian breeds.

Go to your local Sheriff’s office and ask permission to do some environmental training with her there when the Deputies have shift changes. That’s what I do here and neither Bogie or Bacall had any problems with police or anyone in uniform. I am doing it with Legend as well. I have my friends that are Deputies stop by my house in uniform and walk inside just to reinforce that LEOs are not the enemy.
Bacall loves the LEOs here and when out in public, she makes a beeline over to them for attention.

Anyone comes to our house, announced or not, the dogs are leashed up to meet & greet every single time. And no one has ever showed up that we didn't see them coming. Asha lets me know if a realtor shows the house next door and that's 5 acres away. And even at that distance if either dog (they are never outside together unless we're going for a hike) is running the fence & barking because someone drove up next door, I can whistle once - the loud fingers in the mouth whistle - and she comes barreling back. I was just thinking how embarrassing it would be to drive through a check point on the highway and for Asha to want to bark in his/her face. There are several since we are close to Mexico - you have to roll down your window and patrol asks if you're a citizen, they almost always have a dog presumably narcotics walk around any suspicious vehicle. There is one permanent check point between me and the city I plan to go to for IGP training, but at least I know where it is!

Great idea! I don't know anyone there, but I guess it sure wouldn't hurt to befriend them!

Does your Sheriff’s Dept have substations?
I went in and spoke to the receptionist and told her I was training my dobies and that I wanted to expose them to Deputies in uniform and then asked her to have any of the K9 officers call me regarding exposure. Surprisingly I had 3 Deputies call and say they would be happy to oblige me. I could do both morning and night shift so B&B could work in the dark as well as during the day.
