Oh thank you for this explanation. Her breeder did as her father had 1 gene.

Now the test will see how quickly she bleeds, the one the vet does, it’s a gum prick. I forget the name of the test. I guess to ensure when in surgery, if she is a bleeder they will be extra prepared.

The vet just called to discuss it more and it’s only 48 dollars, whew not bad, we will do it in March. Then aim for spay mid April. We have a Catskills trip planned around then, so after that we will get her spayed. I want her to be able to run in the woods this time!

Then she’ll have time off to chill and heal. Definitely will stress me out having her in surgery

Btw she stuck to me like glue at the vet, wouldn’t leave the chair once we got into the exam room. She started cobbing my shoulder lol. Didn’t pee this time at all!
It was cute to see that she was by my side and only moved if I did. Mommy’s girl.

Glad to hear she is doing so well these days, Glory is 64 pounds and 5 1/2 years old. I have only had 2 other females, and both of them were between 65-68 pounds. Some of our doberman friends let their girls get up to 80 pounds; same build as Glory, so in my eyes; they are heavy. Those people think I am 'starving' her....so I just tell them that we like our Dobes to look like dobermans. For a breed that has so many health concerns, I think it's wise to keep them fit as opposed to overweight.

Thank you @Two Dobes she’s been doing really well on her new food plan. Today she weighed 65 on the dot! Good to know it is average for the lady Dobermans. I am in agreement with you on keeping them slim and fit. I want her to remain healthy and fit. She would eat all day of she could lol

She’s eating a total of 3 cups of holistic select chicken and oatmeal, I add a total of 6 ounces of ground lean turkey or ground lean beef, natures farmacy complete, and pumpkin - she eats 3 x a day so I even it all out. She gets fruit and veggies as toppers too or snacks. Still has natural pb sometimes. So far no issues and stools normal, no gas, or rumbling.

It sounds like you found they key to what works for her so that's great.

They want to do a Von Willebrand blood swab before her spay. She’ll be spayed in April.

Please yes do the VWD test. For Katyusha, her test showed up as being what her vet called "worrisome numbers " but also said that "now we can stock on hand the things we know could save her life " the difference between life or bleeding out apparently is just the knowing.

Pepper goes to the vet Tuesday for her gum nick test. Spoke with the vet yesterday and she said it’s quick and hopefully will tell us where Pepper falls with VWD. If not she will need to send the test out.
its not an issue and we can go on with the spay and no extra stress.
Going under is enough to send me into a tailspin.

Please let us know those test results!? Hoping for the best, and that the nick test can easily show that she can manage bleeding on her own. But keep in mind, too, that even if she can't, solutions are available as long as you just know what to expect. You are soooo doing right by Pepper to find out ahead of time and I applaud that.

If Pepper is a declared carrier (1 gene) there should be zero bleeding complications. They can only be affected if they have 2 genes and your Embark test would have declared her as "affected". As you said in a previous post Embark stated that the ONLY thing you would have to be concerned about is breeding her to another carrier or affected dog. Even then it wouldn't harm Pepper, just affect her puppies.. Since the gum nick is a simple test and may give you greater peace of mind it's OK to do it, but I don't understand why a vet would even encourage you to if you told or showed them the Embark results.

I'm absolutely with you on the stress of surgery. Years ago I took Asha in for an eye watering, thinking they'd flush it out and give me some drops. Nope, she had a splinter embedded in her eyeball and she had to be put under to get it out. I was a nervous wreck for two hours and probably cried. We'll be here holding good juju for you & Pepper when she goes to get spayed.

Thank you for the explanation as it confuses the crap out of me. Yes, she is a carrier per her tests as a pup from the breeder. Her father also is a career and her mother is clear. I have their paperwork too.

I know I was a little confused why they want to do the test, but I’m guessing to cover all ends. Worried me when I left as to why they want to do it, but to get double confirmation she’s good to go will help my crazy a$* lol

Oh my that sounds incredibly stressful for you both! Painful for Asha as well. I would have cried too and probably had my Bp through the roof!

We did our first real run together today. We’ve been working on it - like not to stop and attack me while running lol. She did great! I’ve been sprinting alone and need to work on distance. It was so much fun today with her, we both were very happy!
