Pepper šŸŒ¶ļø

How did Pepper's spay go @MichiH? Olive's is coming up next week and I'm starting to fret.
Well, I am embarrassed to say it, I cancelled it. I started weighing it all out and figured I can wait she’s 19.5 months. I don’t want to deter you and you have more experience than me anyway, but too many thoughts and I backed out. The family agrees it’s fine to wait and are on board to handle her heats for now. I hate being crazy šŸ˜

That's not crazy at all and I don't blame you for waiting.

Olive is 2 years, 2 months so that's old enough considering I don't want to deal with two intact dogs in the house.

I went through all the trouble to back out šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø, but I have a vet now that I so far feel good about at least.

I completely understand and with two intact I’d do just the same as soon as I could.

I figure reevaluate at 2 years and see how it’s going.

You are not crazy.
UC Davis has a done a review of breeds in 2020, updated 2024
on "when to spay, vs risk of not/why" and for dobe females its 2 years to allow full growth with benefit of hormones, vs health risks, ex: pyometra if un-spayed.

Just giving you a heads up here that I am going to be 'that guy' that is constantly preaching about the longevity studies that compare intact vs spayed AND be the one constantly talking about how easy it is to underwear train a female Doberman so that there is never any sort of messes inside the home.

If me doing a tiny bit of extra work with underwear stuff and heat cycles can buy me even a single year more of longevity - I am putting in that extra work without a second thought!

The only time underwear training a Doberman has EVER been difficult or a slight problem for me was with the one girl that did not like to wait very long to go pee IF she had a safe place to go do that at inside (pee pad training more or less).

That dog has only a single ride on the 'merry go round' of life. If I can squeak that ride out for even the smallest of bits longer...

That's perfectly acceptable. I'm beginning to consider spaying now that we're going on 6 years, mainly after watching Reckless have to get spayed at age 10 due to hormones gone wonky at age 9 and the fact that age makes it more of a trauma just like humans don't recover as fast from anesthesia & surgeries.

I think that’s where we are at now. We have time and having a heat hasn’t been an issue for her or us.

My biggest concern is pyometra since it is life threatening. From what I've found it doesn't occur as much in younger intact girls and I like to wait until they're at least 2 to spay. Of course like I said, dealing with 2 intact dogs, it's just the logical choice for us.

Same that also worries me as she gets older.

and not to forget spay incontinence.

There have been aggression studies that show a chance of an INCREASE in aggression in altered females.

Not something I would want to test out for myself on a dog if that dog was already one that I considered to be slightly closer to the dominant / aggressive side of the spectrum.

Yes..
Thank goodness.
2 tablets- 1 morning 1evening
One $80 bottle last one month.

$80 a month is definitely worth it. Completely eliminates her spay incontinence.

I is new here so not sure and asking - Was that a result of a spay surgery?

Good grief that is a lot of money over time...

Yes, it seems urinary incontinence happens with female Dobermans who become spayed. Freyja was spayed a little over 2yrs age and then developed urinary incontinence a year later.

I will definitely spay Pepper, but I’m going to wait until the fall now. I’ll be better prepared too. She’ll be 2 in September and it’ll be the fall better to keep her calmer then.

Glad to hear that Freyja is doing better and the medicine is helping her!
