Pepper 🌶️

I was going to say something about the hose play, but never did. I mentioned it years ago when Asha got nuts about the water hose. She didn't have loose stools but the intensity of the hose became crazy-making. As much fun as it seems to be for them it is mentally frustrating because they cannot grasp it. Biting water gives them nothing to grip or shake. The laser light toys that were so popular for cats years ago were found to be detrimental to their mental health. Prey drive needs to be rewarded with a catch, hold and "kill" (shaking the rag).

With Peppers stool afterward I'd attribute it to extreme stress and call the water hose play history.
Never would I ever have thought of the aspect of nothing to grip and shake. My dogs hate the hose but that doesn't mean future ones will, so thank you for bringing this into the light, @Ravenbird !

That's a very good point. A flirt pole would be a great substitute and I do let them catch it a few times during a session so they can feel that sense of accomplishment.

Wasn't there also something about them getting too much water from a hose play like that?? I can't remember if I read that here or elsewhere. But it's just like swimming in a lake. I heard they can ingest too much water and it creates a problem? Somebody help me remember. Was it actual drowning or just something that upsets the tummy like Pepper?

I always thought it was awesome that dogs love the hose. I've never had a dog really like the hose at all. Most of the time they're like, " don't point that thing at me!" 😆 But I can see it becoming an obsession if they really do love it. Like the laser pointing thing. I heard about that a long time ago and I never wanted to start that. I can totally see that becoming an obsession. Anything that seems geared toward an obsession is something I avoid. Especially if I can't even water my flowers without my dog wanting to interact.

It seems sad to take that away from Pepper but if its detrimental maybe replacing with the flirt pole would be better. A toy on the end of it would probably make it a lot of fun. I know Annie loves the flirt Pole even with nothing on the end of it! But even that I try not to overdo because I feel she might be obsessed with it. I keep it standing in the corner of our gazebo and sometimes she goes over there and just looks at it and then looks at me like, "hey, let's play.!" I haven't done it in a long time just because there hasn't been a good time. And even with that I try not to do it very long because it seems like you're just going in circles I'm afraid it's stressful on the limbs.

Honestly, there's so many things we worry about!🤦‍♀️ Annie loves to play fetch with the Chuck it ball and she gets a good run in, going pretty fast and far. But we give her lots of time to catch her breath so as not to overdo.

Agree on there are so many things we worry about! I knew a border collie who loved to swim in a big pool, and after too many hours of ball retrieving in the pool became very ill with too much water consumtion. She recovered, but it was a long night in the ER. Falcon loves to try and 'catch' the hose water too....when I bath him, I just have to say LEAVE IT, as I hose him down. Also when I water my flowers.....I only let him try and 'get it' a few times before I make him quit so I can get about bathing :)

I think I've heard it could be both but I haven't done it, except with our Boxer. These dogs would be like Annie and say "don't you dare get me wet". LOL

Have to brag about Pepper. We went to the beach for vacation and she did so well! Knew her yard and stayed in it, acclimated to the house asap, and when out for walks she minded her business - walking like a big girl.

We did our first real run too, 2 miles it was so much fun!

Very proud of her! We keep talking about how she just fits right in like another child, but one that listens lolIMG_9518.webpIMG_9513.webpIMG_9511.webpIMG_9509.webpIMG_9507.webpIMG_9519.webp

Some more photos of Pepper on her big girl beach vacation.
She makes me so happy, seeing her enjoy herself too - is the best. IMG_9556.webp

Soccer tournament this weekend and Pepper did great! So did my son haha.
I was really happy with how she conducted herself and even fell asleep during one of the games. I’ve been keeping her in training sign on to deter the can I pet her questions…

One of the parents on our team told me he doesn’t like any animals, but he likes Pepper and how well I take care of her. Which made me feel really good - hearing that.

All the hard-work is paying off and it shows thanks DCF!!!
