Yeah even at the vet offices I worked at when someone would come in with a gland expression...I would do my best to avoid being the helper LOL two things that make me gag... anal glands and when a cat would come in with a wound infection...I remember this cat coming in with his cheek all swollen the vet had barely touched it and it POPPED and started draining....OMG PUKE and the smell ok sorry getting off topic

Ew yes, I've had to open up my cat's tail before and it was HORRIBLE! Popped right open, just like you said! LMBO!
Other update: I DID try the baby oil this afternoon after both my kiddos were dry from their bath. They smell HEAVENLY!! And are SO shiny, too! Not greasy at all. Thanks, guys!!
In fact, I think this is the "trick" my groomers use with Pepper. I always tell hubby I cannot get Pepper as clean and soft and good-smelling as the groomer does. Just a bit ago I realized, that's the same smell he comes home from there with! Huh!

Most Dobes don't smell like much of anything unless they've gotten into something nasty.
I bathe my dogs very infrequently--two or three times a year--only when they are being shown in conformation do I bathe them more frequently. While that's going on they get bathed before any show weekend.
Here're some tips. The metallic smell as several people have already commented is almost always anal glands. Generally Dobes don't have a high incidence of anal gland problems. But all it takes is one drop of anal sac fluid on the butt of the dog and you'll smell it for days. A normal dog will express some fluid from the anal sacs each time they poop. A good trick for getting rid of the anal sac fluid smell is to wipe the butt off with a gauze pad saturated in witch hazel. Kills the smell almost immediately. But make sure you aren't just overlooking an infection, overfilled or clogged anal glands before you just resort to witch hazel.
The other most common dog odor in Dobes is a vaguely 'dirty dog' smell and it is almost always from an underlying skin infection--usually due to staph. Look for a dog with tiny pimples, tiny scabs, some hair loss around armpits, inside thighs and chest.
Unlike hounds and sporting dogs who often have heavy oil production to protect them while working in the field or in water--Dobes rarely have the sort of smell that say a Lab might have.
