Little dude won’t gain weight.

A lot has been said about raw diet vs kibble....before you change, YOU need to research diets, ask questions, get your kitchen set up, and have a plan ready to execute...it's takes commitment.

I would add research handling raw meat safely to the list. We have friends that feed raw and are so careless about it. I can't believe some of the things I've seen while at their house.
A few examples:
Tossing the dog a nice meeting bone while laying in his bed. A couple of hours later I see their grandson curled up in that same bed sleeping.

While preparing individual meals for the freezer, blood drips on the floor and they wipe it up with a paper towel. Next thing you know here comes the cat walking through that spot then all over the house including on top of the table. I should add shortly after that they asked if we wanted to stay for dinner. Ummm :censored:
NO!
Then there is the fact that at any given time you can find half rotted chicken parts all over their backyard.

Each dobies diet is different pick what works best for you guys and a diet as @GOD'S GRACE basically put it that you can keep up FOREVER  (but seriously tho) don’t wanna start a high dollar diet and later can’t maintain it or even a diet that takes a lot of prep and then your schedule change and limit your available time, not saying you couldn’t just something to think about.

Well said....It all comes down to commitment...as it does in life...half measures avail less than superior results....that's why I always say "Do your research before making a commitment"!

That being said, many dogs live long health lives on high quality kibble, however, after I did my research I committed to raw....It's not for all. Nobody here will call you names...Just do your best considering time, quality, and health of your pet.

Good luck

I’d love to go to a raw diet but until my schedule frees up more and can stay that way I wouldn’t be able to fully commit to it there would be to many days in the week where I will have to rush and feed him or get in late and rush to prep his meal just not something I wanna do when dealing with raw as @GennyB just told us you must HANDLE raw with special attention my 3yr old and my dobie don’t leave much room for spare attention  but high quality kibble don’t leave much room for spare change either :banghead:

Something is really upsetting him. May have tried to increase food too fast. Whatever it is until you figure out the cause (might need a vet trip at this point to avoid dehydration and check everything out) I'd fast for 24hrs, then feed boiled chicken and rice until the diarrhea subsides, then slowly reintroduce kibble over 3 meals.

Lordy, I just felt like puking!!
Ummm.....no, just no!
How do people live like that without getting deathly ill. I worry about cross contamination all the time with having birds, dogs and cats and feeding raw to the dogs and cats. I don’t allow the birds to be touched without hands being sanitized. I don’t handle the dogs and cats without immediately washing my hands. I do not feed any animals in the kitchen. The dogs’ raw meals are ground up including the bones so they do not drag their food around the house. They polish their bowls and have never gotten the raw food outside of their dishes. I rotate fresh water bowls several times a day. All pet food and water dishes are run through the dishwasher at night.
I even wash the raw food pouches before putting in the garbage.
I don’t want my hubs or me sick because I was careless handling raw meat or other foods.

Instead the vet gave shots.
So the pup went to the vet and he gave vaccines instead of addressing the diarrhea? I would be looking for a new vet!!
Vaccines are only supposed to be given to healthy animals, not ones suffering with diarrhea.
Metronidazole is the antibiotic they generally use for diarrhea but they need to determine the cause of the diarrhea.:furious:

Wow, called the Vet explained that he’s had diarrhea all night after he got his shots and that he’s been trembling and the woman responds with “and?” I had to tell her somethings wrong with him and that it’s not normal.

I brought in a sample of his diarrhea and pictures of all his other bowel movements. The vet looked at them and said “that’s not a concern it’s not watery”

I will refrain from cursing but that person would get an earful from me.
Perhaps the dangers of a puppy becoming dehydrated, extended reactions to vaccines, perhaps classes on how to speak with clients.
Get an appointment and have a serious conversation with the vet. You deserve better than what they are giving!!
Now I am ANGRY.:mad::machinegun::tap::furious:

I bet he gave the combo vaccines too. This really irritates me when vets do this. :banghead:
Just looked at the receipt, he got DHPP, Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Pyrantal, Influemza and fecal Ova.

Seems like way too many shots and they only said 2 when I asked about what shots he’s getting.

They told me to bring him in and they’re going to hold him for observation. I’m extremely upset right now. All dude wants to do is poop and sleep.

That's a pretty dismissive response from the vet and his staff. If the owner is worried about something, they should be worried too. I suppose they see people over reacting all the time (I'm guilty of that myself!), but a young pup is less able to handle all this. Can you find another vet? Preferably a holistic one. Sometimes you gotta try a few vets before you find a good one.

@Tropicalbri's can he give immodium to help slow down the diarrhea until he finds a new vet?

Leptospirosis
Absolutely NO NEED to give this one at all. Only Core vaccines should have been given and those should have been spaced out.
Bordetella and Flu vaccine should never have been given at his age. You are not taking the pup in public or boarding him.
Pyrantal is a dewormer and can cause stomach upset, diarrhea and vomiting.
Why is he deworming if there were no parasites? Did he tell you he found parasites in the fecal exam?

I would not recommend giving this on top of everything else he has swamping his system.
Make sure he drinks water, don’t feed him anything until this evening and boil some chicken and rice for him and you can give 1/2tsp of pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie blend) over his meals for a couple feedings. If diarrhea has not subsided by morning, he needs to be seen by a vet that knows what they are doing!!

Coccidia and Giardia will cause diarrhea but different anti parasiticals are used for those parasites.
Geez, definitely find another vet and talk to them about your concerns. Never allow a vet to give vaccines without you approving them and knowing exactly what is being given. Single vaccines spaced out are the best. It will give the pups system time to deal with the virus one at a time.
