not absorbing food

can anyone confirm if my dog cannot absorb nutrients?

he eats almost 7 cups a day, you can see the outline of his ribs slightly and his shoulder blades stick out, when i touch them they have no fat covering. when he eats his belly covers the ribs but you can still see them if that makes sense. then by the morning when i come feed him and clean his kennel he poops out huge pies that smell and it’s back to seeing his ribs and shoulders. his energy levels are also low and he can only play for about 30 mins.

if so does anyone have any home remedies or take this up with the vet? his diet is only kibble, he will only eat victor hi pro and that’s the only kibble his weight will maintain- any other kibble i try he drops weight fast and he gets very skinny and eventually won’t eat his kibble. i’ve had trouble with him in the past with adding in toppers or vitamins so i keep it simple with just kibble and i only see a slight weight gain when he eats just kibble rather than when he gets toppers or whatever other protein i add in.

out of all of my dobermans he’s the only one that has this issue and i’ve never seen a dog’s shoulder blades stick out with no fat covering.

he will be 2 in may, 95 pounds comes from europe with heavy show lines so he is very thick and big boned from genetics which is why his weight is so heavy. you can definitely see how underweight he is so he is not just naturally slim .

A photo or two would be very helpful, but it does sound like a lot of food, a lot of poop and a slim dog. Kibble is notorious for producing lots of poop. You might try soaking it in chicken or beef broth for an hour before serving to add some calories and fat and insure he's getting enough water to go with that 7 cups of kibble. Does he drink lots of water? That much kibble could be very dehydrating to his system.

Ribs that are slightly visible can be ok with active work and muscle to show they are healthy, but backbone and shoulder blades sound too skinny. Lack of energy is not a great sign either. Again, photos would help, but I'm leaning toward a checkup with the vet. Seems like someone here on the forum had a dog that wasn't processing nutrients.

Vet checked?

Are the large poops formed diarrhea or loose like mud pies?

Lots of kibble (especially the very cheap brands) fed dogs will have large poops because of all the cheap fillers they put in them.

I've mentioned this a lot on other posts. Might need to help support the Gut Microbiome. And don't use the Vet recommended Purina FortiFlora.

I've mentioned this site which she might help. Has lot of supplements for gut support and other things. Just contact her with your questions.

I agree that photos would be helpful. Victor definitely isn't a bad food so I don't think it's that.

I would take him to the vet for a full blood panel and bring in a stool sample to rule things out.

thank you for all the replies.

He has access to fresh water all day. He is a normal drinker. If that makes sense.

I don’t have time to take him to the vet, so i’m trying to see if i can get any help before making the call. No bloodwork done either.

His poops are loose and big like mud pies. and they reek, and are horrible to cleanup.

Your thread caught my eye because my current Dobe suffers, I suspect, from not absorbing as much as he needs from his food. This has been the case all along for him. It sounds like your case might be more severe. We've never experienced him going off his feed, and he is not picky. He loves food!

My 28" male, fully mature, is 70 lbs., however, the key reason he is so lightweight is he is narrow in the chest. He's full Euro, but working-line, so built for speed and agility. But yeah, we used to be able to see his spine and hip bones.

I tried several quality foods, and some supplements. We were up to 8 cups (if I recall) when he was around one year old. We backed it back down to four cups per day eventually, His stools have always been a problem. His first stool of the day will be acceptably firm, but the following ones get softer and softer. I think stress, and even, more exercise than he's accustomed to seem to contribute to excessive numbers of bowel movements to the point where he may just be producing squirts.

It may surprise some, but the food he has done the best on has been Purina Pro Plan Sport.

So, how are your Dobe's stools? Oh, and is he intact or neutered, and if neutered, at what age?

The lack of exercise capacity is worrisome, and is not the case with my skinny guy. Honestly, I'd be concerned about your dog's health. I don't mean to be cold about it. I hope you get some good results or news!

Pics would help. His weight he doesn't sound skinny, how tall is he?

His symptoms of mud pie poops that are really stinky plus the lack of energy would have me taking sick leave and going to the vet.

You have been dealing with this for a while it seems, so frustrating. Did you ever run a fecal on him or ever have his blood work done?

Our female is almost a year old. We feed Victor also, with occasional sardines, chicken etc. She drinks quite a bit of water and she has 2-3 stools a day, which are formed. She is quite lean. Her coat is shiny. I don’t think being tired after 30 min of hard play is a red flag, but smelly loose stools is. See if you can drop off a stool sample at your vet’s for analysis. That might be a good place to start.

He is 30” tall will be 2 in May.
He is not neutered. It’s not that he has low energy it’s more of his stamina because he is such a heavy, thick dog (I’m hoping). He has great drive i’d say medium and enjoys the flirt pole and fetch with the ball. just after about 40-45 minutes of hard play he gets tired. but he is heavy show line and wasn’t bred for workability, more so for looks. I will attach a photo of him tomorrow. He is eating and drinking regularly, His ribs are slightly covered in fat but you can still see them. My main concern now is his stool and the SHOULDERS! ugh it’s such a headache. I don’t know why they stick out. I give him 4 1/2 cups now because maybe I am over feeding and his stool was definitely more shaped still soft but towards the end it was very soft. I was looking into Bernie’s perfect poop and was reading all the reviews. Is this something good to try?

I mean, same for mine and they're healthy and conditioned. They can run around of their own free will for a long time or go on hikes for several hours but doing something full out like fetch or flirt pole for 45 minutes is a LOT of energy.

I would say you need to find the root cause (either underlying health issue or the food just not agreeing with him) before looking at a 'band aid,' so to speak. I don't think you've said what food you're feeding?

My boy is the same way, he's one year old, 27'7 inches tall and 80lbs, you can clearly see his ribs and his stools are usually really soft...vets still can't find what's the problem. Draco is currently on Acana (fish recipe) it's the only kibble that his stomach accepts. I usually give him pumpkin, it makes his stools firmer, at least for some days. Your boy is really big, some pics would definitely help.

Yes, pictures are worth a bundle here. It's hard enough to help over the internet with pictures, but without photos we are all imagining a different look. 30" is definitely a big boy. I might say he's got just the right amount of rib showing, or I might say you really have a problem. And I'm really curious what the shoulders look like, I'm having a hard time picturing what you are referring to.
