It's a Dobie thing!

Hm, I never had a Dobe come into the bathroom with me, although they would/will lie outside the door. If I may go a little OT: if Dobes are Velcro dogs, a certain "Shepherd-Husky mix" (per the owners relinquishing him to the Humane Society) I adopted was Crazy Glue. Found out from my vet he was a wolf . . . (I don't believe in their being kept as pets, but that's another story.) Anyway, Nicholas would *not* be stopped from getting into the tub when I took a shower; I didn't want to ask my landlord to replace the bathroom door after the first time he broke it from its hinges, so he was a very *clean* wolf! He used to watch for me to come home from work - from the roof. Always sitting; never lay down while waiting, my fascinated neighbors told me, even if I was an hour or so late.

(Sorry for the digression!)

Not a problem. That is fascinating. Did he do much howling? So you're saying he was a full-blooded wolf? Or something close to it?

YES, he was a howler! but he didn't bark. I'd been seeing my vet for 15 years or more when I brought Nicholas in, so I could tell right away from his expression that something was "off." His first, sort of forcibly-cheerful question was "So, they gave you a license for him?!" Apparently rabies shots aren't 100% effective on wolves. He estimated him to be at least 95%, probably 100. He talked about the lie of his fur, pointed out other dog/wolf differences, and took a blood sample - I think; I was too rattled to absorb much! One other very odd thing. One morning he - Nicholas, not my vet ; ) - woke me up a half hour early; only time he ever did. I figured he needed to be let out, but not so; he *wouldn't* go outside. As I was up anyway, I turned on the TV as I always watched the Today Show, which was due to start in 25 minutes. So wait - why were Matt Lauer and Katie Couric on so early? The local NBC affiliate had switched to the live feed - it was 9/11. (Cue theme from Twilight Zone.)

This might, for me, fall under the category of Dobie things I won't/can't allow. Perhaps the number one thing I have worked to achieve thus far in our pup is making him livable in our home situation. Nighttime crazies would just not work in our small house with my working wife in bed getting her sleep.

Sometimes I think it's sad how much I have to stifle this spirited little guy. Then again I give him outlets and channel his energies pretty well I think.

You were asking for a philosophical answer, weren't you? :bag: :D

I didn't know Ares' leg was hurt! I think I don't know how to get all the posts from this forum.

As for nighttime energies: I am a big night owl and one of my things has for years been a late night walk with my Dobe.

In my opinion, one of the best breeds of dog to walk with alone late at night. There's a Dobie thing. :thumbsup2:

Lol yes my silly boy took a good spill on concrete giving him a limp a stiff and bruised hip but he's much better now.
It's not been fun keeping him on bed rest he hadn't liked it much either but till the meds are done he has to take it easy :/

We laps have a pit/rottie mix. That's my other half's favorite night time thing. He basically looks like an oversized pit bull. I'm not sure he could do both at the same time lol he unfortunately never trained Scooby to walk well on a leash and now that we have an electric fence he's not leashed often. Putting 2 big strong dogs on a leash at the same time would be a bit much for anyone haha

My pup doesn't finish every crumb in his mouth before drinking from his water bowl. Then some crumbs end up in his water bowl. Then he won't drink from it because it has crumbs in it.
Dobe thing or just Drogon thing?

If it's not a dobe thing it's a drogon and mischa thing. She does the same... In such a rush after eating that she "tarnished" her water and I need to rinse her bowl and refill. So dramatic about it too

Not sure. I haven't run into that.

Oji doesn't often finish the water in his mouth before moving swiftly away from the water bowl, leaving me to wipe up a major mess each time. I don't know how I'm going to live with maybe 10 more years of this.

Lol that's a drogon thing lol Ares loveeeessss his water he wouldn't care if anything was in it he's going to drink it. I can't fill it up full cuz I'll have a giant puppy making a giant mess and splashing it everywhere !

Mischa does that too. There have been several times where I've heard "Mischa peed on the floor" and I'm like yeah no this time its just water. She's sloppy! She pops her head up just far enough away from the bowl may (to catch all that splashy mess) and slops it the whole way across the room

Maybe if you need him to take a pill he doesn't like you should plop it into his water bowl.

Not so much a Dobie thing, perhaps, as an Any-"Commanding"-Barker thing: I've never needed to be rude in order to bring to an end a boring/annoying phone call with that too-obvious "Oh, excuse me, I need to go; someone's at the door" excuse. I've just shown Ava (et al.) the (silent, of course) "speak" gesture. The ensuing racket has the alarmed caller exclaiming that I obviously have a "problem" and he'll let me go to tend to it!

Nice! Now, if there is a real caller at the door and it's an unwanted one, your dog's barking can solve that one too.

It always does! But the poor UPS guy . . . his knees shake as he runs back to his truck, every time, even at her "friendly" bark. From inside. Some people and Dobermans!

You should see Oji's performance at the front door when the mailman comes onto our porch. I should video tape it, though I don't have a Youtube account, so uploading videos to DCF is not that feasible for me.

We should have a thread of members' Dobes going off at the front door, then have a vote for the most impressive. We could also have a winner for the Dobe most crisply obedient in ceasing upon command.
