It's a Dobie thing!

I was just a little embarrassed, hoping the vet wouldn't think I didn't properly bathe and brush them,
That's what I kept thinking with ours too since they never had a speck otherwise and thought "why now of all times". I think it was a member here who told me about the stress induced flaking - maybe @Sophia's Justice when we met at a show.
I still can't wrap my head around why or how?? I mean, how does a dog suddenly start flaking like that?
That's a good question and I don't know the answer either. Maybe it's like stress induced sweat in humans?

I just read Tad's post and was about to write the exact same thing! I can understand the shedding, but can't wrap my head around the dandruff, although I've tried Googling it since I read the recent posts about it. I don't get how the skin could dry up *and* slough off (and I guess you have to add work its way through their coats to the surface) so quickly. In the case of my two with this issue, they rode in the car all the time, so that wasn't a stress/excitement factor, and they weren't going to their regular vet, but to a new place, so the route wasn't familiar. So it came down to maybe fifteen to twenty minutes tops - car to waiting room to exam room and eek! they have flakes all over them!

TD has this issue! He goes into hyper-shed mode whenever he has to be crated more than normal, and he has the dandruff to go along with it.

Something odd about him, is that he has a double coat so the hairs growing back in currently are his light tan hairs instead of his red.

Oh yeah both Liberty and Justice get it during stressful times for them. Mostly it happens only in public places where they may have to be leashed or actually behave in front of others.

Liberty and Justice - great names!

Do you know what causes this - physically, that is? How it is that stress causes them to develop and slough dander, and so quickly?

I had a thought..( i havent read through all the responses so if im repeating please excuse) this is a total guess abt the dandruff but when the stress hormones kick in (like at the vet) and they shed a small puppy off their body, i wonder if the hair being released causes the attached/surrounding skin cells (that may be dry/dying/dead but still attached) to come with or loosens said cells as part of its ejection... LOL.. sorry im just guessing! !

A weird thing that ive noticed about my girl that ive never noticed from any other dog ive owned or seen boarding is that Miesha will bird and plane watch! She will actually notice things going on in the sky and watch it go by! No barking... just like interest and i swear if she were human it would be admiration in her eyes!

Oh same here. Not so much Della but Albert watches everything that flies over. There was an Air Force jet doing a touch and go here at this airport and wow did that confuse him when the sound was so far behind the jet and so loud. I would swear he was having a convolution if I didn't know he was just looking back and forth so fast trying to find it. LOL

This is sorta how I described the shedding to happen in my OP - though it was described to me a little differently - but the shedding, although this kinda makes sense, still seems odd, in my case(s) as I'm pretty fanatical about my dogs having moisturizing baths a day or two before a vet visit, which is when I've noticed it. Still, I guess the skin doesn't have to be all that dry to loosen?

Just like Secretariat would do!! No whinnying or nickering, he just tracked planes, and sometimes birds, across the sky.

My dogs - uh, no . . .

I'm starting a thread, sorry if there is one, where we can talk about things that our dobies do that most dogs don't. In my first week of beginners Rally class when I asked Gretchen to lay down she brought both paws up in the air and slapped the ground (like she always does, I thought it was just a Gretchen thing). My instructor started laughing and she said "That is such a Doberman thing, they all slap the ground when they lay down!"

Feel free to add your own "It's a dobie thing" to the list!
Jax does the exact same thing. It cracks me up when we are out early in the morning (and it's a little cold), the grass is slightly damp, or if we are on an un-carpeted surface inside. He doesn't like to do "down" in those situations, so he just does the big floor slap and looks at me like, "Isn't it okay that you can see that I know what I'm supposed to do? I just don't like doing it in this particular spot!"
Love that dang kid.

I've noticed that Kobi has started to do the whole 'hold my head' thing! My previous dobes did it too, it's totally cute! If I hold my hand out Palm up he'll rest his chin on it and just chill on my hand. The weight of his head can get quite challenging though lol *major hand ache*

Eating a chew on the kitchen chair or on a surface not the floor lol

Yes, same here! Kobi brings his Kong chew tyre over to the me, rests it on the arm of my leather sofa and has a good chew lol "not on the sofa already!" the only time he chews it on the floor is when I'm down there with him. Got the whole "numb bum" thing going on, haha!

We all know about being hyper and pacing and being underfoot as you try to get yourself and your Doberman ready for a walk or outing; How about after coming back from a walk you get inside the door, take off the leash and go about the business of taking your shoes off and getting things squared away, and your Doberman stands still as a statue right there near you (too near) as you deal with all your gear.

It's like: Go on! Go about your business, dude! I just devoted the better part of an hour exercising you. Leave me be for a minute while I unbundle from my winter gear!

I guess I should be thankful he's not pacing after the walk, but it's weird how he just stands there. It's like his urges have been satisfied and he's sort of in dormant mode for a few minutes. I don't know. Maybe like men after sex.

I don't know if this is the right/best place to post this, but trust that a moderator will move it if necessary.

The fog comes on little . . . Doberman feet??

"Some breeds have what are called “cat feet.” These have a short third digital bone, resulting in a compact feline-like foot; this design uses less energy to lift and increases the dog’s endurance. You can tell by the dog's paw print: cat feet prints are round and compact. Akita, Doberman pinscher, giant schnauzer, kuvasz, Newfoundland, Airedale terrier, bull terrier, keeshond, Finnish spitz, and old English sheepdog all have cat feet. (But don’t tell them that.)"

Dobes should have compact, cat-like paws, yep. Our current young male, Oji, is pretty good in that department, and with him at least, it makes quite a difference the attitude he currently has – whether his paws are nice and cat-like, or longer (but not at all to the extent of hare-like). When he alerts on something, he stands up nice and tall, not only extending his long neck skyward, but to a certain extent standing on his tippy-toes which makes the paws considerably more cat-like.

Actually, the next part of the article was about hare-feet, those with longer middle toes. And I thought that Timber, my Samoyed, just had "weird" paws!

Yes, I know well the "tip-toed" stance.

Yup, Buddy's a blanket sucker too. :D I never had a dog that did that before. Not even the first two Dobermans.

OMG, you nailed it! :spit: I've had that happen more than once! One almost made me nose dive! But 'tailgating' is a perfect term! :yatta:

Whining,...:whoop:yes, the whining.

Buddy goes through spurts of licking. I can only assume it's weather/seasonal related. BUT he does stop on command. "NO LICKING !" is our go to command and he's learned I mean business when I say that. :tap:
My Red dobie used to lick and my keyword was clicking said very fast, a shortened version of quit licking. It worked every time. My Isabella was a groaner and an animated sigher. She was also that high pitched whiner that could set your teeth on edge. Got to where I would stare at her when she whined, she would stop as long as I was staring at her, then start it up again when I turned my head. It was all a game to her. Dobermans are total clowns and very expressive. Lol

OH!!!! Katie does this too!!! I have never seen a dog look at the sky before we got her. We live in a flight path, and when a plane is coming in from the direction over our house, she always looks for it!! How smart is that??? To me, curiosity = smart Thats what makes our dogs so special,,,they are truly curious!
