Guess who got skunked

Poor Rube's.....she looks adorable all lathered up  It's a horrible thing....Clarke got it a few weeks ago....the two of them charged out the door at 6am and were barking at the corner of the yard....I could see 'something' black on the other side of the chain link, so called them to me. Glory, by some miracle, came running to me; and Clarke, my reliable boy, stayed a minute too long barking at the intruder, who I at once recognized as a skunk because it did not leave - just turned it's back and sprayed. Thankfully, it only got his muzzle and it wasn't too bad. Had to keep him outside till I had my supplies and washed his head. A friend gave me this: SKUNK OFF

after a few days because the smell was not leaving....this stuff actually worked after one time. Frustrating situation for certain. I completely understand that panic when you see it attack your dobe! I would have rushed off to the vet also in that case!

OMG - Poor Rubie and the whole family and car! That's terrible it was fighting back like that - I always think rabies when I think of skunks, but this one had a legit reason to be fighting and it was at night, and I'm sure you have your vaccines UTD, so no worries. But still, getting bit on top of getting sprayed? My heart is with you.

How is she today? Seriously, get any of the products linked above, the targeted products work so much faster than the baking soda concoction.

Aww poor Rubie! If that skunk was going after her it's a sign they're rabid since they usually only use the spray as a defense so I'd definitely have that checked.

You guys are THE BEST! it's been such an up and down 24 hours :sob:

I took Rubie to our regular vet and she looked her over and heard the story, etc., and was like, "I can give you antibiotics if you want."

Um, yes, please, I want.

To be fair, the skunk only went after Rubie after she literally thrashed it. And it was on the smaller side so I'm sure it was young and not used to confrontation? When it sprayed, she did not relent so it had to resort to teeth.

@Kaiser2016 and @Two Dobes I will go look Skouts Honor and Skunk Off up right now! We have all sorts of stuff coming but I'm taking no chances. I have to travel for work in a few days and dog dad has a donut shop to run. Literally loads of laundry and windows wide open and lots of deodorizing spray.

Lol the carnage remaining almost a week later is just ick. Mind you, it rained all day Monday.

NE side of the shed: skunk spay and/or blood

We're mostly skunk free. All the sprays, deodorizers, shampoos, and airing out certainly helps. My car is still a bit questionable.

I'm just seeing your skunk encounter @LifeofRubie !!! What a story! Rubie is a rebel! Lol Really going after that thing! But at a cost, unfortunately. How's she doing now? And your poor car! Holy smokes! Not an easy thing to clean that out! 😕

Waking up this old thread, I thought you had given a thumbs up to the brand you thought worked the best, but I don't see a follow up about it.

Reckless didn't get skunked but there was a dead one on her hike today and she rolled on it! It was like months dead, not fresh at all and still reeking. Evidently nothing wants to eat a dead skunk. Anyway, there is *that smell* on just one edge of her shoulder. I wasn't there, but J got her up and off the ground before she got close. I can only smell it when I put my nose right up to her, it's not like she's wafting the scent around the house.
Going to see what's available in this small town tomorrow and was wondering if you recall what product did the best on poor Rubie last year?

For Rubie herself, the magical mixture of baking soda, dawn, and hydrogen peroxide did work for 98% of the smell. I made a paste, smeared it all over her, and let it sit on her for maybe like 10 minutes (the internet will mention it might bleach your dogs coat a bit) before rinsing off.

We did that night of (because it was the only option available) and I think one more time the day after. For some reason, though, their faces will just have that lingering smell for months! It appears I got a giant bottle of De-Skunk in the guess bathroom in preparation for next time  but can't speak to its effectiveness, yet.

Hopefully that Skunk Off works!

For my car, it looks like I used 80% of a bottle of Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover

I used the same hydrogen peroxide, Dawn liquid soap, and baking soda on Buddy when he got skunked years ago. Since I was afraid to do too much around his eyes, his face also stunk for a long time afterwards. Even though I tried hand washing it with the same solution. I guess some of it will always linger but eventually wear off. But every time I went to hold his face for a smooch I was like, sorry 🥺🤢🤮

TecNu says it works, on the back of bottle, and website. Never tried it, so YMMV.

I keep a bottle handy if I find me and and dog have been clueslessly wandering in the poison ivy, sumac, or oak.
