Is sort of a big catch all topic, feel free to add thoughts ideas, links.

My association of the term is for "bred to function (inc with good health" as in "total doberman" that can do it all - healthy structural conformation built to task needs in person and home guardian, family companion, sports etc.

This is a very interesting podcast that brings in very Smart experts in all that goes along with that in all breeds, with a couple items of great interest in dobes.

Lol, I know, right?
I shared this to give another example of the issue you have discussed- your research into the best dog for your needs, and frustration as you learned of some parts of the US dobe breed ecosystem are closed minded or even in denial of issues.

But to take heart as the same or similar topics are discussed elsewhere.

But to your query/concern: yeah, I'm very picky about what I give my scarce time to and podcasts are frustrating for me as
first: my hearing sux, especially with thick accents like this guest:

2. i read much faster than listen so to save time, what I'll do is read the intro, see if there is anything of use-like research in buying habits,
And try to skip forward,
Or find that podcast on another platform like Spotify that has a crude transcript capability, or youtube where you can download transcripts.

I see the Functional Dog Podcast changed to Podbean (with no transcript) but old interviews can be found on Spotify.


3. Take note of the guest and search for written info on the topic, research, new viewpoints that might be helpful.

There looks to be some really good podcasts on that site. I did see down the row that one had transcripts, perhaps they all do eventually, I don't know. Listening for an hour while doing mindless chores is easy for some but it's one thing my brain has trouble with, so I'm much happier reading. Thanks for the links though. If you could find a link for me to add more hours to my day and energy to use those hours wisely, that'd be icing on the cake.

Ya, I listened to part of it, and note I have the same challenge: not enough hours in the day to do all the chores and nerd out.

So I tend to save these for long trail hikes with BYB Bonnie...

Btw I'm not interested in little spitzy type dogs, just yet. But its yet another example of passionate dog people trying to develop a breed/type to a purpose like old Mr Dobermann in Apolda...

I hope I have one more big dobe in me, next...so I hope the bigs in DPCA remember its a process, not a static moment frozen in time...

The thing I find interesting about functional breeding discussions like this is the idea of developing lines to priorities to do something useful AND also improve health, like the gist of your philosophy and discussions with ethical breeders, a wide ranging discussion I see in other breeds, and one that comes up repeatedly in time as one can find searching archives here and elsewhere.

More background on interviewee needed but the reference to her 1000's of screenings for temperament on Service Dogs also has me curious if that was at a corporate program, like Guide Dogs, Canine Companions, Dogs Inc where tools like BetterBred or VGLs pairing tests on hundreds of dogs are starting to document how breeding for temperament can be proven with genetic data as well as proofing in real life performance, just like in working trials, shows.

The dog science is advancing rapidly, and one of the good opportunities of AI might be to help quantify what works, some more on the behavioral side which is real, proven by analog human beings for 1000's of years but resists digital science analysis...of whats cooked in by breeding, in the genes.
