Finally Posting.

Ok this is a week after the crop. Louies ears were healing very nicely but they were curving inward and backward. So here is the posting pic. Should I tape them in the middle? The flash on my phone made his eyes look weird...even more like an alien dog. lol.

It looks like too much tape to me - with that much tape they can't breath, and may get sweaty and gooey during the healing process. I don't ususally post until the edges are totally healed and that is again usually 10 days to 2 weeks.

Have you checked out the threads in the Doberman Puppy secton on how to post the ears - it will show you that you really only need 2 or 3 pieces of tape.

Great Tape job, but personally I would not leave them like this - less tape is better.

here are the links to both the posting threads

maybe the eyes is just a new breed of doberman...uh oh....did I go there!!! **covers mouth with hand**

His ear position looks great! Like Gail suggests, I use a lot less tape.

Im hoping to be able to take brown bandaging off in a couple days the vet told me to lay the Neosporin on it and cover it up for a few days then leave it off and post and go from there. I am so thankful for everyone's opinions and suggestions. He is my first doberman and I dont mean to make it seem like he is trial and error but he kinda is. I am really learning with him. Thanks everyone!

Dobiegirl if those edges were not healed when you posted - I am strongly urging you to leave them posted, for longer than 48 hours - they can go bad very quickly.

You mean "not to" don't you Gail?

I agree the position looks great and I only used the center tape for a few postings, then left them the way you have them now. Aside from too much tape, you're doing great so far, and of course that's what we're here for - to ask questions as you go. :)

yes I mean NOT TO leave them up more than 48 hours without checking on them, once the edges are totally healed then you can post and leave up for 5-7 days at a time

How old is this puppy? I ask because he does look older to me so we might not have the option of leaving them unposted til healed. There is a very short window on an older f you keep them clean and post with much less tape as suggested then he should be fine. I am not sure I would leave them down depending on age.

The vet told me today that we dont have the option of leaving them unposted until healed. He was right at 12.5 weeks when I finally found someone that would do the cropping that we didnt have to drive 6-8 hours to get to. Im going to take the posts out tonight for and hour or two so that they can air out and I can apply more neosporin. Then wrap them back up. He has finally gotten used to the posts and doesnt shake his head around anymore. He does look like a deer though lol. We were outside last night letting him run around and I told my fiance that we had to get him back in the house before one of our hunting neighbors shot him. (I know that sounds bad but hunting is VERY big here.)

How long should I leave them down before reposting? If the edges wernt healed? You guys are being more helpful than the vet. As far as I cant tell it is a MAJOR thing right now to keep them posted so they will stand because they were turning in (not good). Im going to sake them down this evening but I am worried about how long to leave them down. Im afraid to leave them down too long because of him being so old now.

Personally, and remember I've only posted one dog, I would leave them down for just a couple hours. That's long enough to let the ear cleanser dry and the wounds get some air without letting them be down too long. While they're down do your best to keep him interested in things so he works on keeping them up himself.

If you have to keep them posted then I am going to suggest that when you put them back up you either use the large non sick bandage pads to lay accross the cut edge so that the tape does not touch the cut edge -

II have included a link to instructions on how to do the styrofoam cup method. Taping the ears up on the cup has the ears standing, but leaves the edges open to aid in healing http://www.oocities.org/heartland/ranch/6160/eartap.html

Alright yall. I cant believe I didnt notice sooner. That dumb ass vet cut the bell of one of his ears way too far back....He is my baby therfore I think he is the most beautiful puppy in the whole world but
I dont care. Im furious. I couldnt see before because his ears were taped...help me out here.

Can you post pics so we see what you mean? If he cut the ears differently the only real options you have are 1) take him back and request he make it right or 2) live with it. My experience is most other vets won't want to touch a crop done by someone else for ethical reasons.

Hmm, I went back and looked at the pics you posted when they were still taped over his head and from that angle it didn't look like too much bell was gone, but maybe it was on the side you can't see...

Yes, if you can post some new pics from now we could take a better look. At any rate, don't panic since sometimes they look much better after a nice posting job, even if they do seem a little off right now.
