Ear posting question?? Your personal tell tale sign of a repost needed/incorrect seating?

For those who have posted, and have a bit experience, what is your tell tale sign that your posts need to be redone/are seated incorrectly?

For context, this is the 3rd time posting my puppies ears. The first and second time we posted, they didn’t really seem to bother him too much but I was having issues with the bottom of one of the post popping out. So this time, I seated them deeper into the bell in hopes they wont pop out. However, after posting them this morning, he is shaking his head A LOT more than the other 2 times. The only difference being they are seated deeper into his ear.

So I guess my question would be, would you personally take them out and re-do them? Or give it more time and see if he adjusts?? I just don’t want to cause more harm than good with potential rubbing from his constant shaking.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!!

I would leave them in to see if he adjusts, which they usually do.
Thanks for the response! That’s kind of what I figured I’m just a little paranoid about hurting him and causing sores.

He seems to be fine with them when he’s distracted with a toy or a treat. It’s only when he running around or has nothing to do that he shakes and fusses with them.

So if you back tape all the way down the rod and also push the backer rods down until they bottom out, then the backer rod should be securely in place. There should be no question of proper position or alignment.

Then the only other reason I would have for my pup to shake his head and scratch would be that he is just annoyed with having something g stuck in his ears- in which I can fully understand. To counter act this, engage in play, walk, tug, mental games, etc to distract and gradually he will get use to it.

Good luck.

In addition to the excellent advice just given, two reasons for irritation and shaking: If the posts are not seated deeply and back taped to prevent movement then the wiggling that goes on in the ear canal can draw attention to the pup because the noise of it in the ear and also, the wiggling/movement can rub the skin making it raw and painful. Make sure you go deep in the canal, it's L shaped so you cannot hit anything sensitive. If your post is too fat it won't go down deep enough and pop out and/or wiggle.

Lastly, in the early stages you will learn, the pup will learn and no matter about a few set backs, it almost alway turns out OK. ;)

I agree, I’m sure he is just annoyed as this is only his 3rd posting and I did push them down even further than I had been previously (clearly I didn’t have them in far enough). He is still shaking his head a bit but doesn’t do it when he is distracted and entertained.

Thank you!
