Doberman Seperation Anxiety?

EEE MOLLY

Novitiate
Hello everyone. My female doberman, Molly, is only two years old and as of late, she has been whining nonstop in an attempt to get inside. She has a perfectly good dog house outside which she usually sleeps in. However, recently she's been whining and even scratching at the door and windows to get inside [NONSTOP]. I walk her once a day. Multiple times if I can, yet she still does this. I don't think exercise is the problem here. What should I do to make her stop?

Dobies are very much pack dogs. They want to be with their people are should NOT be outside dogs. Also, if you're only walking her 1 time per day, is that the only interaction she has? Only seeing and interacting with her people once a day is no where near enough.

I agree bring her inside but if you are set on keeping her outside, find out what has changed outside. Is there some animal or something new that is making her anxious or fearful? When she is whining and scratching what happens if you go outside? Does she settle down or does she still act up? Is she in heat? Have you checked her dog house for anything unusual?

The Dobermans I've had hated being alone. They usually pick one person they really like and follow that person wherever they go.

If you look at the intention of the breed (as a protector) this behavior completely makes sense.

My last Dobe was a on-man-dog to the point of being a problem. But one things is clear: Dobermans must have adequate interaction with their people!

I suppose if they were let to run wild with a pack of dogs it might satisfy their needs as well. Or not. What do you think? Do Dobermans need people?

I agree, Doberman's are not outside dogs and they're bred to be with their people. If they are left outside it can cause many problems because they are so miserable and need to interact with the family.

Is there a reason you keep her outside?

Welcome, BTW. :)

I agree. Most of us can't even go to the bathroom with out our dobes. I've put mischa on a lead out back so I can mulch (literally 2 feet out of her reach) and she will freak out. They definitely need their people. Maybe I shouldn't let her in my lap, but the following picture is when I planted my flowers. She WAS on the lead and wouldn't have it.

Well, it looks like 'molly' hasn't been back. I hope she got the messages that everyone here agrees on....Dobermans are Velcro and prefer being with their humans! I mean, really? The dog scratches at the door and whines non stop and you wonder what he wants? Interaction! Hell, most dogs want interaction! But Dobermans thrive on it! I just don't get getting a dog and then just leaving it outside. I suppose its supposed to be a deterrent to intruders, :whoop:

I've never understood outside dogs. Nothing against those who do it, but I've seen too many where they forget to give it water on a hot day or the dog gets super aggressive because of lack of interaction to the point the owners can't even get near it. What's the point to tie a dog up outside and forget about it?
