Backyard Chickens?

They enjoy having them around and are fine with having less egg production.

IF I ever got some, this would be fine for me. Just keep the around for our enjoyment, bug eaters and whatever eggs they lay. I mean, how many eggs can I eat?? LOL

Funny story - my husband took care of things for me recently while I was busy at the dog show. He went to the chicken coop to gather eggs and feed the chickens - when he bent over to get the eggs MY PRECIOUS rooster attacked him. He told me to get my own darn eggs from now on. OH how I love that rooster. ROFLOL

Soooo I purchased some farm eggs today from a local farmer right down the road from me.... I am ashamed to say that I have never actually eaten an egg that was fresh like this.... for 3$ a dozen, its so worth it. Question: how long do these usually last compared to store-bought? CANT WAIT TO TRY ONE TOMORROW FOR BFAST!

Oh yes, we buy them from a local farmer fresh out of the nest and used to have our own and it just goes to show how long the stores keep them or how long it is before they get to the store. A good example is trying to peel a boiled farm fresh egg vs a store bought egg. The fresher they are, the harder they are to peel and the store ones are always so easy.

Yes, the only drawback with fresh eggs is trying to peel them. Lol

Fresh eggs are hard to peel because they are very hard to protect them. The best time to hard boil an egg is when it is 7-10 days old. The egg becomes more porous and allows air in and carbon dioxide out. The white also shrinks a bit as the egg ages.

Soooo... the new house has an old pig pen which I think would be great to house some chickens (3 or 4 would be fine) and I need some advice...... on everything.

Anyone wanna educate me? Or know much about having chickens? You would be my savior!

MichelleM is right on! Just pick the breed of chicken for your climate and pick the one you like. The rest of it is fun and profitable to you and your family.

I love my chickens! I've had some funky breeds over the years. Frizzle chickens were like silkies having a bad hair day, have had polish chickens, and dozens of different breeds, so much fun

LOL or just cracking them! I cracked one of the blue ones yesterday for fried eggs & the shell was much tougher than store bought.
