Is this breed bravery and loyalty like it used too?

I don't know where the dogs come from....unfortunatley, dogs 'at large' is common around where I live. We have a leash law in TN, but nobody adheres to it  I have called animal control before, and their answer is that I have the right to shoot any dog on my property...which is something I would never do. I am thinking of getting a 'starter gun' just to have the noise, but no bullet....I also always carry a loud pocket air horn; but clearly did not even reach for it when confronted by this crew. If I were alone without a dog, I am sure I would have remembered it in my pocket, but I was SO concerned with Glory getting mauled that I just screamed bloody murder, and we ran.

Whoa! :spit: I just had a little incident happen here at home. My husband's been home all day, out with Annie shoveling and keeping up with some of the snow. He was wearing one of his starter jackets and puts up the hood once in awhile.

But he came in and was going to go out on the ATV with the plow and for some reason he changed to a black Blackhawk baseball hat. He doesn't wear them that often. Especially in the winter.

I was just starting to fix the dogs supper, with Annie at my side, when Annie turned around and looked at him and flew over to him, hackles raised and barking! I'm like, what the hell? I said, she doesn't recognize you! LOL that was so funny! I mean she went sliding into him on the tile floor barking and looking up at him in a crouched position. He started talking to her and she still wasn't sure. She knew I had supper also so she ran back to me for 2 seconds and then ran back to him again doing the same thing.

He finally took the hat off and started talking to her but holy cow that was the first time that's ever happened! It was pretty funny actually. I mean that is one thing that she will do sometimes is bark when she hears us coming back into the room when we've been gone for a little while. Or like I could be in the Next Room coming in and talking to myself and she'll give off a little bark like, who's here? I never correct it. I think it's good. Shows that she's alert to movement and sound. That's what I would want. 😇

My two Bogie and Bacall (Bogie passed in 2020) always did teamwork. If a threat was perceived by them, Bacall always ran to meet it and Bogie would assume his protective stance between my legs ready to go if things got serious.

About 7 yrs ago they both went full on protection mode to protect me. I had them in my Jeep SUV which had dark tinted windows. I had the car running with AC on and an ice chest AC in the back while I went to the fishing boat docks to get Key West Pinks shrimp off the boat.
While I was walking back I used my fob to unlock the car and these two guys tried to steal my jeep when I unlocked it. One ran up behind me and grabbed my back pack of shrimp and pulled me down, the other guy jumped in the drivers seat and was face to face with my two Dobermans.
Both my Dobermans went full on defcon 5 on this guy. The other guy started to hit my two and get them off his partner.
I saw red at that point and grabbed my knife out of my pocket and started attacking the guys arm with it.
They managed to get away but not before my two jumped out and chased them down.
Thankfully when I called Out and Come, they came back to me.
They did a number on the one guy’s neck in the back part where the nerve bundles are located, that originally jumped into the drivers seat.
He was a bloody mess and so was my Jeep. I called 911 and got both the Sheriff’s Deputies and ambulance there.
They were career criminals so after being released from the hospital they went to jail. A couple months later they sued me for having vicious dogs because one guy lost the use of his right arm from nerve damage.
Thank goodness I won that court case.
So never be surprised if your Doberman perceives a threat and reacts immediately to protect you.

Environmental training starting at a very young age is crucial to confidence building in your Doberman. Confidence is key as well as consistency in training.

My male Legend is extremely protective of me. Every step I take he is glued to my side.
He does not want to allow any males (except my hubs) and some females around me at all.
He reads the situation and reacts accordingly.
I always take either Legend or Bacall with me when I go to the ATM here where we live due to so many people hanging out wanting to beg for your money. They keep those people away from me.

Sorry for the long diatribe.

Love this! And so glad that you had your boys with you! We are actively in training for protection (mostly to hone in their skills and commands. We still take both boys out to socialize and keep them "people safe" but I am very very cautious of their body language and QUICKLY move to protect them or other if they show signs of protection. When I gas up my truck all 4 windows are rolled down so that in the event someone wants to get a wild hair -- I know my boys will move to protect me! (if not the freedom seed launcher is always with in reach)

My trainers have told me that mine are a rarity these days... they don't see many Dobies that have the "natural fearlessness" that they were once so well known for.
