Anyone use the SportDog Yardtrainer 100s??

This one looks like its rechargeable and just like the one I have, only smaller.
I don't think the Mini was a thing when you bought yours. The IQ was "the" small dog collar at the time. Its nice they finally are making ecollars for little ones too!

For the two ecollar thing, most likely you would pair the new Mini ecollar remote with the IQ Plus ecollar unit. You'd pair them by using where you touch the two to turn them on. You would use one ecollar remote. Looks like the Mini remote has a switch for designating which collar you are using. Others do it a little differently. My Pro Educator (PE-900) for example has 4 buttons. Its able to be used as a 2 dog remote or one dog. With 2 dogs, each collar has access to two buttons (I like to program them to vibrate for recall and Nick for correction but I could program each button something different depending on the dogs) If I wanted to use it for one collar, I'd have access to 4 different buttons programmed to a different thing.

I agree the less levels there are the less fine tuning you can do to find your dogs working level. I'm personally not a fan of collars like that. When I can't even feel our ecollar until ~20 but my dog can feel it at 10. You can really fine tune it to each dog's sensitivity.

I used to have a Dogtra. About size - ecollars in general have really become a lot smaller than they used to be. The 1900 Dogtra collar I had was way bigger than the ones they make now, even bigger than the educators. They've slimmed all their old models (including the 1900) down now.

When I was ready to purchase another ecollar, I wanted to have a two dog system, and one that was very programmable for both my hard dog and my softer dog. I needed access to less harsh features, and the educator had that with adjustable vibration and tones. Also one that would let me use entirely different features for different collars at the same time. Last but not least, I favor a stick remote over the stopwatch style. So the Pro Educator it was and its been a great ecollar for my needs. It also goes up to 3 dogs which was a possibility for the future when purchasing. A doberman may be in the near future ;)

We have a Sportdog long range sitting here but it's been used very little and never worked right. I bought it a long time ago so maybe they've changed or I had a faulty one too.

We are using the Dogtra IQ's on our dogs now and they work very well.

I’m sending the Sport Dog back and I ordered the ET-300 MINI EDUCATOR.

I’ve owned dogs most of my life, and Max is my third Doberman. None were as hard headed as he is.

I was one of those that said I would never use a shock collar; they are inhumane. But recently I watched videos of dog trainers using these collars and letting the owners hold them to experience the shock. None of them could have held this in their hand and not reacted. I put it back in the box as soon as I tried it and said “No way”. But as I said maybe this unit was defective, or because it was the “Stubborn” model maybe the norm is to deliver a brutal shock. If the Mini Educator does that; I’ll put it back in the box and send it back and won’t drink the Kool aid of “training collars” anymore.

I think the vibrate will probably be enough, but if I need to shock him I don’t want to have to taze him.

Yes, absolutely I’m second guessing it. I would think any responsible owner would. That’s why I tried it on me (As a Trainer from Nashville showed in his videos) before throwing it on Max and lighting him up. I don’t know why that would mean I shouldn’t use one if I find its working properly.

All e dollars deliver a shock that most will find uncomfortable or painful. Based off your “views” you’ll end up sending the mini educator back as well.

Actually, the first cheap e collar I bought was like you are saying. It lacked range, but the biggest grievance was that sometimes it seemed to give an almighty whack when the setting should have meant a lesser stim. And I held it and went up through the levels and could tolerate it to halfway, with the shock feeling like an electric fence.

The Dogtra e collar has a different feeling stim. On the lower levels it is more of a zing than a thump and when you get up higher it becomes a nasty sensation, but its not like being belted! I think I have heard that there are two kinds of electric stim that can be used? I would never use that cheaper version again!

Most if the newer ecollars are muscle stimulation collars. They don’t actually shock the dog.

an electrical stimulation is still used. That’s what’s creating the stimulation in the muscle. Voltage is applied, however a very very small amount of amperage is applied. It’s the same principle as a taser or stun gun.

Sensation is still much diffferent than the old shock collars

the old “shock” collars are ancient and I don’t think any manufacture makes them anymore.

however these “stimulation” collars still use the same principle. Hence why their stilled called “electrical stimulation collars”. A voltage is applied to stimulate the muscle to create a pain effect. These collars are much like a TENs unit, but more powerful. On a decent enough setting the stimulation is still going to create a “shocking” sensation. You’re description of “muscle stimulating” is misleading as it’s still a form of electrical stimulation.

Which the OP already said he isn’t comfortable with.

You will do just fine with the 300 Mini Educator.

0-100 Stim: both instant and continuous on one side and vibrator on other side.

I keep mine between 25-30 and only jack it up for emergencies.

When he learns what the stim/vibrate is actually for....it will be much easier.

Mini educator should work good for him then

Like I said... I (and my husband) could not feel the educator at all until closer to 20. Java slightly turned her head at 10 (this was while calm and standing) with a reaction like "What was that?" letting me know she felt it. When she's running around but is still paying attention to me, shes between 20-25. Prey drive or being a nut drive, much higher. At 20 it did not hurt me at all.

My softer dog noticed the stim only a few levels lower, at 7.

Being my dogs are much older and have been ecollar trained for 10 years, almost all days I never have to touch the stim anymore. Vibration for recall for windy days for Paige and for Java who is partially deaf.

I think you will be very happy with the mini educator and its very gradual change in levels.

Humph! Well........I just might have to get this for Kali. Even though I just bought a new IQ Plus.

How to use tone and stim.

Tone = click from a distance = good job!

Stim low/mid = alpha nip

Stim highest = "HERE! NOW!"

If you ever have a playful friendly 90 pound beastly looking dog who still has his balls and who sees people as friends, youll need to be able to REALLY get him to stop and come back.

Cops shoot too many "aggressive looking" dogs. If a labrador walked up wagging his tail on a police call, then he might have a chance... but I do not feel like someones gonna take a chance on a doberman. Id rather "hurt" my dog than lose my dog.

I don't know where I saw it now, but I swear I found an ecollar for tiny dogs awhile back, but it was not rechargeable! And reviews were not great on how long the batteries lasted, so I passed. And now I find this mini. :groan:

I use the Garmin Sport Pro. (Tritronics)
It has 3/4mi range. I use the tone as recall, vibrate for attention on me and stim for corrections.
Bacall only takes the lowest setting. Bogie is a higher setting, he can be bull headed and has a higher prey drive. I’ve only used the highest setting a couple times and that was for chasing a deer and second was for a stand off with a rattler, they were about 10’ apart but enough to get me freaked out.

Bumping an old thread..getting ready to replace Bam's e collar

hrm, our educator mini on the lowest level is barely registered when I tested it on myself so sounds like something is off with your unit. I'm not familiar with the SportDog brand but I'm sure someone here is.

To get a starting level, you're on the right track. I had it turned all the way down while the collar was on my dog and pressed the stim button. When she didn't react, I turned it up one and tested again. Repeat until you can see them register the sensation which was about 10 or so (on a scale of 1-100). She didn't jump but she put her head up. That's where I started but her general setting is now 40 when she's off leash. Enough to grab her attention when she's "seeing red" but definitely not enough to cause her any pain. Again, I have tested the 40 on myself and while it doesn't hurt, it's not pleasant.

I was looking at this brand on Amazon and thought if I used the search function here..I might be able to talk to someone who has one...and TAHHDAAHHH!:)

How well do the collar and remote hold a charge?

I am replacing Bam's e collar for a few reason.....main reasons is it wouldn't hold a charge. Seemed like every 24 hours I having to charge it and it took a full charge to get it back up and on. (WOW that reads like I had my finger on the zap button all the time...yikes.)

I would being trying to get Bam's attention..... thinking he was blowing me off...get the collar off, check it....and it was dead. I don't recall what the brand...I bought it at a pet store a couple of years ago, by the time we started having issues with it, was way past return date.

I'm not going to be using it for a couple more weeks so suggestion on brands to investigate for the wild child....would be very much appreciated.

I'm gonna re-read this thread and dig some more...if there's suggestions for threads to read, links appreciated.

I recommend e collar technologies or garmin over sport dog. I had a sport dog and ended up replacing it a few months later.
