Was advised by vet that the dissolving stitches can cause itching irritation
My dog had dissolving stitches internally and staples on the outside. She never licked or chewed anything, the staples were removed and all was well, then when the internal stitches began to dissolve it there was swelling and redness, the vet said sometimes the body "rejects" the absorption of the internal stitches. In other words, while the stitches are new and whole, the body doesn't mind, but when they dissolve and the body has to absorb the microscopic pieces it got red & inflamed. She never licked or chewed or outwardly acted bothered by it.

RB, thanks for added insight.

Lola (ex. Olive) was spayed on 9/29/23 at HADR vet. When we adopted her (foster first) on 10/8/23, her incision was perfectly healing. But, on 10/17 it looked like this, as she had started chewing it!

After vet visit, some meds & Suticle donning (plus a spare clean Suticle) it looked great 11/2, one month after surgery:
