American VS European Doberman

Look lets put it this way .... I've been around the block a fair amount - and I know the ins and outs of whats going on in Europe. I imported BOTH my dogs myself. I had long dialogs with the breeders I supported, and before I slapped our hard earned $'s on their kennel counters, these people had let me have copies of ALL the health test reports they'd had done. If a breeder wasn't able to supply me with my requests or wouldn't I just let the litter go, no matter how interested I was in the litter. Clean bill of health followed by full and proper titling was of utmost importance to me. On top of that we did a 13 generation bloodlines analysis on these dogs pedigrees which enabled us to get the lowest COI's and DCM/Cancer death incidences of all the litters available at the times I was shopping. As to cropping and docking ..... That is of NO consequence to me - my last dog arrived here at age 4 months all natural, and the very next week he was taken to a vet and the tail and dews were amputated and the ears cut ...... I honestly believe FCI banning c/d would be stupid because all its done sofar is stop breeders having litters cause a lot less people want the dogs in the all natural state - but you are welcome to your view this is mine.

Hello CathyNu! It's really a blessing to have people around who have the knowledge and the passion about this breed. I would also want to import a quality Doberman into Vancouver, bc, Canada. I would also like a dog with good temperament and looks and health (good in all aspects)... Are there any kennels with specific dogs/litters that you would recommend that you would import if you were to buy one yourself? Thanks. (Didn't know how to PM you so posting here)

Sorry I haven't been around In a while. I would go to Dobermann Review and see what's out there, and look at breeders such as Diamanté Nero out of Italy, Ramonburg out of Belgium, Dura Lex Polonia and Tira Vento an ZPadoku out of Poland .... Also look at Sant Kreal out of Russia. BUT ONCE AGAIN be sure to ask for proof of all health testing and titling ....... Also be sure to look at the pedigrees you are getting.

Thank you @Dobie Wan Knobie, that is very nice of you!
And thank you @CathyNu Is there a way of getting touch with you if I have questions in the future? Facebook or any other way that is more convenient for you?
Yes, you can contact me via Facebook, via Van Nieuwoudthuis European Dobermanns, just send me a pm

Thanks again Dobie Wan for making me aware of this post. Be are in the throws of dog shows at the moment, so my online time has been severely cut

Against my better judgement I'm going to ask a question: Can anyone tell me if one of those large, thick, blocky Euro Dobes like, say, this studly guy: Males » Dura Lex Polonia Gaudi › Main | Dobermann Review
are by any chance less energetic, and don't need as much exercise?

Yes, I have read the sentiments that Euros have more drive and even saw someone suggest more energy. I'm not trying to get into Euro vs. Working, but I know about the drive and energy of a Working Dobe.

The thought just struck me though that such a large, heavy Dobe might be at least a little bit more lethargic. Yes? No?

I've been, for years, considering a breed that is less active and demanding of exercise, and is nice and massive and powerful looking. Most breeds that I like are eliminated from consideration due to their drooling. It would be great if one of those stocky, blocky Euro Dobes could be a nice compromise for me.

Depends on the owners ability to keep the dog conditioned. IMO, The Europeans big or small are by far more driven and energetic then American Dobermans in general. Just like an NFL linebacker they are in shape athletes and could run circles around any of us at likely half their size and weight. You ever see some of those big giant centers move? Then you get an idea what I'm talking about.

I'm pretty partial to anything Obi sires. Although I did notice with this particular Doberman his show career is much more illustrious than his working career.

Well in that case I'm in awe. If a Dobe like that has the look of a beast and can perform like an athletic beast, then hoo boy.

One thing I did observe some time back though, was a video that was shared by someone accomplished in working Dobermans – the type I talk about that are somewhat smaller and not very physically imposing, yet generally tear it up vigorously and crisply on the field. This person posted the video and commented something like "and now for some Russian show dogs." None of the Dobermanns shown were impressive as they were sent after the helper. Just kind of slow, and their bites on the sleeve were lackluster. I realize that is just one video, but it was telling.

I think the difference is when a little dog has to run across the field and hit on a sleeve for sport and is totally different than a heavier stockier bigger boned dog hitting on your arm for real. In reality how fast does a Doberman have to be in real life? Even the biggest fattest of dogs can chase down a human without much effort. Tenacity doesn't come in any specific size. Frankly I've never seen a bite and hold police dog that was mediumsized or considered compact all their GSD's are quite large.

Good point and good perspective.

I'd a whole lot rather have a 70 lb. Dobe latched onto my arm than a 95 lb. one. We do, however, have to consider bite. Full-mouth bite and bite pressure, and tenacity in holding the bite and keeping up the fight in the face of a resisting assailant.

That was my thought exactly. Even if the smaller dog is more tenacious I would be far more intimidated by the larger dog. I know my next example will be apples and oranges but consider a boxer sugar Ray versus iron Mike I think a little sugar rays going to need a lot more stamina than Tyson. Tyson just need to hit you one time, sugar Ray has to beat you down and wear you out.

I imagine a Sugar Ray does have more stamina than an Iron Mike. I'm not sure about in dogs, but in humans, being big and having lots of muscle doesn't mean you have a bigger stronger heart. More muscle requires more blood pumping and more oxygen.

So, applying this to my question: Does a significantly larger Doberman tire out faster?

Of course, but he doesn't have to work as hard to kick your ass either. That's what I've been trying to say all along. on another note the larger Doberman is more likely to fall over dead from a heart attack.

My first dobe was a Euro. He had a high drive and energy but I put him in so many different sometimes difficult situations that he became a chameleon and adapted to all very well. He didn't stop when we were playing, training or whatever we were doing. He would continue any activity wide open, non stop regardless if he was tired he just never quit until I gave him his commands. I was young then and kept him mentally and physically active a lot. His stamina was amazing but he would also be a couch potato with me if weather was inclimate. I loved his stocky build and his drive. He was always with me, perhaps that's why he was never destructive or a barker. He was incredibly loyal and intelligent and learned new things quickly. His size scared a lot of people but the perception in the 70's and 80's were not favorable to the Doberman. I love the look and drive of a euro and especially loved my "Rocky"!!

Okay. What I was wondering about was would I be able to tire my big-boy Euro Dobe out more easily. :)
