American VS European Doberman

What is important in this discussion of European Dobermanns versus American Doberman Pinschers, is that neither is definitively "better." They are simply different. What matters is that you understand the differences between the two, and choose the dog that is right for you.
I think that exemplifies the first paragraph perfectly. (IMO) Not that i disagree with your point however that doesn't necessarily translate to a better dog just a better type of dog for your specific purposes, wants or needs in a Doberman.. Its pretty common knowledge that Show dogs dont hunt.. But every single breed has its show lines even utility types.. Different strokes for different folks..

Every time I have our girls out and about...and I'm trying to have "US" time.....here comes some one (So far all men no women....yet) saying " I just had to tell you how beautiful your dogs are...then...wait for it..........but....(yeah there's always the but)....your doberman...the black&brown one.... well they are born and breed "MAN EATERS"!!... your weimaraner is so beautiful how does it get along with the.....you know.. doberman? So I tell them " oh they "get along" great cuz the dobe is on a no weimaraner diet!! You think they would cut their losses and walk off but no, then "Well how did you get the doberman to grow so big? " then I reply "Which One?" (By now I'm sure ya'll know my weimaraner is a Fawn Doberman) but not these people.....Well "you only have one" So here I go again, trying to explain..... 1) The difference between a weimaraner and a fawn dobe. 2) You don't "Grow Them" that big. 3) There are American Dobermans and European Dobermans ...by this time they usually have a blank stare:confused:.....and I make my escape :weird:. So my point is, most people don't even know there are different color doberman let alone american and euro. I can only hope that the people that want the "Man Eaters" research:glasses: ALL Dobermans....thoroughly. And if they do choose the "Total Pansy" American, they don't one day need a "Man Eater". As for me I'll keep my black & tan...man-eating dobe AND my fawn & rust...man-eating dobe-weimaraner . Maybe if we keep mixing Amer. & Euro we might make "Pansy-Eaters":shakinghead:

Very well said!!!!!

I've been reading quite a bit about the differences in physical appearance, but is the health aspect set in stone somewhere? Do the euro dogs not live as long because they could have more health risks from being bigger? I would also like to go for light jogs with a doberman, would the bigger euro be able to do 3 miles at a 10 min. mile pace?

This is quite an interesting thread, you'd think people were discussing 2 different species. :dobe::dobe:

I've not heard anything about Euro Dobes not living as long due to size, that would be from genetics or lack of health testing. Any Doberman that is within the standards should have no issues from size. The Euro standard says the size is only 3/4 inch taller and 0.77 inches taller in females than the American standard. There is no American standard for weight but in general the average for males is only about 10 lbs lighter and for females only about 3lbs lighter than the European standard. The reason they appear so much larger is due mainly in part to larger bone structure in Euros.

As far as running, any Doberman can run and will love it. However all Dobes should be at least 14 months old before doing forced exercise to allow for proper physical development.

I've been doing some research about european lines, because I'd like to try with european lines, and I've found that they have show and working lines and I always thought european = work. What this means for me is that it is a different aesthetic, is not that europeans breed to work and actually the dogs form working breeders are a little different from those for conformation and most working line breeders only sell to people that actually want to train dobermans for IPO or another dog sport or work, although they still say european line has stronger temperament than american.

On the other hand I asked to one of the people showing dobermans in the show I went this weekend, about several things one ofcourse puppies -which by the way were unbelievably expensive (around $1900 dl) considering it was a nice family dog that could be presented in shows and make a couple of points-. Another question was what he thought about european dogs and actually said they are ugly, heavy with big heads and really there is no way that any one who likes the aesthetic of american line likes european line, and the character? he said something like they are bastards.... what the hell!! why does people think like that that's why doberman is split and with so many problems, i don't know if he was just wanting to sell or what but that was just even offensive for me, at the end is the same breed we are talking about

That is very clever - made me laugh!!!

Juls if I wanted a dog to run 3 miles with I would look for a Euro that not oversized as that can certainly add stress to bones and joints. If they are breeding to standard then you should be fine.

I am sorry to say that it has become a very heated subject. During WWII Germany could not even feed itself so rather than have the dogs starve to death they send some over here to try to save the breed. After the war we sent some back to help them rebuild the breed. When I look at a "Doberman" I see all the variances in style BUT I see a beautiful dog. I love the Doberman and a great dog is a great dog regardless of where it was born. Part of the problem is also the abandonment of the breed by its own breed club in Europe. We are a cropped and docked breed. They Doberman was never bred to have down ears and a tail and it ruins the look and the vast majority of the uncropped and dock I have seen are poorer specimens of the breed.

Since they created the breed - then had to send them to America to preserve the breed and we then in turn send some back from our breedings the two are very tightly intertwined. But because they have more emphasis on work ethic over there and the facilities and trainers to promote it they developed a different style. If you look back at the early dogs in the 20 and 40's our dog still more closely resemble the origins than the Euro. Both standards did increase the size from the original size Herr Dobermann bred for.

The one thing I dont' like about the new Euro standard is it allows for a longer dog which is in direct contradiction to their own standard IMHO. If it continues then that will become a real problem for them. The dog is to be compact and square so rectangle is off.

So from those challenges the gene pool is very saturated and the health issues are equally a plague everywhere. Unfortunately it is like little school children - HA HA HA mine is better than yours. IMHO All Dobermans are better than any other breed because they are DOBERMAN!!!

Do you know where I can find the changes in the standard? All i could find about the change is c/d but I haven't heard anything about other changes, like the lenght you mentioned, which is weird because I think they breed really square dogs even some dogs look exagerated imo. If the standard changes a lot may be the american and euro lines are going to be more separated and really compete with diferent standards and almost like two separated breeds.

You mentioned $1900 is too much. The average price for a good Doberman is between $1200-$2000. If you pay less you may have a dog from a backyard breeder. Vet bills will cost much more in the long run.
IF you decide on Euro Doberman do your research on a breeder. "Euro" Dobermans are popular these days as a "trademark"... some not reputable breeders abuse it. They run business and make money but don't produce a good Doberman.

I have two Euros and I am happy with my choice.
Gino's dam came pregnant from Europe to Canada and I bought him here.
Excellent dog! The best dog I have ever owned.
Asha is from Doberiech kennel in Ontario. Her pedigree is 100% European. Monica cross breeds Euros, NA and SA dogs and she is quite successful doing it.

NA dogs are easier. Most of them are friendly and sweet. Not much difference from other NA breeds.
Euros are stronger in appearence and personalities. They need more work. You will get more pleasure to own them if you harness their drive. If not... you will be in troubles.
You met a stupid defensive breeder at the show.... I may call NA "ugly" because I used to have Euros but it doesn't meat they are!

I know about the price, that's the problem, the bitch they offered does not come from a known kennel and they say it was "nice", not like a very good quality dog. Plus Mexico is not known for breed dogs of excelent quality. And I have asked to other well known and theorically good breeders here and the price is about 400 dls less, and in Europe and the prices are about the same (of course plus shipping)from very well known breeders too. I think they just wanted to take advantage.

Really amazing photos by the way

I was wondering why euro lines always have their mouth open? Does that cause them to slobber more like mastiffs? Just wondering.

I believe it is preferred to have Euro's stack with their mouths open in order to showcase the depth of their jaw. Competitors will get the dogs excited with a favorite toy in order to have them pant to be able to see their jaw. They are not always panting, panting is simply a way for the dog to cool itself down.

Could you explain what depth of jaw is? Deep in what direction?

I must admit I think I'm somewhat clueless on this Euro compared to American topic.

In my mind, I think of conformation Dobe compared to working Dobe (as in Schutzhund). We all know what a good conformation Dobe looks like. Most of the working Dobes I see are, frankly, too spindly looking, many of them with a certain look to the elbow region – not necessarily turned in or turned out – maybe you just notice the pointy elbow because it's not tucked up against a big, full deep chest. Or maybe it's not as far back under the body as it should be ("layback of shoulder??")

Of course I realize working Dobes are usually faster and quicker and more capable of tasks that require agility.

In my life I've only had three Dobes (and the current one is a young pup). Hey, when they live to 8+ years, there are only so many you can own. So my first was a backyard-bred, and was pretty far off the standard. My second was from working lines and had some of those qualities I mentioned, but not too much – especially as he matured and filled out. He was cow-hocked too. But I think he did just happened to be a bigger, studlier boy with a nice big head etc. so he looked pretty good to me.

My current pup, well, I'm concerned he may not match the big, rugged (yet refined) look of my last boy. We'll have to see!

Not trying to muddy the waters of this discussion, but does any of this make sense to any of you?

Help me understand how conformation vs. working factor into American vs. Euro.

Thickness vertically. Should appear powerful and strong enough to perform a bite with a deep and powerful grip. Too weak (lack of depth) of an under-jaw affects the bite. This is just all that I've gathered.

AKC Standard -
Head: Jaws full and powerful, well filled under the eyes.

FCI
MUZZLE: The muzzle must be in the right proportion with the upper head and must he strongly developed. The muzzle shall have depth. The mouth opening shall be wide, reaching to the molars. A good muzzle width must also be present on the upper and lower incisor area.

JAW/DENTITION/TEETH: Powerful broad upper and under jaw, scissor bite, 42 teeth correctly placed and normal size.

Well for what I've seen and based on talking with some people and a couple of euros I've been able to see in person, the diference is what you said. Working dogs seems to be tall and less heavy, with less deep chest, and maybe the group is more rounded. Well I think they are about the size of average american line show dogs, but comparatively less heavy than euros and of course with the diferences in conformation.
But in general I think the working dobermanns are more heterogeneous if you compare them between the dogs in Europe and América than the show euro and american lines. Maybe because they come from old euro lines. Plus for what I heard they are healthier than show lines in general.
And of course the temperament is a big diference no matter if we compare them with euro or american lines, although european dogs in general are more intense than american.
That is just my opinion, so maybe I am wrong, please let me know

Juls that is a myth. Both lines have the exact same health issues because they came from exactly the same stock in the beginning. Working lines die the same as show lines.
