AKC temperament testing

Brought home a plywood pallet from work today to at least expose her to a raised platform. She wasn't afraid of it, but also didn't want to sit in this instance, with Katyusha being outside with her at the time.20250610_205009.webp
There's always something to lay claim to between these two. In this case it was a long piece of grass.

I don't think they actually have to sit on it for the ATT but just walk over it.

:D

Just remember, this is a temperament test letting you see and know what your dog's natural reactions are to each test item. There is no wrong score. So, don't stress and overthink it by trying to train every item and possible scenario beforehand. One or two items are fine just so something isn't SO new and you know they'll do something with 5 minutes of prep at home but again, you want to witness their natural reaction with little training for it. If you are planning to breed, the scores can help with breeding decisions.
Good explanation.
Is it like the WAE in that there is no prep or training for it?
If you "fail" as in SCH BH Temperament test, are you unable to compete in AKC Obedience?

Those two venues have nothing to do with each other. BH must be passed to continue on to IGP1. AKC Novice Obedience has no required prerequisites.

AKC TT and WAE both state that being a temperament test, it is discouraged to "practice" the exercises in order to pass. Not sure without looking it up but I think the minimum age for both is about 18 months. By this time you should have (hopefully) exposed your dog naturally to many different things in life and if they had problems with it, then you work your puppy though those things. So when they say practice is discouraged, it doesn't mean avoiding those things, just be aware that ALL puppies should see and be exposed to different things while growing up. That's not cheating, that's just raising your dog properly. ;)

Got it!
Yep, Bonnie has been exposed to a lot since age 4 months including BWs favorite dogpark, which I know some people think is demonic and verboten, but try to stop Beautiful Wife from going to her happy place with all our dogs in past...
Bonnie has learned her Doggie MMA blocking skilz from Mals, GSDs, and Siberians, her Punching skilzs from Boxers and her groundwork rolling in the dirt with pitty pups, and a couple of older french mastiffs who adopted her like Big Sisters and punish strays that enter the Circle of Trust without a background check..,
she is a big hit at HomeDepotDogPark, Kahoots, beach cafes and coffee shops and
is getting very tired of me using neighborhood kids and strangers who want to pet my dog as training aids for "introductions" as in the AKC CGC...🤣

thanks @Ravenbird

So another thing I'm wondering is if a dog has to be on a flat collar or if a slip lead is allowed?
I normally use something like this to take them out and about but a flat collar will work too if that's all that's allowed.

Just to add....people need to remember that this test is not about training, it's about temperament. The dog does NOT have to do everything perfectly. The dog can even react in what some may think of as a fail by spooking, it's about how they recover from that scare that matters. Any dog raised with normal exposure to life that has a cprrect temperament should ace this test. You a get failure, it's okay cause now you know what to work on. And yes there are confidence building things you can do to help the dog.

We did the Temperament Test with Arson in 2022 at the UDC Nationals.

We used a flat 2" wide leather collar.
