Kali is going on 15 years old this year. She's had a heart murmur for many years. I can't remember when the vet first diagnosed it. Back then it was rated as a one. Now she's at a four. 
I realize it's not good. And it really eliminates any kind of surgery that she might need going forward. When she first got the glaucoma the vet and I talked about removing the eye if it became a problem. But he said even though it's a easy 30 minute surgery, he didn't think he can do it. He said, I don't think I can put her under without losing her.
So I knew that if anything happened, surgery was out.
So recently, within the last couple of weeks, she's been coughing. Every once in a while at first. But it got progressively worse. She doesn't do much anymore. She sleeps a lot and usually when she's sleeping she's fine. Its when she gets up and does any amount of exercise. I'm assuming its fluid around the heart.
But lately in the middle of the night she would cough. On and off, all night. Neither one of us was getting much sleep. She's in her crate right next to me in the bedroom. The coughing was loud and it would go on and on.
Last Saturday night I got up in the middle of the night and took her outside to potty to see if that would help. Afterward, she went into the laundry room to get a drink of water and I decided it might be a good idea to put her bed in there and put the gate up for the night. We both needed our sleep.
It worked out very well. She slept in her bed all night, had availability to water and pee pads around the floor if she needed it. I can still hear her coughing once in awhile but she seemed to do very well with that situation.
So last week after I was Googling the coughing someone had mentioned that the vet put her dog on Vetmedin and Furosemide and they were like a new dog!
So on Friday I called my vet and talked to the tech about it. The vet was gone for the day but today they called and said that I could pick up the medication. So she's on the first dose tonight. A half a pill each every 12 hours. I know one is a diuretic so I'm already thinking that I'll be letting her out a lot. But if this helps her feel better that's okay!
