Falcon's page

We entered a double trial Friday only, hoping to earn Falcon's CD. Apparently, he did not have enough exercise before we left, because he was SO JACKED UP at the show! He was not focused, and acted as though he had never been to a dogshow before . As we were going into the ring; he was busy watching Utility next to us, and as a dog went over the jump during our off leash heeling, his hair went up and he barked. I grabbed him, as the judge excused us. She apologized; and I told her I should have excused myself before it got to that....I could see this was not going to work; but powered through, thinking he would settle in. So we walked around the fairgrounds after, and let him visit with all kinds of people. He seemed to have settled in by afternoon, and did beautifully in the afternoon trial :)...until the sit stay. We had 5 seconds left, and he laid down :p. I was so thankful that he at least did everything else beautifully. So we will have to search for another show. When I got home, I had ordered photos from the last show we were at where he did so well in Novice, and earned his Rally Intermediate title. So here are a few from a good day!

Yup, some days are gold, and some days not so much! Been there, so know how it feels. But congratulations for doing a days worth of work, getting some input and some more knowledge about what you need to work on. And your pictures from the last trial are Beautiful!!! Thanks as always for sharing!

Beautiful photos you both look so happy 😀

I agree that we all have our days and all we can do is smile and shrug it off.

Those are great photos and he looks like he's really enjoying himself.

Great thinking!

Jeesh, he sure is a handsome Doberman! He looks like he had a grand ole time.

We entered a show last month, to try for that final CD leg....first day Falcon did nicely until the stays....he was SO fidgety, that I pulled him before they started. Then this video is the second day attempt....he had a nice run, and then laid down on the sit. I didn't notice the Rot on the end...and wonder if this is the dog that had him so ansy the day before? Try, try again!

Best way to test your dog and 'prove' commands is with distractions.

That rottie helped make it a fair test in my opinion.

Both of my girls would have failed that same test under those same circumstances if done today. This I am sure of...

Dystopia would have laid down just like yours did because she is old and laying down is what she prefers to do if she can help it. I am OK with that and plan to accommodate her the best I can as she gets even older. :)

Agatha would have went to go check him out as soon as he started moving, very possibly would have tried to hump him. Her sit and stay would have been good for a handful of seconds at best. At an event like that I can guarantee you that she would have caused many other dogs to fail that test if she had been present. :)

Try try again is right! You'll get there for sure. I thought Falcon was very composed. The Rott was a bit of a distraction, but after he got up, Falcon still stayed pretty composed I think! If anything, I think he was looking relaxed after looking around a bit, like "hmm, looks like we're all done, may as well take a rest here!" LOL. You may remember Asha flopped down and rolled (it was outdoors on the grass) with 10 seconds left in her sit.

He looks great and you've done a great job with training him!

Gorgeous pup how did I miss this thread befote...🧐

Hey, a very Nice try!
So cool to be working together towards something useful...its a journey, amiright?

Ya, I'm considering AKC OB at suggestion of the SD trainer.

IIRC and pardon my ignorance- on terms etc.
Thats a two minute sit at level one?

Pretty sure BYB Bonnie would do same;
"ok, I've sat here long enuff, lets chill...🤣"

Here is the first part - my sister was with me, and changed the verticle to landscape 1/2 way through my run.....so my hubby had to doctor it so I could load on You tub
Nice! He really looks like he's happy to try to please you! You'll get it next time, betcha!

Definitely increases the bond with you and your dog, zero disadvantages!

Lots to learn regarding the patterns and rules, but if you read through the threads under Obedience & Performance Sports, you can learn from us (hahaha & our mistakes) here. Pinned post at the top about obedience judges is good, then several of us have old threads and videos of our training and trials. Wake up some old threads with your questions!

I am happy when I can get someone to video my run, so I can learn from my mistakes, as well as share with others! I love doing dog sports, it truly builds that bond. In Novice, it is only a 1 minute sit stay, then 1 minute down stay, on leash...in the old days, it was a 3 minute sit; no leash, and you and the other handlers went across the ring as your dogs stay with one another. I personally only saw one bad experience; thank God it did not involve my boy at the time...but heard of many other times when one dog does the stare at another during the stays, and they charge toward one another, or one dog jumps a smaller dog - I believe that is why they changed the rules a few years back, and made it on leash....they took the out of sight stays out of the Open class completely. I think that is where they had the most issues with dogs making moves on one another...the handlers in that class, would leave the dogs in a stay, and have to leave the ring and go where the dogs could not see them.
Scary for the judge when something would go wrong!

Falcon gets a BIG GOLD STAR tonight! I was walking our property around 5:30, and I take them individually before it gets dark on leash out front because you know how Dobermans are when it is dusk - high alert, and we have far too many deer and critters who wander out of the woods...
So I am just heading towards the front door because now it is dark out, and I barely see the neighbors cat charge across the street to their house; and Falcon starts to bark and take off to the end of the leash....and it snaps, and he keeps going - just then these peoples dachshund starts barking from their driveway, and I called "FALCON COME" just once; and he spun around before getting to the street and came right back to me.
I am so unbelievable proud of him....I am afraid Glory would not have come back to me in this situation. Note to self; no more 15 year old leather leashes!
