Teeth questions

I thought I had seen enough Doberman teeth over the years to have a general idea of what they were supposed to look like but this has me stumped.

Could someone please take a look at these and tell me if I am just imagining stuff or not?

This is Dystopias front teeth (about 8yrs old and in need of a Veterinary cleaning but otherwise natural and undamaged / unaltered teeth). Notice how the canine teeth (fangs) are somewhat pointed and the top / front teeth between them are not at all flat across their surface. Almost as if they have a 'tip' in the middle of them?

Now look at Agathas teeth and notice how the canines (fangs) almost look flattened across the tops -

Same with respect to her top (and bottom) front teeth - Is it just me or does it look like they were flattened out with a file?

Agatha is only 2 1/2 yrs old and that is not at all what I would call 'normal' wear. I have not as yet asked her previous owner lady if she had that done cause if she did knowingly have such a thing done to this girl - I am going to say bad words to her about it. Lots of bad words... :rage:

I am thinking they BOTH need a visit to a 'proper' doggie dentist. Dystopia for a good cleaning and exam (which she was due for anyway because of her age) and Agatha to see how bad of a mess somebody made of her permanent teeth because they were an idiot. :rage:

Just in case anyone was curious - Dystopia gave me no grief at all when I cranked her mouth open with one hand and was taking pictures with the other. Girl did not give a shit about me inspecting her teeth and messing around in her mouth. Same thing if I want to clip her nails - She is not going to give a darn or become distressed in any way if I want to mess with her feet for whatever reason.

Agatha did not like me messing with her teeth and mouth at all. Had to short leash / attach her to me directly to keep her from running AWAY from handling her mouth like I was. No growling or biting (all my fingers is still intact and undamaged) but could tell she definitely did not like it.

Agatha 'used to be' shy about me handling her feet the first few times I went to clip her nails. It was a 'had to attach her to me to keep her from running off' thing those first few times. Not nearly as bad currently. Girl likes to snugglebug with me at night times and I have been trying to give her a few minutes of feet rubbing at some point every night before I go to sleep when she does. She is quickly getting over her nervousness about me handling her feet when I want to. :)

If I had to rate this girls behavior as far as biting and aggression is concerned to the previous Dober girls I have owned - I would put Agatha about in the middle. The middle range of a bunch of very mild Doberman girls... Agatha is barkey and tries to be territorial to a small extent but nothing that I would consider anywhere near excessive for the breed. Yes, she will bark and run at a stray dog near HER yard (her territory) but that same random dog encounter at the local Tractor Supply gets zero reaction out of her. Not a peep out of her in that environment. Dystopia has no wounds at all and I am not missing any fingers so far.

Not at all what I would consider an overly aggressive dog in any way.

Do they often get access to tennis balls? They can be like sandpaper to 'softer' teeth, I believe. My sisters Shepherds both had flattened canines and they were tennis ball fiends.
Was going to seem the same tennis balls and super hard bones. Friend of mine let her Doberman chew on femur bones to occupy his time and too oftenshe let it happen. Now his canines are ground down flat, yet she refuses to give him benebones which I think are the best for them.

I agree that tennis balls and really hard things like antlers can wear them down like that. Our dogs never get tennis balls but we do have a few elk antlers that they chew on from time to time.

I don't know....they do look filed down to me....it is just so symetrical. Bone wearing would not be so perfect :(.

Rose has flattened canines. She's a super chewed. Mostly sticks and chuck it ball ultras. Very symmetrical so I believe it can happen naturally20250610_173726.webp

I am pretty darn sure they were filed. It is not just the canines - It is the top and bottom front teeth as well and way to 'perfect' to be done by any sort of tennis balls or bone stuff.

Did you notice the front teeth differences between the two dogs? How straight the line is on Agathas top and bottom front teeth is?

Dystopia has shredded plenty of tennis balls and beef knuckles in her 8 years and her front teeth look nothing like Agathas...

Regardless, I plan to have my Vet lady look at them and see what she says. Appreciate the head up about 'softer' teeth - I will ask her about that and if there is a way to check or not.

I honestly had no idea that there even was such a thing as people filing on dogs teeth like this until I noticed Agathas teeth and started doing some searching and reading. Come to find out there really are people that do this sort of garbage and Vets that will do it for them. :(

I would venture to say it's the bite. If the teeth hit teeth for 8 years, they will wear. If they have a scissors bite they miss just a fraction and don't wear down. The canines that are blunt on the end are almost always due to constant ball play or something they would grip and hold a lot.

You want the molars to line up like this:

The front teeth should look like this:

As pictured above ^^^ the level bite will do the "filing" that makes them flat. The Scissors bite hangs over just ever so slightly so that doesn't happen, the under & over shot mouths are undesirable in our breed.

A perfect Doberman mouth has 42 teeth and a Scissors bite.

Hope this helps!

Wow, very cool! Thanks for sharing @Ravenbird

That would be so strange. At what age did you get this Dobe?

I was gonna' say: If the top teeth that are so evenly flat are hitting the bottom teeth, it could cause that effect. The Dobe is supposed to have a "scissors bite" where the top front teeth slightly overlap the lower front teeth. They certainly can touch. Perhaps if your Dobe has a "level bite" where the front teeth meet evenly to where the tips touch, it could have ground them down over the years.

Much appreciate sir.

That is exactly what I thought they were supposed to look like (and what Dystopias look like even with her being 8 yrs old).

I will shoot the lady a text tomorror to confirm but I will bet money she had Agathas teeth filed. Even at ONLY just 2 1/2 yrs old her front teeth (top and bottom) are smooth as glass and do NOT look like that.
