What flea and tick prevention do you use besides heart worm medicine..

Quality is extremely important, some cheap versions can be toxic, especially when using in nose work. Please use only the oils that are specifically used by the different venues. You can find sources by google-search, here's a company that has AKC, UKC, etc. listed.

To save money, just get the refill bottles and make your own q-tips. Never ever use essential oils found on the shelf at Walmart or dollar stores.
Good to know. I've never really had an interest in scent work but I do use a lot of essential oils and quality is important in my use.

I had this one on my shirt yesterday and hubby has had quite a few already.
Thanks for reminding me to embrace the dry high desert heat and severe drought we're in down here. I absolutely do not miss fleas and ticks and mosquitoes! Asha had her wellness vet visit a few weeks ago and for the first time I asked for a stool sample to be analyzed for worms. I have never used any de-wormer on her since I got her over 5 years ago (she had the normal puppy dewormer routine at her breeders). Everything was negative.

I don't believe in de-worming them either unless their stool sample comes up positive. Of course the Heartgard is effective against some worms but I don't give it for that reason. Of course puppies need it when they're little but the breeder normally takes care of that.

I made it 20 yrs of having Dobermans around before the one particular neighbor had an infestation and did not want to spend the money or time to deal with it and let his problems grow - Over into MY yard.

Knew he was having a problem with his dogs and did not even warn me so I could take precautions... :cus:

That's too bad and the same goes with fleas in the southern states.

Sorry Jan. I should have been more clear.

My idiot neighbor had a flea infestation and did very little to nothing about it other than possibly a flea dip here or there. Never treated his yard , never treated his home, never 'solved' his problem so it grew bigger and bigger until the fleas cam over into MY yard.

Fortunately for me - That idiot MOVED! :)

I guess Wondercide hasn't been mentioned but it is supposed to be effective for fleas and ticks too. I have a bottle of the Lemongrass scent and it's too overwhelming for me so I have to spray it on a paper towel and wipe them down with it. The cedarwood smells great though.

Boy, I can't believe that this thread is a year old! I remember reading it and wanted to respond to it! Where does time go??

Anyway, I give Annie Heartgard Plus and Pet Armor Plus topical for the fleas and ticks. These were recommended by my horse vet. He told me that the chewables for the ticks, (Next Guard I believe?) were creating seizures. I had heard that before too so when he reiterated it, I was all for the topical. He said he's never heard of a problem with that. No problems with either one but I always give them to her a week or so apart.

Yes if I would have responded last year I would have added that to my post too because I use that a lot! :thumbsup2: I spray it on Annie, myself and some that I spray around the property. I've sprayed it in my horse stalls too.

A few days ago I had some ants in my breakfast room. I hardly ever have ants so I was kind of freaking out like, what the hell are these things doing here!! LOL They were right along the baseboard and I kept vacuuming him up. And then I was thinking, what is it that I've read about a natural way of getting rid of ants? And then I'm like, duh, I have Wondercide! I sprayed the area and they were gone! Mine are mainly peppermint scented and I think it smells great! I think the one for outdoors is a cedar smell and again, not a bad smell at all.

So far we've only seen three ticks. One my husband saw on Annie when they were out in the barn. It was just walking across her back. Hopefully trying to find its way off! LOL but my husband saw it, took it off and split it in four different pieces. LOL He always makes sure they're deader than dead.:biggrin:

Then one day he had one crawling on himself. And then it finally got to me. I came in the house and was getting dinner ready and I kept feeling something on the back of my neck. My hair was up, like it always is when it's hot out and I kept feeling back there thinking it might be a straight hair or something. When my husband came in I said, take a look at my neck, is there something there? And he says yep. When he showed me it was so stinking small then neither one of us knew what it was. I thought it was one of those minute red spiders. I don't know what they are but I've seen these tiny things before so I dismissed it and walked away. He said, get me the magnifying glass. He said, yep it's a baby tick! I'm like😳😳😳 What??? Honestly we both had to look at it through the small zoomed in area of a magnifying glass because it was so small.. Sure enough, it was a tick. But I couldn't believe how small it was. I didn't think it was really a baby tick. I thought it was a deer tick. But then somebody else told me it could have just been a baby tick.

So I was itching and freaking for the next half hour. :pullhair::pullhair::pullhair:Ick Ick Ick!!!! I cannot stand those things I just cannot stand them. They drive me freaking nuts. They make me feel itchy, they look disgusting and I just hate them! :machinegun::machinegun::machinegun:

At least none of them were embedded! That freaks me out even worse!

Or a deer tick. They are so tiny that they're nearly impossible to find. Oddly, we've had way more of those than regular ticks the last few years. I just read an article yesterday about how disease ridden deer ticks are being dropped all over the US as a form of warfare. I'm guessing that's click bait but it does make you think.

I have been using the a.i. spinosad as topical exclusively for fleas. It is a off label use but very effective. I do wipe down every 3 to 4 weeks at .75$ a application.

It does make you wonder! I have both seen and read that this is the worst year for ticks in a decade. Add to that we know more about ticks and are fighting them harder than I ever remember and the diseases are getting more strange by the day. My son's best best friend was just diagnosed with Alpha-gal syndrome. Unfortunately him for his is pretty severe and he had to give up his career as a chef.
