Urine marking

Is it normal for females to urine mark when not in heat? Pepper is starting to do it often on walks. She’ll sniff a might poll, then pee around it. She sometimes tries to lift her leg lol, but it doesn’t work so well.

Last heat was Dec-Jan. She had her false pregnancy after it.

My old dog (spayed female) would do this. Almost worse than my boy lol. I’d walk them both individually and they’d both just keep marking where the other one went 😂

Good to know! She’s not alpha so I’m like what’s this new thing Pepper?!

Spayed soon so we will see!

Have only had 2 Vets try to give me the Spay speech in the last 20 years.

2 out of at least 20 different Vets...

In that group that never gave me the speech 2 were Doberman breeders... None of their older and non-breeding females were spayed yet they could have easily done so themselves being Vets and having their own clinics... I wonder why those Vets / Breeders chose to not do that surgery on their girls??? :)

So far I have only had female Dobermans and have never had one develop any issues due to keeping their girlie parts for their entire life.

That girl in the picture is the only girl I have had so far where underwear training was just a tiny bit difficult. Only because she was 'pee pad' trained to where she knew she had a safe place to have any 'accident' / I 'don't feel like holding it any longer' in.

The underwear used to be a problem there if she had to get up and go pee in the middle of the night during that time.

If a tiny bit of extra work on my part doing the underwear training stuff when needed during the dogs lifespan can somehow possibly have positive effects on the dogs overall lifespan - I am all for it and willing to spend that extra bit of time and do the extra work involved! :)

It is normal, but usually more frequent and more obvious when in heat. If you are in casual hikes or walk, especially off leash I would let her do whatever she wants.

IF she starts to get obsessed about it and it starts (even ONCE) when you are doing any kind of training session, obedience or especially nose work you should do a quick correction. "No!" and leash correction and take her out of the work area. She won't know it's "against the rules" in that particular scenario unless you let her know in no uncertain terms. And also if you're wanting to compete or trial in anything, use a specific collar/harness for that and never allow her to potty with that equipment on. For example, from the very start when I practiced nose work I used a little nylon harness. Before practice I would take her out in the potty area on her prong collar or flat collar and ask for potty. After she pees, I take her back to the car, put her harness on then we are ready to search. When doing IGP, I always used a fur saver, so I never took her to the potty area with a fur saver on. Ever. So far, she has never tried to pee in any training or event area. (((knocking on wood))) In other words I try to do everything to avoid having to correct her. If you never trial or compete, it probably won't ever be a big deal and this sounds like an outdoors dog scent thing, I'd lay bets she would never ever mark in your house.

A few of our females have been markers and in many cases it was to cover where a fox or wolf marked.

That doesn't make a bit of difference when it comes to marking.

Thank you for posting that.

Lots of people think those surgeries miraculously solve all sorts of behavior issues when most of the times they do not.
