Does anyone have updated info on Irongate? I know Eve is has a wonderful reputation. She has produced some great Dobes, does everything right as a breeder ,etc. But,I can't find anything recent on her dogs or breedings. The last comments I saw on "another board" was in 2016. Also if anyone has an opinion between Sharjet and Irongate.
Also any pictures would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I don't have any information either, except as you stated, she has a wonderful reputation. She is an evaluator for WAE and I saw that she was still doing that last year, so she's still around.

Thank you. I did speak to Eve and she is still breeding. I'm hoping someone has personal experience or knowledge on Irongate Dobes versus Sharjet. Eve has over 60yrs experience and Sharjet over 40 and I clicked with both breeders.
TIA

Are you on the market for a new pup? Any particular goals with the doggo, if so?

I've researched breeders on DPCA'S breeder referral list for almost 2yrs. Have narrowed it down to these two. We are experienced owners ,this will be our 3rd. Pet/ companion . Doing agility, Scent work for fun only. Will do training as we always have ,both AKC puppy classes and personal training CGC definitely and basic obedience. I check health testing, longevity and lines used on Dobequest and OFA. I know both breeders are excellent. Eve of Irongate has earned several awards from DPCA and has the top Dobe in agility. Eve has over 135 Dobes in the DPCA Longevity Program. Sharjet also has several Dobes in the longevity program. I also clicked with each breeder personally. We need to make a final decision soon. So, I'm curious if anyone has had personal experience with either breeders Dobes or knows of anyone who has.
I know enough about the breeders to know they both would be great. I'm mainly seeking information on any differences in the look of the dogs from both breeders. Sharjet has strong Foxfire in her lines and I'm very familiar with Michelle Santana's dogs, but not in person. Irongate has Foxfire further back in the bitch she plans on breeding. I'm not sure which stud Eve of Irongate will use yet. As far as all around ability, health and temperament a pup from either one would be a amazing! Hope that helps

Sounds like you have done your research, above and beyond, and that a pup from either breeder would be great. If you are interested in agility, go with the breeder that has dogs that have excelled in agility, especially at higher levels. Looking forward to hearing who you choose and seeing a puppy announcement post when it is time! Very exciting times.

Hi - I have a dog by one of Sharon's stud. He is a fantastic dog, AKC champion and half way to his Grand, performance titles before 2 years and thinks he is a 90 lapdog. One of the most balanced temperaments you can ask for, loves everyone he meets. However, he does have a lot of drive and needs to be active, but he is out of a Euro working line dam. I don't think you could go wrong with one of her dogs. I am not familiar with Irongate.

Thank you. We are looking for a dog with drive ,even if what we do is just for fun, for him and us. Our last was Euro and had the personality and drive you describe. I have a friend who has an 18mo old male from Sharon. He only weighs about 68 to 70 bls now, so on the low end of AKC standards. Sharon did tell her she felt he was under weight. His Dam only weighs 60bls ,but his sire weighs 93bls. Our boy weighed 90 to 95 and our American girl was 90lbs. I had hoped to hear from someone who had a Sharjet male that was at least 85bls. We miss the Euro build, but it's hard to find a preservation breeder for Euros. Irongate is Eve Auch and she has been breeding over 60 yrs. DPCA Sliver Apex recipient, top Dobe in agility and everything a breeder should be,as is Sharon of Sharjet.
Feeling blessed to have a pup from either. Now trying to make what feels like an impossible decision on which way to go. I appreciate your input very much. Thank you again.

If you have a choice, look at the planned matings - the sire & dam and what they excelled at and what they have produced and if they are the type you prefer looking at. As you mentioned, they can be bigger or smaller, heavy or light boned, a softer or sharper temperament and drive and all still be within standard! For active sport I prefer a lighter built dog, but that's just my opinion.

The pedigrees will be on Dobequest. Most breeders, unless it's for a stud, tend to not post pictures or weight and height. I understand they are busy just posting health testing on Dobequest and OFA.

That's a lot for an American girl.
90lbs is the high end of the AKC standard for females. She was within the standard for height at the withers. FCI euro standards for a female are smaller, with the top weight at 77lbs. People sometimes think Euros weigh more and are larger overall. The weights for Euros by FCI standards are lower than AKC for Americans .

True! I rarely see height & weights on Dobequest. But the titles would (should) be listed. Once you get on their wait list I would assume you could have actual conversation with them and ask about physical size? I could tell by photos that I liked the bitch I was in line to get a puppy from but I asked in a phone conversation with the breeder how much she weighed during her mature sport years, before breeding. I absolutely didn't want a larger girl. I'm just saying know what you personally want and what is most important to you and what you are willing to compromise on - then ask the breeder how their dogs match up to what you're looking for.

My biggest frustration in looking at breeders and their information to sort through is that it's practically non-existent, especially from some of the best breeders. I know they are busy, but when nothing is updated for years or you can't even find a website or a FB page it's just sad. You want to see photos and pedigrees and paired matings. All they have to do is post a banner at the top and say their wait list is years long and they aren't taking applications, but still a yearly update so you learn what lines are successful & what you are attracted to is so helpful. Of course there are many that are open and out there, but half the time the fanciest websites are not at all the best breeders. So much to sift through, especially for first time buyers. Your opening statement is what I'm referring to - one of the best breeders in the country and to search her out to even apply for a puppy seems impossible if you don't have direct contacts. Sigh.

Yes! I’ve seen so many websites that have not been updated in 5 plus years… now that I’m involved with the show world I know these people are still breeding, but how is the “general public” supposed to know? I know they could contact the breeder but I bet many won’t if it looks like they aren’t active.

These two breeders have been around yrs. Sharjet 40+ and Irongate 60+. Neither of them have FB or websites. Most of the breeders on DPCA'S breeder referral list didn't have either in the past. Some are beginning to have websites or FB ,but it's usually the newer breeders ,except for Foxfire, who has a FB page. Of course, I didn't go through the entire list. Sharjet and Irongate are more by reputation, shows , and events. We have already been told by both breeders that their next pup is ours. I clicked with both breeders, talked for hrs and know the breeding practices of both.
They both know this will be our third and we have had two high drive Dobes before. I have been speaking with breeders for the past two years. We have been on a waiting list with a newer breeder ( who co-breeds) with Sharjet for 18 months and 1st on her waist list too. But her last three breedings have failed.
Maybe both Sharon and Eve took pity on us for already waiting so long. We feel very blessed to know if either have a black male he's ours. Of course, we would never have two pups at the same time. So now the decision. Maybe it will be made for us if only one has a black male. One will be breeding before the other. Irongate did send me a picture of the bitch she will be breeding. She is gorgeous ,but she hasn't decided on the stud yet.
I know people would love a pup from either and so will
we. Like most Dobe owners they're our babies. Sharjet has strong Foxfire lines in almost every dog. Foxfire focuses on showing. But her dogs owned by others have excelled at other venues as well. Irongate has all around Dobes too,but has the number one Dobe in the country in agility. We aren't planning in titling in a sport or showing. But,we always do CGC , after AKC puppy classes and work with individual trainers too for obedience. We would do some sport to give him an outlet just for fun. I had hoped someone might have seen their Dobes at shows. One is 15hrs away and requires two vists after the pups are 6 weeks. People fly or drive from much further, so she won't change her mind, especially after 60+yrs. The other is 22 hrs away. The distance is fine,we always planned on going wherever we needed to for a pup. It looks as if we will have to make the decision on our own . Or as I said, maybe only one will have a black male. What a problem to have! lol
Thank you for your response. It is appreciated.

It is a challenge for first time buyers who are trying to buy from a preservation breeder vs a byb. I use DPCA'S breeder referral list. But,the information isn't always updated. Sharjet just removed herself from their list. If I didn't have a personal contact, I would have needed to search out someone who had her phone number. I have noticed some of the breeders are breeding more often than yrs ago. And that includes Foxfire and Sharjet as well as other breeders who have been breeding for years. Irongate breeds once a year. I don't know if not breeding during Covid had an effect or if more people are seeking out the breeders on DPCA'S list.
Some people are watching Charles Lindsay and want a dog like Bruce. RDC who bred Bruce has their pick of buyers and they will only sell to people living in CA.
I still encourage people to use DPCA'S list and check their health testing on Dobequest or OFA. Speak to the breeders and see who they click with. I know new buyers may feel intimidated to call the breeders. But if breeders don't want people to call them they shouldn't be on DPCA'S list or just don't list a phone number. No one had a problem speaking with me . I found out two of the best, do not like email, text or anything electronic.
