She started getting sick late yesterday afternoon (of course after the vet closed) and couldn't stop vomiting and had nasty bloody diarrhea. Then she started whining and moaning and then growling/snarling at Elroy out of the blue. Poor guy was scared because he was even in the next room by me and didn't understand what he did wrong.
I called our vets office first thing this morning and the receptionist said all of their urgent care spots were filled so they couldn't get us in. I remember our vet telling us to tell them we are long time clients so she went and talked to him and right away he said he wants to see her.

We were suspecting an obstruction since she did eat a big wad of chewed up towel well over a month ago that she vomited up and ate again before I could clean it up. I threw all of that stuff away a long time ago but I know some stuff can sit in the intestines for quite a while. He did an x-ray and bloodwork and the x-ray didn't show an obstruction but he said that if it's cloth it won't show up so he had to give her some barium and check a little later. She did have a ton of gas, an infection in the intestines, severe dehydration and pancreatitis so he admitted her to keep her on IV's. He called about an hour ago and said the barium passed all the way through so there is no obstruction but her intestines are stretched out and extremely sore so she must have passed something through prior to this that made her so sick. At any rate, we can pick her up late this afternoon and she needs to be on meds and a bland diet for about a week. I'm so relieved that it wasn't worse and that she didn't need surgery.

They give us grey hair...

Oh @JanS I am terribly sorry to hear this is going on, I am happy to hear that Olive is recovering and well.

Please keep us updated and glad you will be picking her up today.

Thinking of you guys ❤️

oh thank you for the update that she is coming home.. i can imagine the hell of what you went through.. i have been through this when Luke ate his braided leather collar from germany......... he did need the surgery.. so i am happy to hear Olive was not worse and i am sure the meds will make her healthy and happy again.. but word of caution.. never trust her because if they do this .. they will do it again... until they mature enough to know better........

Well hell Olive…what are you thinking girl??

Damn, I sure hope she recovers okay from this. Y’all and Elroy have to be all out of sorts.

Thinking of you, please keep us updated.

Oh no, I hope she continues to improve once she’s home. Poor thing. Let us know how her spirits are when you get a chance.

Completely agree!
Jan and some of the veteran members here probably remember some of Rocky’s history there.
He’s experienced the bips just like Olive just did.

Thanks everyone! The support is always helpful and she got home a little while ago and seems much perkier. We're so relieved and happy that things are better since we were sick to our stomach with worry last night and this morning.

I went through the house quite a while ago and threw everything away that would be small enough to swallow.

ps.. just watch those socks.. especially hubby's...... we had to put them up really high... ..lol.. so happy that she is going to be okay......

Oh no! I’m sorry she wasn’t feeling well but glad to hear it wasn’t a blockage, and that she’s back home now!

Oh wow, Jan, that had to suck! Nothing like when they show signs of being sick and we just don't know what it is. Phew, I'm glad your vet realized who you were and decided to see her. I'm so glad this is getting resolved without surgery and Olive is feeling better! I bet you and hubby will sleep a lot better tonight!!

What a relief that Olive is back home and recovering well. That must have been a hellish night to endure for you all!

Just now checking in and see this! Glad to see the latest update that she's home and feeling better. Sending healing thoughts ❤️

Omg, I'm just catching this now!! Wow, I'm so sorry you guys had such a scare!! Poor Olive too! I'm so glad she's safe and home. Geez, why do these guys need to swallow everything! I'm constantly watching Annie for that. Sending good thoughts and prayers 🙏.

Yeah, I have told my daughters and wife multiple times: Just be mentally prepared that one day we will probably have to take Zephyr to the hospital and potentially spend thousands of dollars or maybe even have him put down. He's a vacuum cleaner and LOVES to chew wood. I gave up early on with trying to forbid him chewing wood (outdoor type of wood – he does not chew furniture).

But small things on the floor he picks up and at least samples to see what they are. We are just trusting him, and so far he is fine. There may well be a few pieces of tennis ball in his gut though. Tennis balls, I do strictly try to prevent him from chewing, but at the "dog park" it's hard because so many people bring them.

Again, I'm so glad Olive is recovering!!

And I've told my husband many of the horror stories we've all seen here over the years. And I tell him, that's why I watch her like a hawk!! That's why I'm always saying, drop it, leave it, no no! We all know babies put everything in their mouth. That's just how they learn about life. Puppies are the same. I'm hoping that my diligent efforts will stop something that could become a habit. I remember watching a dog whisperer show where a dog was eating rocks! She couldn't stop him! That's horrible and I don't know why they would start that. But again, that's why I try and watch every move she makes. It's exhausting but hopefully worth it!

Oh yes. I strictly forbid him putting rocks in his mouth. From the little I've seen of him with rocks in his mouth, he just mouths them and moves them around his mouth but doesn't eat them. It sure is a matter of trust, like the Billy Joel song says. But I do demand he spits rocks out right away if I catch him. I did inquire with his breeder if they have ever had a bowel obstruction in any of their dogs. He said no, and said they let them chew any organic matter and it's fine. He said they sometimes just like the feel of rocks in their mouth but don't eat them.

Unfortunately, despite my training methods that have worked with my Dobes, Zephyr will sometimes (especially with tennis ball pieces) just do that despicable "i'm just gonna hurry up and swallow the item before my owner can get to me" thing. I put my hand deep down his throat to try to get the item, but he is good at fully swallowing tennis ball parts. Ggrrrrrrrrrr.
