SAR dog Search and rescue

Worked in my office after hours Friday. Gilly clocked some overtime (4th floor, 5 story building, for this problem, he was confined to the stairwell. The hooman got her steps in lol!) .

This elevated stairwell scent problem threw him for a loop for a bit! Gilly kept catching the scent, running up the stairs to the landing where it curved then running back . It is tricky for him to pinpoint elevated source. But I want him to be reliable when it comes to hangings. I like his intensity in the eyes when he finally figures it out!

I wonder too if the breed is more sensitive to that situation than other breeds? I feel like Dobermans on a whole are so in tune to humans that this is a very normal response Id expect from the breed.

I missed this whole part of the discussion, sorry guys!! I DO think Gilly is a bit more sensitive than the other SAR dogs. Like, the rest of my team is mostly border collies or other collies, or working line labs. I kind of feel that Gilly can be a bit more analytical than either of those. (Working line labs were a shock to me- NOTHING like the neighborhood pets I'd grown up with. I think they're high on drive and lower on... brains, hehehe ). Downside for gilly, though, is because he is more analytical, he is also.sometimes more cautious. He will approach potential threats such as fresh remains, overly shiny and glossy floors, or farm equipment with the caution they deserve!

Thank you so much!! It is so cool to see him start to figure things out on his own and have that moment of recognition. Gilly and I are the most inexperienced on the team, but we are starting to hold our own (knock on wood lol).

It was rainy and we were lazy at sar this tuesday so we made our own redneck agility course . Gilly... tried his best lol. (Thankfully the border collie was out, so we didn't get shown up TOO badly).

Incredibly effective using the wind to their advantage! Loved how when they got exactly down wind the dog hit the scent.

I will never not be fascinated by dogs sense of smell - it wows me every time!

Hiiii everyone!! Gilly and I are still alive!!! Been doing a ton of water work lately! Gilly is getting extremely good at creatively AVOIDING getting wet while still indicating on a.source in the water. It is pretty annoying lol! I will post more soon but I just wanted to stop.in and say hi!! We did some building work this past saturday. I am on an actual search tomorrow!

A couple picks from last .onth of Gilly at CFTE (the Center for Forensic Training and Education) down in Dayton OH. It was AMAZING! We learned so much in just a few short 10 hr days lol!

Agree! I think @Dasz88 needs to be sat down and forced to write a 3 page detailed report of all the things she & Gilly have been doing!

Hiiiii guys! Long time no see? I told myself I wouldn't post back here until we became nationally accredited. Welp, 2 years later with a couple of side forays, I can now say.... Gilly has officially passed the NSDA HRD land test and is a fully certified search and rescue dog!!
