Not gonna lie, it’s been very tough for me since I got her- not because of her in particular- she is a SAINT of a puppy. But because as a first time dog owner I am neck deep in the puppy blues, expierencing major regret and feeling very overwhelmed. Luckily there’s also good days, and she is a pleasure to be around almost all of the time.

Thank you Her Litter Name is Envy Me but her „real“ name is Trost. It’s German and basically means Solace/Consolation.

Yes, I am also already dreading the teen phase, I feel like she’s is very mellow for a Doberman at the moment, so I am curios (and scared lol) when she is gonna get intense.

Thank you for the suggestion, I’ve been looking around this forum a lot already and gotten a lot of useful tips so far and I do feel less alone when I read about that I am not the only one struggling or making mistakes

Little Update:

Look, who’s already out of her Cone!



Well, at least as long as she isn’t scratching lol.

I am surprised how well the laser worked that the vet used on her right ear just yesterday. The tip is already almost fully closed up again.

And after everybody’s suggestion to ditch the vet wrap, I unwrapped her left ear, which was still posted and I JUST checked yesterday(!) and behold, the tip was also starting to get bloody!

Luckily, that was before the vet appointment and the vet also used the laser on this ear tip to help it heal quick. I threw away my vet wrap the second I came home.

Trost is so happy to be out of the cone, I hope I don’t have to put it on her again and she’ll leave her ears (and another wound from her skin issues) alone.

Now I’d like to ask for suggestions. If I don’t have to put the cone on her again, and both tips are (almost) fully closed, do you think it will be safe to post her ears in the next 8 hours or tomorrow morning already if I leave the tip out?

I’m not too worried about the ears being out of the posts, because it’s only been 1 1/2 days for her right and like 2 hours for her left ear so far, so I‘d be fine waiting a bit longer to post her, rather than starting to early and maybe disturbing the healing process.

But since y’all are WAY more expierenced than me and my vet I’d listen to what y’all suggest!

I also wanted to thank everyone for the super helpful advice and kind words I’ve gotten, it really helped me feel better.

I’m a bit concerned because the right ear, where she had the flame removed, still looks black, but the vet checked it and used the laser, so I hope it’s from the laser not more dead tissue. But I think the vet would’ve told me if there was more necrotic tissue to remove.

If you can post without bandage material touching any of the injury, I think it would be fine. But healing is really important and any irritation is going to slow down healing, so be sure to get the posts really seated deep so she can't shake them out or want to scratch at them. You can try it and if posting starts causing problems with the tips healing, then just take them out and wait a couple more days. Puppies heal very fast.

I am going to check with my wound care specialist/surgeon. If I recall correctly, necrotic tissue with no evidence of infection will dry up and flake off fairly quickly. I see no infection (pus or gooish tissue) it looks very clean and precise.

Wow, you are so incredibly kind for checking that for me! Thank you so much, I really, really appreciate it! If it will just fall off IF its necrotic (I kinda hope its just from the laser/dried blood) that would really help me sleep and night, especially if I dont have to bring her to the vet a third time.

Thank you for the compliment on the name I got her from Ginga House Kennel. If i recall correctly i read on here that someone heard positive and negative stuff about this kennel, but I am very satisfied with everything. Its a showline breeder, which was what I was looking for. The health tests of both of Trosts parent were very current and the communication with the breeder was also great. Also, I feel like europe has a severe problem with hypertypes. It was surprisingly hard to find kennel that doesnt breed out of standard dogs, just to get them as big as possible.

Originally I was thinking about purchasing a puppy from unreachables kennel, which is well known in europe and was recommened to me. The communication was great, although some of their dogs (especially the males) are too big and seem out of standard to me. But what threw me off entirely was when I checked their newest litter and saw that the dam was DCM carrier, which was known and yet they still bred her. I dont think any ethical breeder would do that and that was just a absolute No-Go for me.

Now, if the blackish border grows beyond what it is now, then back to the vet you go. With the patients that I see, wound care doctors draw magic marker lines on fingers and toes to designate the border of demarcation- what’s old moving into the vascularized tissues. Not saying to mark your pups ears hahaha but you know where the borders are.

But really….unless it’s gooey, pus, and has a strong odor, I see no need to be overly concerned now. I would even massage the ears gently to facilitate blood flow. Of course, not like a deep massage to create too much blood flow pressure to bust the scabs (logic here).

Thank you! I will post them tomorrow and only use the baker rod and two pieces of zonas tape, leaving the tips out so i can monitor them and make sure I'll keep them clean.

Interesting! I only briefly read online that if one of the parents is a carrier than there’s a much higher chance that the offspring will get the illness and didn’t do further research tbh

I actually decided to post her ears right now, since they’re both clean and dry, no bleeding or anything and she’s super chill so that’s the best timing. I hope I did it correct, I made sure the post are in deep so she can’t shake them out and only super super lightly taped them, leaving the tips without tape and without the post touching them.

Would y’all say this is fine? And I should change them every 2 to 3 days, correct?

I really can’t tell very well but from the pict it looks as if the top strip of tape is too tight. I am sure you did this correctly because you are going to be super cautious…. but it appears to be binding into the hair- the bottom of the blue circle.

As compared to the bottom tape has some gap in it- middle of red circle.

You know, I really would take a really warm wet cloth and use it as a compress on her ears. Her ear tips still look pretty blackish/purple to me. And massage them gently.

I would prob put off posting today and maybe tomorrow and concentrate on the warm compress/massage trying to get some color as high up in the ears as I could.

The backerod placement looks great. Place a strip of tape around the ear just like that loosely and then squeeze the loose tape onto the ear.
