CAT & FCAT possible!

Well, I am surprised that Asha didn't just go all out to kill that lure! Thinking about it though, we do spend a great deal of time training our puppies to want to be right with us, especially out in public. And this training is tripled up if our pups tend to be independent minded!

It didn't surprise me that she was pretty cruisy with travelling and motel stays though. When Jazz was thrown in at the deep end and I thought I'd have a dog who barked at everything all night, she was happy to stay rolled up in her bedding, even when she had to be outside the door because of no pet laws! Be aware that that would change if you stayed a few days and the room became her own! 😆

Will you have another try at it or is it all too difficult to arrange near where you live?

The next one that's less than a half days drive will be in the fall, 6 or 7 months from now. Hard to practice or train because there are no sighthound clubs with that lure machine. But because Reckless is so keen on this game, when one comes up we'll probably just go along & try it again. I've known just about from the beginning that Ashas defense is super sharp and her prey drive is good but not what motivates her. This sport sings to me because it gives a dog freedom to run hard & fast and chase something - most dogs love it, even if they are slow and just loping along. If Asha doesn't love it the next time it comes up, then I won't do it a 3rd time. It's all about having fun! Hopefully going to try the SchH club thing soon & see how that works out.

Yeah, there were some dogs that quit running and ran off all over the field. So it wasn't like she was the only one! At least she came right to me. Have you checked for events near you? If you haven't already, go to AKC Event Search. There aren't any near me either, this one was a 4 hour drive & two hotel nights, and we did have a great time and Asha learned a lot & I learned even more about what I didn't know that I didn't know.

so I looked to see if any are coming up and glad I did cause they are only doing it next month for a weekend somewhat close to me and I’m very excited about this..I am going to go and check it out when it comes but not to sure if I will put the dogs in it yet.. I want to contact the club and talk to them first and get some info

You should go, just to watch if nothing else. Take the dogs if you can, just to let them hear & see the action. If you can actually talk to someone ask if they do puppy runs/ or beginner runs - dogs who haven't ever run a lure or if it's OK to just come watch and bring dogs to acclimate. The trial I went to was pretty busy & doing all they could to just get the paid entries through their runs, but it would have been super helpful for Asha.

UPDATE on results! Turns out Asha's first run was over 35 seconds (because circling around and looking for me) but because she DID actually run from one end to the other it is in the books at a whopping 5 mph! Gotta laugh! But the 2nd run made me pretty happy: she was looking left & right for me but cruising to the other end where she found me & when she did see/hear me she turned it on and did made the course in less than 10 seconds at over 21 mph! Now I'm back to being excited to see how fast she could be if she ran full out for the whole time. Here's results, photos to follow.

Love the last photo the most and the story to go with it! Never knew her registered name, her call name makes perfect sense with it! 😁

Regarding her name: Breeder named all the puppies and the name "Yara" was awkward to me for a call name (felt like a mouthful of marbles!). I found out that the TV series Yara was actually Asha in the original book and that's how I came up with it!

Wow, Look at Java go!!!

Those photo's are great! Gosh she is a good looking dog!

And... I'm sorry... there was a LAB there running just under 30 MPH??????? Giving the whippets a run for their money!
Awe, thanks! .... That was a running machine kinda Lab! That conversation we had earlier, about working Labs, just a different dog entirely.

All the photos are listed by call name & breed by the photographer on https://photos.chaverimbasenjis.com. You have to enter your email to look, but I don't think they send spam or anything. @Oh Little Oji there was a nice looking brindle Cane Corso there, ran like the blazes, if you look you'll see his photos. It IS fun to see all the different breeds!

Yep! I'm a fan of the series so it's very clever! They named her Yara in the TV series because they felt viewers would get confused with another important character's name, Osha. I like the name Asha more too.

Wow, love those pics! She is a really beautiful dog and it is actually a bit pleasing that she is so keyed in to you, knowing how independent she is by nature. I wonder if she realises that you are allowing her to chase that lure? She might be unsure whether she is free to chase it down. Only a thought.

The photographer better look out. Asha is keeping her eye on him 😂
I was right behind him. ;) I think you pulled this from the first run pictures, she was scanning everyone every where. You are allowed to call, so I was since she wasn't looking at the lure anyway so she was looking toward the call & whistle, but this photo was def looking right at the camera.

Aww I actually like all the pics of her looking for you
I do too. Had to buy them to make her story complete. It still didn't catch all her emotions, she knew I was somewhere out there!

No, she just didn't care about it at all. I had to go outside the field and run down outside the fence, so all she saw was me leaving out a gate. My friend that held her said she was just eyes on the gate where I left, didn't care about anything else. It was madness like she'd never seen & she was getting really clingy while waiting in line - all the barking dogs, and people. And then I left? "What fresh hell is this?" I can hear her now! ... I feel bad for her that first round, but then she got it the second time - she was pretty sure she knew where I'd be, and she was right. But the independent part? I thought she'd be delighted, but learned (just this weekend!) that independence means only on HER terms. She can leave me and feel quite good about it. Me leave her? Nope, nope, nope. Quiet feed stores and classes with pups on leashes in the park just didn't prepare her for this. I feel really bad that she didn't get the exposure I'd planned for her as a puppy, but I'm pretty sure she'll learn from this, that I will always be there for her in the end.

Here's sitting under the trees watching other dogs run the lure. At my feet, not a care in the world, and her safe haven in the car, totally chill.

You guys, I'm so proud of Asha this weekend! We traveled up to Santa Fe to do Fast CATs - 2 runs on Sat and 2 runs on Sunday. Results:
Saturday run #1 - 24.29 mph
Saturday run #2 - 25.13 mph
Sunday run #1 - 25.22 mph
Sunday run #2 - 25.07 mph

Enough mph's I got my BCAT title! (takes 150, I already had over 75) Yea!!!

Again, no photographer BUT there was a young gal there practicing with her fancy camera and I asked her if she would take pictures of Asha, I was happy to pay - it was last minute, my release crew was already taking Asha to the start and I was headed for the catch area. Anyway, she showed me what she got on the camera screen afterward and I was so happy! She's in school and can't send them until Wednesday, wouldn't give me a price, so I just gave her what I'd pay a pro for a couple of photos - I don't know how many I'll get, I'm just happy to have one! I'll post whatever comes out good here when I get them. She was sooo nice to do that for us.

And of course Reckless did great - one run over 26 mph and the other 3 runs were over 27 mph. We made friends with some Whippet folks so I had a great handler for Asha - she's gotten too strong for my friend to handle going to the start.

Pics of her running will have to wait, but here's a peek at the end result: Asha & Reckless passed out at the motel.

You might have started a young person on a career path with their first commission!
I hope so! Gah, she might have been 19 or 26 - anyone younger than 40 looks like high school age to me now. But she was enthusiastic and I hope she continues her path with photography. And so nice and wanting to please and trying not take $ for a favor.

She figured out the game then I take it?!
She DID! When the lure whipped back down to the start line and we were in the inspection place, she did her Big Girl Bark - just like lunging and barking at a decoy - as it went by.
