American VS European Doberman

My favorite. I always say mix the 2 and you have the perfect doberman. My boy that I posted pics of above is a mix, guess that's why I like his look so much. He is a nice blend and has most of the things I like NA bred and EU and not many of things I don't like about either.

I have more than one person (including judges) tell me that the doberman competition is the toughest. I'm leaning toward the reason being there are so many different types. Must depend on what type the judge likes.

AKC Conformation for Dobermans is not for the faint hearted. It is very political and cut throat. Dobermans are a very competitive breed. They are very showy and there is no hiding behind fluffy coats...what you see is what you have. They have been known to gather much attention in the ring due to their beauty. As far as the judging aspect of the breed, it is difficult because the judge is supposed to pick what dog best fits breed standard (aka has the most type) It's nothing more than an opinion and interpretation. I have seen a dog be put up for winners that only had a lovely head going for him (judge like heads). Some judges will grade for movement only, or topline. Like breeders, even judges have their favorite "style". To pay an entry fee in the conformation ring is nothing more than paying someone to share their opinion. Showing a Doberman in tougher than most breeds because they require a higher number of entries to accumulate points

A wet mouth means they don't have a tight flew. Dobermans should have a dry mouth.

Well, of course I had to google "flew" as it pertains to canine anatomy, but yeah, now that makes sense!
I'll go ahead and opt out of this conversation now, since I obviously need to go back to canine pre-school...I'll print out a dog's silhouette, and then color/label different parts!....Maybe I'll be back in a year with a clue!

It was not nearly as political in the early 70's as it is now. I had a handler for Rocky in show. Now I would not attempt it myself in AKC ring.
It has always seemed that the judges prefer certain experienced (professional)
handlers (of their liking) and those tend to do better than owner handlers with much less experience.
It gets overwhelming in the ring trying to figure things out, so much so that I would not attempt AKC. My hat is off to those that do.

Yeah, I've heard something similar to what you said from several people. I guess that explains why I have never really been biten by the show bug. For starters I am not a real competitive person by nature. It has never really mattered to me what other people think and I certainly don't like some if the nastiness that can with competition. Seems like there is at least one person that just has to be nasty about it.
If and when I get in the ring, it's about me and my dog doing something together. I don't really care what the judge has to say. I know what I have in the other end of the leash and I am more than happy with it.
I do like to go to a dog show and watch. For me it's about the teamwork. Watching a team work together is really a highlight for me. I do prefer to see owners get out there with their dogs for the same reason...teamwork. I enjoy watching the pride you see when dog a owner work together.

You have hit the nail on the head...Americans love to have a Labrador in a Doberman suit...:lmao:
If the dog is too active or barking at the neighbors dog...neuter him..that will calm him down.. :lmao:
no disrespect to anyone but, majority of the people i come across on these forums cannot handle a Euro dobe.

I'm about to be a proud mommy of a Euro Dobe. :) I decided to go with him because I want the stronger temperament and thicker dog. I love pits and danes, so I'm getting the best of all worlds with my boy Heathcliff. :) I also agree that allot of people I come across don't like their dogs to bark... They're dogs guys! That's what they do. If you don't like the barking get a cat. Or a ferret. Lmao. Or a quiet passive breed. Dobe barks are awesome. Just sayin. Xoxo to my new Dobe community.

Congratulations on your new addition.

While I agree that dogs bark and it's what they do because they are dogs is not a sufficient reason to allow your dog to bark incessantly at nothing.

Where we live there are barking dog laws. Any dog barking continuously for more than 15min repeatedly will get you a stiff fine from Code Enforcement. After several fines and citations, if your dog continues to bark you could have your dog removed from your home.

It is like a child throwing temper tantrums and screaming all the time. You teach your child that this is unacceptable behavior and it's the same with dogs. Manners and respect is what we must teach our pets in order to coexist in our society.

Post up some pictures when your puppy comes home. We love lots of puppy love photos! :-)

Welcome! Excited to hear you're getting a Euro! We look forward to getting to know him/her and you!

Me? I've got a full-Euro working-line Dobe and believe that, yes, barking is an important part of life with a Dobe but I control it as absolutely closely as I can. Sometimes he is free to peel the paint off the houses next door; sometimes I absolutely need him to be silent.

Welcome. If you haven't yet, please head over to the introduction thread and tell us a little about yourself.

It pisses me off that people lump NA bred Dobes into the catagory of having a " Golden tempermeant". That's a pretty broad generalization imho and not one that is entirely fair. Although I agree that it does happen, it seems that all NA bred are being judged for the ones that are. I can personally say that my Dobermans are not Goldens in Doberman clothing and it's honestly insulting to know they have been presumed to be that way. I'm not the only one in my shoes and I'm very proud of the workability, tempermeant and versatility of my dogs and feel all NA Dobermans should be bred to be the same caliber of dog. The problem we run into here in the US is that people want a Doberman for looks etc, but can't handle the tempermeant or energy level of one of correct breeding/tempermeant. There needs to be more education on the breed and we as advocates along with reputable breeders need to work together to accomplish this.

Sorry for my abruptness. It is not often I share my feelings in this manner, but this is something I am passionate about as I am so tired of hearing my NA bred Dobes are "inferior" to their EU bred counterparts. It's just not true

Nero definitely does not have a "Golden" temperament. While he is more than excited to see us, he was reserved with meeting my mom the first time and with my daughter after not seeing her for several months.

Wow!! Umm yea 15 minutes is ridiculous. Barking for alert, or randomness is fine with me but that kinda of excess is just rude. I agree with you entirely!! I can't wait I'm super excited. My little man well be a very well trained gentleman and a good watchdog. I'm gonna be a mommy!!!! Yaaaaaay! :D

This topic really comes down to looks, temperament can vary so much even in the same litter of pups. Then it can change as the dog grows depending on how it is raised and trained. I have seen plenty of NA and EU dogs work and worked many myself. There are some badass working dogs on both sides, there is also some big cupcakes on both sides as well. Most people looking for a Doberman are looking for a pet and don't want the drives that a true working dog will display. So I say pick your Doberman by the look you want and research the breeder and there dogs. Saying I want a euro because of there temperament is a ridiculous statement. If you really want a dog that will protect you, you can find a breeder that will help you get the right puppy to work with but that will exclude almost all of the show breeders.

Looks like a combination perhaps. Both NA and Euro are great dogs and a blend is awesome. :-)
