American VS European Doberman

I meant to say they are more homogenious in terms of the characteristics we mentioned, not heterogeneous,... Sorry

Juls that is a myth. Both lines have the exact same health issues because they came from exactly the same stock in the beginning. Working lines die the same as show lines.
Yes but it seems to be an increase lately in the deads of euro dogs coming from show lines, but I don't know it seems they have big troubles too, nobody is exempt.

nobody is exempt.

So true - we can shout all we want but the fact is our dogs die of a variety of different things at different times and for different reasons. It has only been the past 20 years and especially the past 10 that we became more conscious (or maybe overly conscious) of reasons for death, in our dogs so what info we have is spread out all over, sketchy at best, a lot is rumor or grapevine and much is AR driven.

They use it as a tool to slam purebred dogs everywhere and they are succeeding because we buy into their hype. Fact is a dog is not going to regularly exceed it's normal lifetime and for larger dogs the time line is less than the smaller dogs. WHY??? That is what we should be researching along with anything else. Everything we learn about our dogs helps us understand the problems in humans. But we have not eliminated on single major health issue for man or beast. BUT it is a wonderful learning tool in hopes someday we can actually make a difference.

I am not sure what type of dogs we breed in South Africa but they seem to be somewhere in between the two. I guess it depends on the kennels you buy from here.

They are split as every where seems to be split into - show and working lines If nothing that fact alone should prove to everyone that if you only breed for one thing you loose others. Balance

That could prove a very interesting story to research, where the lines of the S.African dogs came from, what kind of time line in history, etc.

Great thread! I enjoy looking at the difference btwn American and Euro Dobies, although I think my female American has some Euro qualities, but most of what I have read matches exactly (sensitive to correction, likes to couch next to you, etc.)

You have hit the nail on the head...Americans love to have a Labrador in a Doberman suit...:lmao:
If the dog is too active or barking at the neighbors dog...neuter him..that will calm him down.. :lmao:
no disrespect to anyone but, majority of the people i come across on these forums cannot handle a Euro dobe.
I have a European Dobe.He is amazing...yes, he was a handful as a small pup, and still a handful. He is stubborn, sweet and goofy. Not the kind to back down at anything. You have to be the boss..he is big at the same time..110 lbs.

Next to my Buster? American. But laying down its hard to tell. This is Buster.
[DOUBLEPOST=1424038476,1424038168][/DOUBLEPOST]Buster has scars on his handsome face..from his mother.

Kashi, looking at the dogs Donne Lucas of Port Elizabeth who trades under the name Donnehaus Dobermans, and who is also a working judge at KUSA, her dogs are the typical European Dobermans .... in fact a couple of her dogs are being shown and worked in Russia ..... Even the late Kobus Anderson of Pretoria had the East European Dobies ..... By the way, I'm an Ex-South African living in the US and I too have Euro Dobies.

I am a fan of the Euro's which is why we did months of research on the bloodlines we wanted from "Across the Pond" and we ended up with full Russian bloodlines out of a very well established and previously un-imported to the USA line...
I did like the Ukrainian, Serbian dogs, Italian dogs and some Croatian lines as well. We ended up with a classic heavy boned, square, blocky headed 'doggy bitch' which I could not be MORE thrilled with. She has the drive of a machine, she loves to work, plays hard, couch potatoe's hard, sucks on toys to fall asleep, velcro's herself to my or my husbands thigh, is a social butterfly and has won in the show ring in Conformation and has it all...
She will never make the cut in "AKC" because of the great photos shown above of the difference between European and N.A. standards! she is russian tank at 26" tall and 89.8 lbs... at nigh unto 12 months in 4 days...
she is thick, wide, heavy and super muscular but she has meat on her bones covering the bones, so skeletal parts do not show... no ribs, no shoulder bones, and yet, she moves with grace and elegance like you see in her thumbnail photo here...
but this shot of her from the rear shows a TANK.... in motion! View attachment 598 View attachment 599 View attachment 600
She looks just like my Buster..except he is 31 inches, at last weigh in 110 lbs at 11 months, is a dark Mahogany with darker rust markings...he is muscular , not so refined as other Dobies. He will be a year old later this month. He has a easy way of moving..like a horse trotting. What a great and gorgeous animal he is.

@CathyNu my dog is not from Donne, did not have the money to buy one of her dogs and prefer to rescue when I can. She breeds fantastic dogs and always cleans up at the Dobermann breed shows here. My Layla is from Polokwane and was rescued as a 8 week old pup. I have no idea what her lines are. I really wish I did know. Her mom has cropped ears which is not something that is done in these parts so very strange.

Thats awesome to meet a fellow South african! I am currently living in Namibia but i am from Joburg.

Pretty interesting thread.

I have owned an American B&T, and now a Red. As a boy in the 80s, and 90s my grandmother had 4 Dobes. Looking back I would say 2 where American, and 2 were EU.
I have been digging threw family photo albums. I know there are pictures of them. If I can find them, I will share them with the forums.

For me personally.... I have always like Dobes, because to me they are a great middle of the road dog. One of the best well rounded, and constant in terms of size, and temperament. I have seen this in US, and EU Dobes.
I can think of better workers then Dobes, I can also think of better pets then Dobes. But, I cant think of many that can do both as well as Dobes.

Even the most driven US/EU Dobes I have been around, do not compare to the most driven of Mals, GSD, American Bulldogs, AMStaff, Dutch Shepherds I have been around. But, I feel the most driven of thous dog breeds I have been around lack the pet relationship quality, and home life stability you can get with a Dobe.
So I feel while a Dobe masters neither, they excel at them both very well. Making Dobes to me the perfect larger bred, working dog.

Just my opinions, based off my experiences being around Dobes. Other opinions will very. I am not presenting anything as fact.

Hey guys I have a half European bred doberman and he seems to be a lot more "bulkier" than my friends or others I see and he's only 8 months... Is that normal?

He doesn't look all that bulky to me in that pic. Looks good though. Do you know his weight and height? I'm curious. I've got a similar Dobe at a similar age. Mine is lighter in weight than most that I read about here. Mine's head seems smaller than I'd like, which I'm sure contributes to his being a little bit light. I don't have a recent side pic, but I can upload this:

Actually his head looks good-sized in this pic. He is 61.5 lbs., and I haven't measured his height recently, but is probably 25-26 in. About 8.5 months. He is an American-bred Euro-line. Don't be fooled by those big, cute eyes and the bow tie :)

Wow what a cute and beautiful Dobie you have! Mine is 8 1/2 months old, 81 pounds and 27 inches but might be more now that was a month ago (the chest measurement)

Here are some better photos he's really getting HUGE!

Oh, okay. I can see in these pics that he is pretty big! Man, what a difference in weight between our pups!

Yeah I know I hope I'm not over feeding him or something! His dad was 105 pounds.

May I ask what you feed your pup and how many servings/size per day?

Here's a pic of him at 4 months then 7! image.webp
