It's a Dobie thing!

LOL, where do we begin.

Albert does the slapping feet and a loud grunt when he lays down to get comfy.

They nose poke, especially in the butt.

They must come to the bathroom with you.

They're always watching you and what you're doing.

They're talkers when they play with each other. Not barking, but making their own Doberman language.

They'll melt in the rain.
Oh My Gosh!
We dare not turn our backs on Buster..specially if he has a squeaky toy, he gooses us with it. That paw smack and the flop on the ground with the grunt...he has to come into the bathroom..and we have to send him and his pal Amina out side or we can not hear our selves for Buster talking..
he licks on the leather love seat now and then..I have tried to find out what it is..but its always between the seats and there is nothing there.
He has to be able to see outside...

I thought that was just my quirky dog!

He loves to play catch and keep away and tug of war. Loves water..except for the rain and his bath. He will cannonball into the pond but hates that nice warm water in the bath.

Loves the car..tries to get into the UPS truck loves riding.
Buster uses his paws like hands..craziest thing I have ever seen.
He is so funny, such a joker.
We have two chihuahuas and a cat..the cat has been friendlier to him then those two chihuahuas. He takes them \treats, tries to get them to play with his toys..even lets them chew on his bones..but they are just mean to him. But he does not hurt them when he certainly could. Are all Dobes so sweet natured?

I didn't know the paw slap on a "down" command was a Doberman thing. Hans did it that way from the day he learned "down" (which was the first day I trained him) and does it that way to this day unless he is on rocks and it would hurt.

I love the way mine crossed his paws... and how goofy he gets when he's happy! He loves his toys, and spread them all over the house. Sick of picking after him, now in the morning, we take a few minutes for obedience training as we play "go get your toys"! For a treat, he looks around and bring one up and drop it in a designated box! He makes me laugh so much! Dobies are real comedians! But one noise at the door and it's serious business. So awesome!

In general yes :) they're all like this to a certain degree. Its kinda the secret of the Doberman world that hasn't gotten out yet to the general public.

NA Dobermans are very friendly because in the 70's and 80's show breeders specifically focused on lowering the aggression level and upping the more family friendly charactics.

I agree overall. Here, however, my mind grapples with the topic of different "types" of Dobermans. I hear a lot of talk of NA (North American) vs. European, and that is as it should be. I don't, however, hear much talk of conformation (show) vs. working.

I'm trying to understand how all four of those types interplay. For example, what is a European conformation Dobe like? Does it have some of the working abilities that (it seems to me) were stripped from the NA Dobe even though it's a Euro conformation Dobe, not a working Dobe?

I know it's common to find Euro ancestry in working Dobermans bred here in the states, but I do know there is a decent-sized contingent of folks breeding working Dobermans in this country. They compete in Schutzhund and IPO, and are in my opinion, resurrecting much of what the Doberman was intended to be.

I've had two working Dobes so far (well, this current one is still a pup) and I can tell you they're different from conformation Dobes. I can happily say though that they do have their clownish, fun-loving and, yes, sweet-natured side which accompanies the slew of other sides that Dobermans tend to have. I love that about all Dobermans, by the way โ€“ how multi-faceted they are!

The working Dobe just has higher drives and lacks some of those qualities that makes a dog easy and relaxing to be around โ€“ you know those things that make people love them when the meet them, and rave about how good a dog they are.

So, to me, working Dobermans are not nearly as good at being pets. I'm certainly not suggesting they're dangerous even though they do require an especially experienced, determined owner. I'm suggesting they are more of a royal pain in terms of everyday life. At the same time, there is nothing like the feeling I get observing their drives when they're directed in a non-problematic way. It's a thing of beauty.

Oh Della is a big paw crosser too.
River, too

I know this is not really a Dobie thing. I've known two people with GSD pups that used to do it. I didn't think it was worth starting a thread over, but: and this applies to male dogs:

Peeing on the front paws/legs!! Sheesh! Knock it off!!! We're going on 8 months old now and he's still prone to doing it depending on his stance. He has lifted his hind leg as far back as maybe a couple months ago, and will do it every once in a while. More often, though, he will lift a front paw when peeing, usually after he realizes he's peeing on it โ€“ if he realizes.

How frustrating when you're trying everything you can to send the message to the pup that pee, and its odor does not belong in the house.

I wonder if if he was around other male dogs he'd have picked up proper technique by now.

Neither of my previous two Dobermans had this problem.

Can I add to the butt poke is the sack tap as my hubby calls it.
:spit:Sack Tap! :spit:

I've never had a dog thought would 'goose' you ...front or behind. Mainly they go for the hand for a pet.

Hopefully he'll grow out of that. I know with horses they do NOT like to pee themselves and my boy will really spread to avoid hitting his legs! LOL And I swear they know which direction to be in according to the wind!

I recently read on facebook someone if anyone's Dobermans gave them wet willys. As in in the ear. I thought: Yes. That happened every once in a while with my last Dobe. With the current pup, I get it a lot! I chalk this up to the fact that he is not comfortable with face-to-face close-up affection. When I try to give him some he tends to move to the side and moisturize my ears.

Another thing: They have to inspect whatever you are carrying in your hands when you enter a room. It's like: No, thank you, I did not want your nose juice on this item I am carrying.

Archer does the sitting on couch, front legs on floor. Aria and Faith sit on the couch sideways towards the armrest and dangle their legs over the side of the armrest. The girls also stand on the couch cushions and hang over the top of the couch facing backwards (our couch is open to the back of the living room.

Aria suckles on our arms, blanket and flank sucks.

All three inspect everything.

Faith is well known for her wet-willies. She loves licking ears..both dog and human

All three Dobermans give what we call "wet kisses". They drink water and then come over with their dribbling mouths and lick us. Totally disgusting.

They all bring toys to us to either drop in our laps (chest if we're laying down), or to have us hold when they chew them or to just chew on as they lay their head in our laps.

Oh yes โ€“ the water thing. Our last Dobe would usually come toward us (after making a big water mess on the floor of course) and just give a quick touch to our body after drinking. I chalked it up to him wanting to reestablish a scent connection, or at least a connection, with us after having his nose in the water.
