Dpca Rescue

Part of what I do most these days is rescue work. Fostering/networking/working with rescues/setting up transports. Im going to post a lot of a resources specific to your area if you run into the situation where you need a rescue to step in. Too many times dogs are dumped on reputable breeders, and we have to fix the problem. Not often is there an outlet for this.

In order to maintain a successful breed, at the bottom we need to care for our rescues. The poor poorly bred babies that neither owner, nor breeder will take back. Its the unfortunate side effect of "ruling" the doberman world so to speak. We need to pick up the slack, because no one is going to do it for us. This breed counts on us to take care of them, and as the reputable breeders of our breed the bill stops at us.
Thankfully the DPCA in the US is very active in rescue, and we keep Dobermans out of shelters and in rescue. Believe it or not, it is very rare for a doberman to be PTS in a pound type environment. They are usually pulled very quickly.

Thankfully breed specific rescue is relatively normal in our breed. I have had the pleasure of working closely with lots of rescue presidents/board members/transport directors, and the general theme is that most all of them support reputable breeding practices.

This list will be US specific, but I would be happy to assist those over the pond who need a rescue.
To start off this is a facebook group title "Doberman Pinscher Rescue Listings" I personally run this page with a few other admins. This is a last resort. When rescues are full, people advertise rescues on this page, and we have many good homes searching through the posts.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/DPRescueUSA/

Quite a few of our members have found their forever babies through this outlet. While it is not fullproof as far as home checks go, we do our best.

DPCA Approved Doberman Rescue's by State. For any rescue not listed they are either not approved by the DPCA, and/or are pending approval from the DPCA. With that being said without DPCA approval I would recommend visiting other outlets first.

Thank you CRD for posting.

This is they kind of thing I think of when I hear the term "Responsible Breeder".

The more breeders get involved with adoption/rescue groups the better it is for everyone.

Thank you for this, Matt and for all you do for our furry friends as well.

You are right, it is our responsibility as breed representatives to help those who don't have a stable home. The breeders can't do everything and I feel shelters are not the safest place for Dobermans.

I sent you a pm, as well as deleting comments from the two of us that do not pertain to choosing a DPCA approved rescue.

I checked out the dpca website. I guess I don't understand why a rescue has to dpca approved. CRD could you explain why that is important?

While they dont "have" to be approved, it tells us that they follow the DPCA code of ethics and are recommended by the DPCA. Which in my eyes is quite a lot.

Just like the DPCA has a breeder referral list, this is quite similar. It may not be foolproof or include everyone, but is an excellent list to give to people looking for a good rescue.

I have to ask why non-dpca rescues are not on the list, or if they are pending. People can choose whatever rescue they want, but I dont think there is enough room in this forum to explain what to watch out for. Because unfortunately these days there are good and bad rescues, just like good and bad breeders.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought you were saying only adopt from a rescue approved by DPCA. That didn't make ant sense to me because they really don't have any involvement with the rescues other than having them sign a piece of paper.

No problem at all, but I Do want to clarify this part as it's not true.

The DPCA does quite a bit for rescues actually. A substantial amount of money is allocated into DPCA rescues, they run an email list for rescues to coordinate, set up booths at shows, promote fundraisers, organize rescue for puppy mill type operations, dedicate a big section to rescue at nationals, they set up the nationals rescue parade (which I hope to participate in this year) among many more things. they are surprisingly involved in rescue activities, as I think they also understand the need for good breed specific rescues.
They even have a website section specifically designed for DPCA approved rescues. http://www.dpca.org/rescue/

The co-founder of KCDR is the current rescue chair for the DPCA and he does a heck of a job.
