American VS European Doberman

I think you are mistaken. European Dobermans appear larger because of the heavier bone and weight set. Besides, larger is not better. With larger size comes health complications. You want a dog that is of proper height and weight.

oh wow so larger has more health problems then wow i didn't know that

Post some pics!!

Girl, you have much to learn.Sorry if that comes off as a bit smart ass,but true. You are however at a great site to learn about the breed.

Larger they become less agile as well.Part of the Doberman is their speed, larger slows them down.

Wan't a German dog with black and rust but want large? Get a Rottie.:)
yeah but i'll tell you why i love american dobermans i just think because of the colors, ears, sizes that is why the european doberman might actually be more better, but i like both i guess

Like I said, sorry. It's a bad trait of mine.Stick around anyways though, the site is full of info, and some members here are pro trainers,or breeders. Some of them have been breeding one breed, ours, for decades.

That is why Dobermans deemed as "giant" "large" "king" or "warlock" are discussed in bad terms by those that know and truly love the breed. Not only does the larger size go against the standard set forth by the parent breed club but the larger a dog gets the more strain on his joints, tendons, muscles, bones, heart, etc. As Gelcoater said the larger they get the harder time they have moving as they should and performing the job they were originally created for. The standard is set as it is because that is the size, look, and temperament that is ideal for the breed. When you deviate too far from that standard you run into problems.

Please please please do not support pet stores like ones found in malls. The "purebred" dogs they have there come from puppy mills. By supporting them you are supporting those that run puppy mills and the terrible conditions in which they breed. If you want a puppy do your research on the breed you are interested in and if you find they will be a good fit for your lifestyel find a responsible breeder that breeds for health, conformation, temperament, and for the betterment of the breed.

Please, love the breed but love and support the right ones. Why would you want to support a breeder who produces a dog that will break down at an early age and possibly even die young? How is that fair to the dogs or to those that love them and will have to part with them far too soon? I hope that you will browse around the forums and use this chance to educate yourself on all aspects of the breed.

So you are ready to commit to the life of a dog for 10 years, but you are not willing to drive four hours?

Since I find this super shady I am going to ask some questions first.

1. How old are you?
2. Do you have an adequate house with a backyard to support a large breed.
3. What do you expect from a Doberman?
4. How much time will he be left in a kennel?

You have already been provided with information on bad breeders. I don't find having to spend 80 bucks on gas an adequate excuse.

Please for the love of god research the breed before you purchase one. Hang around here as there is plenty of good info on the site that is truly eye opening.

There is so much more I want to say but I feel confident that others will continue on with this.

On a side note, why am I always late to these threads.

Please do not buy from a pet store - the dogs are not socialized, properly bred or worked with so it is like buying a pig in the poke. You have not back up support if problems arise.

Please vist the DPCA breeder referral section at DPCA.org for a list of breeders in your area. They are out there and you will save much heartache by finding a reputable breeder - it makes a world of difference in how the dog will turn out look wise also. United Doberman club also has a small list of working breeders but if you like the NA look then the DPCA breeders will better suit your taste.

There are many good breeders in IL and MI and there are a few in Northern Indiana. Please refer to the DPCA list D4E pointed you to(those breeders are listed on there), and that I've recommended you check out before. Often times breeders will be willing to ship their puppies or are willing to meet you half way but 4 hours really isn't anything for a one time thing.

For what it's worth, one of my best friends drove from the Denver area to New Mexico for the "right" dog.I believe that was about 11-1200 miles? One way.
