That surprises me because they are usually very tall. I would think you'd want a shorter horse to play polo. Quarter horse would be a good one. Maybe they get a longer mallet if they're on a taller horse!

While many TBs are taller, there are some that are on the shorter side. I had a filly that was maybe 15h and went on to become a polo pony. My boy now is 15.1-15.2 but no bigger. His previous pasture mate was supposedly a TB and he was shorter than mine, maybe even under 15h.

Every night this week I've been hosing horses off before they go in for the night. It's so stinking hot! They're sweating just standing there. Of course so am I! But I get to go in the air conditioning. They get a little hose off and they love it! And they go in their stall for food and a nice fan!

Cheyenne is a the model tonight.


Even Annie has a fan. At least until she goes inside.

My poor guy has become afflicted with anhidrosis so I am hosing him off daily as well. He sometimes doesn’t sweat at all or not enough. I’ve started him on a supplement and have began trying to find an acupuncturist that will travel to me as I’ve heard great things about it for anhidrosis treatment. Imagine baking in 100+ degree weather and not being able to sweat!

If you didn't know that this is a 9 yr old riding a 13.2 hh pony, you'd think this was an adult jumping 5' fences. This little girl in Czechia is incredibly talented and wins just about every competition she enters. Her jumping position is so beautiful, natural, and mature, better than many adult riders.

So after 23 years of horse ownership, we finally decided to put in outlets for heated buckets in the winter! You might wonder how we did without it all these years! But it really wasn't bad. I had two sets of water buckets and we also have a heated water room. The horses learn to drink the water before it freezes and on most days it didn't even freeze. I would then take the buckets into the water room to thaw and fill up the second set. I'd leave them in there so they were room temperature when I put them out at night. Or wait till we were feeding at night and filled up with warm water since we had hot water in the water room. And by evening, the other ones were thawed enough to dump the chunk of ice out and get it ready for the next day. It worked out fine. I didn't have a problem with it. And sometimes it's just what you don't have, you don't miss! LOL

But then last year when Sandy went through her choke episode, we bought a heated bucket to see if we can make her some warm Mash. It didn't work out that well since they don't really get hot and don't heat up fast. They just keep the water from freezing. So we ended up using it as a water bucket for her since she had to be on stall rest for a week. During that week I realized how nice it was to not have a frozen bucket. Especially when they are inside the whole time and there wasn't a lot of time for it to thaw before I needed it again. So my husband said that he would design the outlets for us this year. And Saturday he decided to start on it!

Tying them all into the source meant going up above the water room. And that ceiling was absolutely filthy! Can't remember the last time we cleaned up there. Hubby stayed up there while I handed up a clean bucket of water and he handed down the dirty one. We must have done that 20 times!

So the one single switch that was the light...


...turned into two! A light switch and a switch to turn on the outlets!


And the added bonus was that while the heated buckets can be plugged in in the winter, the fans can be plugged in in the summer! We measured everything for the buckets and weren't sure if we might not need a short extension cord for the fans. But it worked out perfect!

I had a better picture somewhere showing all three fans with the extension cords across the aisle but I can't find it. This is about what it looked like. So I'm so excited to have the outlets now. It'll be much easier and cleaner looking.

This all comes in handy as we keep getting older.

Ah yes, for years our barn did not have electricity at all. I had a 2 burner propane cook top, got it from Cabela's, and a huge canning pot, or 2. I'd heat up water and dump it into the horses water troughs that were in their stalls. 5 horses, I'd do it in the morning, then again in the evening, seemed like I was CONSTANTLY heating up water on those days. Haven't had that bad of a winter for a LONG time. Got electricity, finally, in the barn, and bought 6 heated buckets, work great.

You're going to love it and so are the horses! We could never be without a heated water source here with our cold winters. I know some people around here expect them to get their water from eating snow but I don't think they realize just how dangerous that is.

Well, for the water trough in the corral, we went years before putting in a de-icer too. I would bring warm water out in buckets a few times a day. Then one day hubby piped an outlet out there too. What a blessing that was! Hey, when you're younger, everything seems easy! But my motto was always, Make My Life Easier!!

The first hay rack!

Just hubby and I. We can usually get the first rack done by ourselves. Thank goodness it was a cool day today. That's why we chose today! My friend's husband was holding it for us in his barn so we can wait till we pass the 95° weather.

I get on the hay rack and hand it down to him. When it gets a little higher we set up this board to slide it across. But it still was a lot of work! For us old timers especially! ( well okay. Just me! LOL hubby is really pretty strong for his age! )




I thought the rack had 100 bales on it but it turned out there was 132! We had 14 bales that wouldn't fit here, so they went in the fourth stall where we store more hay.


Took us 2 hours. I'm going to be feeling this tomorrow, let me tell ya!

After stacking all the hay last night it was way past dinner time and we were starving. So we went in and ate and then came right out to let the horses in since it was getting late. As I'm getting their food ready, I look out and the horses are all running around and looking toward the back of the property. I don't know what they were seeing but something spooked them. Especially Cheyenne.

I no longer stack my own hay. There is a guy in Arboles, about 2 hrs from us, who sells beautiful hay and will deliver and stack for an extra fee. Completely worth it. There are a lot of people around here who buy his hay and know his name, so it's easy enough to get an order in for when he will be down our way.

But I've been boarding so much lately that I still have 80 bales from last year, way more than I need. I'll get my mare probably this afternoon from the people nearby who have been kind enough to board her for me for the last month while my husband was in the hospital, and my gelding will be with a trainer until next May at least. My girl will go back to the trainer's for winter boarding, which is really common here. Many people board during the winters b/c we have a nice banana belt of sorts south of here.
