What do you get 'tired of hearing' when walking your Dobie???

DobermanGuy

Novitiate
I hear the same three comments most of the time.

About 1/2 the time people will just say, "Wow, Those are some good looking dogs"

The rest of the time I get comments like, "Hey, Are you going to breed them?" or, "I got a male Dobie, Would you be interested in breeding?" or "How much did you have to pay for those"...

I sort of get miffed when people ask me about breeding. Only a true idiot would ask about breeding just by seeing your dog out on a walk one day. No questions about the dogs heath or background first - Just questions about breeding. I tell these people that the girls are fixed and walk faster... :no2:

The questions about how much they cost bother me also. I normally just say that it was expensive and I stopped counting because it was making me really depressed to think about it... :no2:

I have also given replies such as "I don't know, These are not my dogs" and "I don't know - Wife wont tell me"

At the park today, I heard another common question and a GREAT answer from the little girls mom... :)

We were getting near our car to go home and saw another family with a boxer getting in their minivan to leave as well. A little girl (between 7 and 9 yrs old I guess) asked her mom, "Mommy, What happened to their ears? Are they hurt?" (Both the girls were posted then...)

I nearly fell out when the little girls mom told her that, "No honey, They are just training the ears to stand up pretty". I could NOT believe that I heard her say that. Smart mom she had! LOL!

Their dog was REALLY fat and I guess lazy. I saw it lay down next to their minivan and the hubby had to pick it up to make it get in! LOL! :) The little girl and her mom got a kick out of watching the girls get in the car. :D They were told to SIT and WAIT (and they DID!) while we opened the car door and fixed their spot and then they jumped up and got in it with NO problem when they were told to LOAD UP! The girls were on leashes then but they still 'listened' like remote controls without any need to do any correcting or tugging on a leash... :)

Under the covers...

Our butts must touch when you tell us both to SIT at the same time...

"I don't know - Wife wont tell me"
this made me laugh.

I can imagine the question about breeding would get old, really fast. With Coopers natural ears, I get, "what breed is he?". They know he is something..lol I am surprised that a lot of people haven't seen a red Dobe.. and in addition to the natural ears, it just really throws some people off.
Thanks for the pics.. the girls are adorable, as always :)

Love it!

I get asked that question about whether I am going to breed my guys a lot, too. And the thing is, even if I wanted to do so, I wouldn't sell a puppy to the ones who ask me that question. And it still amazes me when they ask how much I paid for them. Must be something in the water. I even had one guy tell me I should 'give' him my guys. And he was serious! Needless to say I told him to go buy his own. Most people aren't that invasive though. What I'm reall dreading is all the questions and poor baby comments I'm going to be getting this year since Chloe's leg amputation. It's not that I don't appreciate the sympathy, I just know it will get real old real fast after I've explained it for the hundredth time. I guess this all just goes with the territory of owning a dobe and people not seeing many of then around any more. It think it's that when they see two they just naturally draw the wrong conclusion; that we're going to breed them as if that's all there is to a dobe.

I get a lot of those same questions.

When people ask if I plan to breed her I say that I can't because of the limited registration contract. They always look disappointed but what can you do, right? Its a legal contract. In a way it is a compliment though, they think she is pretty and would like a dog that looks like her and I can't blame them for that.

My neighbors did ask me how much she cost and I didn't think fast enough and told them. Their jaws dropped. They have pits and I think they spent maybe $300 on each pup. I kind of regret telling them, I already look like the little rich preppy girl in a neighborhood of mostly poor Puerto Ricans (2 generations ago they all worked at the mills and then the mill closed and there are no employment opportunities) . Thankfully they all think I am awesome because my dog is awesome.

The ear question is pretty annoying but I only get it when I walk her outside of my neighborhood. For some reason everyone around here used to own a doberman like 10 yrs ago when people were more afraid of the breed, now they have pits, but they understand completely.

I get most annoyed by people asking me if she is mean or if she will bite, asking if she is friendly doesn't bother me as much, it is good manners and doesn't carry the same connotations. It is so frustrating and I feel really bad for Lorelei when people are eying her suspiciously like at any moment she will attack.

I had the cutest kid the other day who came up to me on his bike and starting spewing questions, "what is wrong with the ears?", "what happened to her tail?", "did it hurt when they did the tail/ears?" (I couldn't bring myself to tell him that they are awake when the tails are docked so I lied, oops), "how old is she?", "how big is she going to get?". He was really respectful about it. I asked if he wanted to meet her and he said yes, I told him to stand still with his hand out and let her sniff him, and he did perfectly and Lorelei was happy to let him pet her. I love when little kids approach and ask questions no matter what they are, I actually feel like I can get the point across that dobermans are great dogs, adults not so much.

It's funny, I used to get annoyed and feel sorry for my guys when people asked if they were mean or would they bite. But now that they're older I kind of like it. I take my guys all over the city to different events and don't live in the greatest neighborhood. So when I get asked that question I just say: 'Not as long as I'm with them'. I'm sure in time you'll come to appreciate that one more than you do now.

Haha, I love that response! I am going to have to give that a try if someone says that in that certain tone, you know that tone, right?

Oh, yes I do. I like to keep them guessing even though both my guys are basically big Marmadukes. 'They' don't need to know that. :D

Mary Lou.. I am sure people will be curious... its just our nature. Maybe you could get her a little "cancer survivor" tshirt or collar to wear when you all go out?.. just a thought.

I always here this " Is she purebred?" And I even had one group of business men ( walking behind me in the park) start talking about her and the "know it all " said, nope there is no way that dog is a purebred Doberman. Dobermans are much bigger and different colored. Hmmm and I thought Lexi was big LMAO 80 lbs 29 inches tall

I dont mind when people ask about her being mean. It also depends on who is asking it . I give out different answers. But I do try and stick to the truth. She loves loves loves kids, likes women, and very cautious of men and may snap. And she is very very protective.

I get the breeding thing alot too. People have practically begged me to let her have babies. When she went into heat her tatas got big , so now the common question I get is " How many puppies did she have and do you have any left?"

Oh that would piss me off sooo much! I would have whipped around and let them know what the deal is, an angry woman + doberman= scared "know it all" business men, haha. I can't understand why anyone would think she isn't purebred, she looks very doberman like to me, haha. People do ask me on occasion if Lorelei is a doberman but that is because very few people have seen a fawn doberman. The color is very confusing...

I get the "are you going to breed them?" thing all the time too. It makes me wonder why everyone seems to think that if you have 2 purebred dogs of the same breed you should breed them... :hairpull:

The latest one I got this weekend was saying "Boris is a Doberman, right? What breed is Della?" because she's not the typical black/rust most people are used to seeing. Then I have to go and explain the accepted AKC colors, blah, blah to convince them she really is a Dobe... :no2:

just two days ago we went to the park, two guys were walking, saw Apollo and said, it must be a weimeraner mix, you just must be kidding me. i just said nope its a pure bred Doberman "sigh" and its a blue and yes there are 4 colors of dobe's and then just walked away.

I figure that all of you would understand how irritating the questions about breeding are...

Next time someone asks me that I am going to tell them that it would be a violation of my parole and see how they react! LOL! :)

Sorry about the pics not being related to the topic. People are here are bad about wanting to see pics so I just tossed some out there to keep the peace! LOL! :)

FWIW - The bottom picture is a great example of how clean a Dobie can stay... The girls are close to 4 mos old now. ONE of the butts in that picture has only had one bath in her life so far... She had that bath at 6 weeks old... She gets the occaisional brushing/wipedown and vacuum job once in a while but she stays clean as a whistle and has NO real smell to her at all. Her sister gets into more stuff and had needed 3 or 4 baths now (while her clean sister just watches!). She smells like strawberries!

She still does not 'need' a bath but she will get one tonight. Partly so her sister can watch for a change and partly so she can start getting used to the idea. They can both smell like strawberries! Hehehe! :)

I remember one time, when I had my guys at Petco, some woman coming up to me wanting to know what Herc was and insisting that he wasn't a pure breed doberman because of his size. She was absolutely sure he was 'mixed' with something because she knew dobes weren't ever that big. Herc stands almost 29 1/2 inches at the shoulders and weighs 101 pounds. I loved telling her he was indeed a pure breed dobe and registered as such with the AKC. What gall.

It isn't so much what people say that really bothers me....it is how they cringe and avoid us that really hurts!!

you know... nobody ever questions Fates color... thats kind of interesting... mind you she is super dark brown. They always get the 'gorgeous dogs' comment, One biker guy passing me said 'DOBERMANS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK' i promptly sent my dobes after him with our KILL command........

ok maybe not, but coulda been cool

Ok so shoot me...I've never had anyone say anything except wut a good looking doberman that is or where did you get him...when we tell he was found wondering the streets of Detroit that's when I get the wow really...:eekwtf: *%$&# let him go??? I got a few times wut a skinny rottie....:tantrum:

We went to get my new glasses and Teddy came in with Logan cuz it was hot in the car, everyone in the place was wow cool doberman, and all asked if they could pet him...of corse he turns on the charm and good behavior!!!!
