What do you do to groom your Dobie??

Hercules has trouble with his anal glands every so often but I've never done anything about it because it seems to resolve itself in a couple of days. I wash all his bedding though because it stinks up the bedroom when that happens. Until I found this forum I didn't know that anything could be done about this. :yuck:

oh yea, Karma too... same deal it comes and goes, she has a really heavy metal smell about her... like you held a bunch of coins.. then you smell your hands. very strong.

Do any of you have dogs that roll in "dead" stuff in the spring? summer? Fall? Anytime they find it? LOL
LOL! I think they find any time of year is prime for rolling in stuff.... :D

I could have shot our Boxer more than once when it was time to go to either work or bed and he found something "prime" to roll in. Big bath time.... LOL!

Thanks for the recipe Becky. I'll have to try it.

I'm safe right now Jan... 2 feet of snow but in another month. yekkk... lol I just hate it. They find the stuff that is still "gooshy... " Bo is the worst. Did I tell you guys I had him on a diet and he has gained weight? Yep, instead of 1 fat roll he now has 3. I feed him less so he scrafs his down and then switches with Ernie - while retard pointy ears is "licking" his dish - Bo is eating his food... don't you just love dogs??? roflmao

LOL! I know a lot of people who diet and gain weight too.

At least our GSP didn't necessarily have to roll in all bad stuff. Here's a shot of him with a perfume sample out of a mag. He went nuts for them the second I took the wrapper of a mag (I hate the damn things). And if someone came over with too much perfume on they couldn't figure out why he kept rubbing on them. LOL!

our JRT......is the only dog I have ever had that will and does roll in ANYTHING yuckie! she is 100% deaf and a runner. if a door opens up she is out it like a little rocket! and you sure cant just call her back......so she just goes on and on and on and QUICK! she can be a mile down the road before you even get your shoes on. she will come if you get infront of her to give the come signal hahahahahahaha! anyway.......after every escape no matter how short she is covered in green stinky poo! that dog is the stinkiest dog on earth!

my dobes.......baths? do I have to bathe them? gezzzzzzzz zeus is one and has never had a bath. I imagine if he stunk bad enough I would hose him down :)

I bathe almost never...
I file his nails every 3rd day
I shave his whiskers with a 30 blade
I use the listerine mixture to wipe him down once or twice a week

It seems that most who commented on this thread bathe your own dog...is it wrong to have a groomer do it or just a preference?
Nothing wrong with having a groomer do it. Some people just don't want to fool with it themselves. I'm a groomer myself and I've bathed plenty of dogs, dobermans included in my day :)

Just a matter of preference and what your dog can handle. Some dogs that are not properly socialized should not go to a groomer or at least not just any groomer. We take our two to the groomer sometimes. I have a bad back and its hard to wrestle them for baths in our tub.

How often do you bath? I don't really bathe Aer, unless she starts to have that doggy smell.
Brush? Not really since she doesn't need it that often.
Do you clip whiskers and ears?? No and no.
What shampoo do you use?? French Vanilla dog shampoo, it's supposed to mouterize it but she instead gets white flakes.

When I don't feel like shampooing her we take her to the groomers. Aer loves getting her nails colored too. Her and our toy poodle go too, if Aer doesn't then she gets upset that she didn't get a chance to go too. It does tire out both dogs pretty good.

How often do you bath?
Not very often unless it's very obvious, like he stinks! lol or has very obvious dirt on him. We live on sandy soil and most of the time a quick rubdown with a towel is enough. When I do 'bathe' him, it's actually a shower! (in winter) I have a walk in shower in my bathroom and had a long hand held showerhead installed just for him. I have to get in there with him to do it but there's no way I could ever get him in a tub! :nono: This works very well. Then we take him in the sun room by the fire to dry off.

In summer, I use the hose in the garage which has hot and cold water and just scrub him down in there! Then I release him on the sunny deck to dry! :D

Brush?
Rarely! Again, a going over with a fluffy towel.

Do you clip whiskers and ears??
Nope

What shampoo do you use??
Anything with Oatmeal since it's supposed to be good for dry skin. I won't use anything else on him.

As for the groomer, I've never given that a moments thought! lol I've never had a breed that needed to be clipped so grooming was always just something I did myself. But now that you're making me think about it, I can see certain situations that would make it advantageous. I have nothing against it, I'm just used to doing it all myself. :D

So doing trimming his wiskers off is ok ? I wanted to trim all of Triggers wiskers but I'm hesitant to do it. I heard the dog needs them then I hear they dont kinda confused. Can any one shed a little clarity ? Thanks

Hmmmm, I've never trimmed my Dobermans whiskers. I'll bet they do for shows. I get that it can be for 'looks' but to me, that's my Doberman! lol

Same with horses. With horses I KNOW they use the whiskers .......feel in the dark, etc. I don't know if dogs need them as much. But it just might be a matter of choice. I seldom trim my horses whiskers for the same reason I don't trim my Dobe. I feel it helps them and sometimes I am more about that than looks. :)

I’ve never trimmed whiskers, either. I’ve not seen any need to. I believe some groomers trim the whiskers as part of a tidy up but I really don’t see any need. They use their whiskers as a sixth sense so I’ve always just left them alone.

Their whiskers are surprisingly sharp. Idk the answer to this question but I do know that cats use theirs so they can determine whether they will fit into something. So a wider cat will have longer whiskers. :smileycat:

I shaved the ears and whiskers on my first red boy when he showed.
I didn’t do it with Gracie or my twins I have now, although I really want to trim their ears for a cleaner look but haven’t yet.

I use a horse shaver for whiskers on the face and head. Quick and easy. They also seem to like it. Then I use a beard trimmer for ears, the tuck up area, backs of legs, butt and tail.

With my first Dobe, I liked to trim the hair inside the ears. I would still prefer that look today but I don't make time.

I also used to trim the hair around their nails. That makes the paws and nails look extra spiffy.

I also would trim the little stinger at the end of the docked tail.

I have never trimmed whiskers though. That seems a bit much; and I too wonder if it would alter their senses or abilities or quality of life. I know they do it for conformation showing though.

I used to always shave our horses whiskers when I was showing but I haven't bothered with the dogs since I just like the look.
