Well they have finally arrived!!

When I crate, my pups are ready to go in. They have had a long morning run and swim and they chill out from the heat outside.
As they have aged they are not crated as often. Before when they were younger they have destroyed so many things in the house like chewing Sheetrock, couch, linens, baseboards etc. so yes crating was necessary for their safety. As they have aged they can be trusted and are seldom crated except to eat or when they want to go in on their own.
My comment was to crate them when puppies until they are trustworthy being left alone. With my two I will not ever leave them alone together because they will start arguing with each other and I don't want to come home to bleeding dogs should it ever escalate.
That was my point with the puppies being free in the house. Too many things to get into that two puppies will do whereas one may not.
When I have to be gone for any length of time then my female will be in the bedroom with my beagle and female cat and Bogie will be in the living room. We don't have a lot of property down here anywhere that allows them to run free that doesn't have other (untrained) dogs blazing through so I use the ocean and nature trails for their exercise.
I did not crate my prior dobes but have learned with these two that it has made them easier to train and keep your home intact and less medical bills for FBS.
When I am home my front door is always open so they come and go downstairs as they please but because Bogie is a jumper he cannot be trusted with access to the outdoors without me here. (Momma's boy):D
Edit here: when I crate it is for their safety not my convenience. But I do agree that many have abused crating dogs. Not in my house, even my birds have free reign outside of their cages. :)

I for sure understand safety is super important..I have a situation that is really pretty unusual so I really get to spoil mine but when I was growing up the dogs spent quite a long day in the kennel..I am very blessed that I can spoil mine rotten..in fact it can become a drawback of sorts..they are so Velcro that they have a hard time being separated from mommy at all... They howl like the Hound of the Baskerville when I have to leave them in the house to photograph wildlife. even if it's just for a short while..lol Well I only have Jake now and he really complains ..He wants to be out there chasing away everything that I'm trying to sneak up on. NO worries I for sure know exactly what you meant about crating ..I never used a crate at all for many years and many dogs but when we bought Flynn home it was great for house training and I would recommend that to anyone..when you can't watch a puppy they for sure are safer in the crate for my convenience as well as for their safety...I think it make house training easier too when you can't be right there watching..it makes for a lot fewer accidents. :)

Poor Zeus had a little more leaking than his sister so they wrapped his head. He wasn't too found of that. Last night must have dug at it enough to get gause out so had to take him to vet to repost.
Got him home and he must have shook it just right to pop the post back out. Idk if this vet is dumb and isn't posting it right or if Zeus just knows his way to shake it out.
May try to take off and post ourselves but kinda scared because it's still fresh surgery.

Zoey sitting like a good girl!! Hasn't messed with hers once!

I would not have them posted at this point. Get an Elizabethan collar put it in them and let those ears free of any tape so they can heal. They should never put tape across sutures!! To much risk of infection and inflammation.

I can't help with the ear situation but Zoey is handling this like a proper lady. Zues...well that's boys for ya!

Poor guy... :( I agree that the vet shouldn't have wrapped over the sutures until they're out and the edges are healed. I would remove the posts and leave them out until they're ready on both pups. After that it's better to post them yourself since most vets don't do as good a job as you can once you get the hang of it.

The "zen collars" are nice as far as a deterrent but they can still reach their ears if they try

Won't an Elizabeth collar push the ears forward or should we not worry about that as of right now?

Not really. Usually we would glue the unsutured side of ear to cups so sutured edge would heal. But the collars with just ears hanging won't hurt them. It will prevent scratching them and ripping out sutures.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I work midnight's so my brave wife is at home trying to comfort them and since we are both new dobe owners, it is kind of stressful. I just hope the dumb vet did a decent job on the actual crop. They had good pictures of previous crops and majority of the reviews reference crops were great. Didn't see much for the after care though..which make sense now:groan:.

Thank God for you guys and this forum!!

Well some sad news:(... After a few weeks of training and no progress, we have given Zoey to a good friend of ours. For some reason she was overly aggressive with Zeus and even attacked him at times:groan:. She was fine by herself outside the crate but as soon as Zeus was out she was so focused on him and wouldn't leave him alone. We had to keep one of them crated at all times and it just wasn't fair.

We are glad that our friends took Zoey (now Moxy) and we can at least see her still:thumbsup2:. They are both doing great and happily spending lots of time outside their crates.

On a side not I'm posting some pictures of Zeus crop job. Let me know what you think...

I'm sorry it didn't work out with Zoey but I'm glad you found a good home where you can still see her and keep up with her. I don't blame you for not wanting to crate and rotate all the time. Was your breeder okay with it? In many cases they'd rather take them back themselves if it doesn't work out.

It looks great!

She said she would buy her back if we wanted. Our thoughts were why not ask family /friends first and see if we can still "keep her in the family."

Hopefully can get them together again when they're older.

It was hard but we didn't think it was fair that one always had to be crated.

*********Update**********

Zeus is growing like a weed and I'm starting to get a little worried how big he is actually going to be!!:groan: For the most part him and our rescue dog seem to get along great. I have noticed that Zeus is more interested in rough housing with Pirate than actually playing.

Today for instance I was outside with them both throwing the football for them to go get. Pirate really enjoys fetch but Zeus was more into the chase aspect of it and was almost plowing over Pirate for fun...or at least it seemed. He would run dead sprint into Pirate and it looked like he was trying to take him off his feet. Was just curious if this was Zeus trying to show him Alpha? which is why he could care less about the ball or if I'm just over thinking it...

I'm also curious if anyone has any specific ways they've trained their pup to keep them off the counter. Zeus is coming more and more comfortable jumping up and taking stuff off the counter, plates or even the hot pan. I'm hoping to nip this is in the butt before it becomes a habit/problem.

As always, thanks in advance!!

Glad Zeus is growing and healthy!

The type of play you describe sounds like what Oji would do at the dog park. Really only interested in chasing, and if he could catch them, he'd plow into them. Well, that and bite at the top of their necks as he caught up to them. Heck, I think I've seen Oji paw at the dog he's chasing, much like a big cat chasing a Gazelle.

We've never had a problem with counter hunting or surfing. We have just absolutely outlawed it from the start. They never try it.

Sounds like normal Dobie play style to me. They rather play with another dog than a ball if given the choice.

As for size, the speed of growth might make you freak out. They do stop growing all the sudden. K got to full height at 10 months and I was worried too but he hasnt grown even half an inch since then!

We are still working on it. *sigh* lol I discovered that "grammy" would leave bits of food on the counter where Mila could get to it SO she could get it. I don't know how many times I've said, "then you're rewarding the bad behavior." :pullhair:

So yeah, I personally think that ensuring they can't get ANYTHING will teach them to stop. Mila has lessened her surfin, but if she can get that one lone thing we leave within reach on accident, she's like woohoo! Doing it more! And she's reached er . . . whatever height, but it's tall enough that most of our counter she can get to. I'm gonna have to remeasure and post in the puppy thread, lol.

Oh, and plowing them over? Oh yeah. We have Shih Tzus and Mila finds nothing funner than rolling them over, which is why she doesn't usually go out with them, haha. Or the other day she slammed into me just because and now I have a bruise on my knee and slight swelling. After spaying, and as she gets older (she's just over a year), it's calming as I train her not to (my mother is 77 and can't afford to be knocked into like that), she's better, but it was worse before.
