Skynyrd at vet getting stitches

Im at the vet right now with Skynyrd. He is getting stitches in his right rear leg. He was running around the backyard chasing squirrels like he does everyday. I was sitting out there with him. When we got ready to go inside I was wiping his feet off and drying him with a towel and I noticed blood all over the towel. I started checking him out and found this huge cut in his back leg. A huge flap of skin was hanging there. What the heck?! He didnt even whine or limp or act like anything was wrong. I can't believe he did this in the backyard. When we go out running he is going through woods, creeks, etc and he gets hurt in the backyard! Crazy. They are having to sedate him before they start. Poor Skynyrd

Ive been trying to think about what he cut himself on. I think it might have been this green flower guard thing. Its metal.

Yikes, let us know how he is doing when he wakes up. How many stitches? That green metal guard could be the culprit. Did you find blood on it?

I havent checked it yet. As soon as I get home Im gonna look. Its the only thing I can think of that is sharp enough to do that. He runs the same route around those 2 trees everyday probably 10 times a day. It was raining today and everything was wet and slick.

Slippery conditions will do it. Kaiser had a bad habit of running down the basement stairs which are slippery (not carpeted) and it has metal nosing. He cut himself open on a hind leg there too, not enough for stitches, but enough for obvious blood. It now has a callous, so although he has been taking the stairs better since then, he must still be hitting it

The vet just came out and told me that he had a seizure when they were waking him up. Now im scared!

He is in the right place for them to handle this. Try to stay calm and keep us posted oh how he is doing.

I'm so sorry to hear about this all! He is in the right place. There is nothing that can be done in the moment for seizures other than calmness, they usually do not last long. Then the vet can assess why it happened in the first place and address that. How old is Skynyrd again?

I'm so sorry to hear about this all! He is in the right place. There is nothing that can be done in the moment for seizures other than calmness, they usually do not last long. Then the vet can assess why it happened in the first place and address that. How old is Skynyrd again?

He just turned 3 in March. She said she thinks it was a reaction to the Ketamine.

Ok. So we just got home. They had to wheel him out on a gurney bc he can't walk yet bc of the medication. They gave him Valium bc of the seizure. He is out of it. I had to get a neighbor to help me carry him inside. I cant believe they sent him home like this. Im afraid he is going to stop breathing.

Did they give you any instructions on what to watch out for while he's on valium? How does he look out of his eyes? Does he look at you? I would call them to ask how long he's going to be like this for. I would also put a towel under him in case he has any potty accidents.

Thats a good idea (towel under him). I just talked to vet. She said he will probably be like this all night. At first he just had a blank stare. Now he is blinking a little more. When I went out to my car to get his medicine he tried to get up but couldnt. I just made him lay down and im sitting next to him on the floor. Ive never brought a dog home like this before. They are usually more alert

Make sure he's hydrated enough. Keep an eye on his gums and maybe use ice cubes so he has enough water. I wouldn't feed him due to choking risk. Also, you don't want to worry the poor fella, so try to keep a neutral energy around him.

She said he probably wouldnt eat tonight. Im supposed to give him his antibiotics with food. She said just start tomorrow. He is trying to sit up now but can't. Just lays back down. Im just trying to keep him calm like you said. Ill definitely do the ice cubes. Good idea!

But the good thing is that he's home. ❤ I, for one, would rather he was home with me where I can watch him rather than at the vet all night. Since he can't seem to get up I would definitely have several towels under him. I'm sure he's going to have to potty soon. Poor thing. He's just going to have to sleep some of it off. It will be a comfort to him knowing that you were there. We'll be thinking of you all night and sending good thoughts.

I was so worried when he was at the vet and I couldn't see him or touch him. Im definitely glad he is home too. It's just scary seeing him like this. Thank you for your good thoughts, it means a lot to me.

I've never heard of a vet sending an animal home in this condition! Bless you and Skynyrd both. Usually they make sure the animal comes out of anesthesia, at least to the point of being able to walk to the car. I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this. Keeping Skynyrd in my thoughts tonight, prayers for gentle recovery from all the trauma. And for you too! Update us as you can.
