Riley got his first boo boo!

Riley and I went for a walk. Something I try to do every day because he is NOT a dog that can stay in the house. Mental games just don't do it for him.
Bundle up and off we go! He stays a little ahead of me and will stop and look back every now and again. I see him stop and look down at his foot and then start running at me. Thought that was strange until I saw the red snow! He's bleeding pretty good. No idea what happened, I just sent him to the house. We get inside and I see he has torn his dew claw, well the skin where it connects. I grabbed a towel to use for pressure and call the Vet. Thank God they are still there and agree to wait for us because they had just finished the last patient. After discussing options we decide to stitch it and see if it will heal or remove it at a later date because he had eaten.
So far he is leaving the bandage alone. Not sure if that will last or not.
He is definitely milking it for all he can get!

And yes, that is my shirt ( the solid blue under his leg) is laying on. The weirdo likes to keep a piece of clothing I have worn with him.

Awwwww, "Owie, Mama! Come look."

Hope he heals fast and leaves it alone. How great the vet took you quickly. Is he far from you?

I was worried because it was Saturday. It was perfect timing!
Is he far from you?
Nope, about 5 miles or so. We really lucked out with him. He is definitely not in this to make a buck! Extremely reasonable prices, in fact I would call him cheap! He and his staff are very accommodating and do what they can to keep you from driving to the city to an expensive emergency vet.

We also got lucky on what an easy fix this was. I thought it was goung to mean surgery to remove his dew claw. Man! Did that thing bleed! Riley was exceptionally good for the process. He just let the Vet numb him up and pop a couple of stitches in. I just wish I knew what happened.

Oh man! You are lucky!! He's a Godsend!

Heal up big boy! I'm sure it is a whole new set of problems with a band aid on....hope he is a good boy, and leaves it alone!

Sounds like he's a good stoic lad about things. Bet it heals up fast and also bet he'll want to be back up to full speed before you are ready to let him! ❤️

Definitely! He never even made a sound.

He already has ants in his pants. I have to take him out on a leash and he's not a fan. I'm praying it will heal up and he won't have to have surgery.
My Vet didn't want to do the surgery because he didn't want to put him under because Riley had eaten. So we decided to give healing a shot. I just keep repeating Please heal!

We were up front checking out and the tech says he still has the chart. Let me get it. Next thing I know the Vet walks up there and says I think $50 oughta cover it. I almost fell over. My husband says I hate to argue with you but I don't think that even covers your time. But he insisted.
We live in a GREAT community. Lots of homesteaders and folks that help thy neighbor. They believe in the barter system and it works well.

Wow that's awesome; especially since it would be considered an emergency call!

He doesn't even do the extra charge for emergencies. He says that is just life happening.
There is not a lot of fancy stuff like computer systems, yeah, they write in a chart! But they are seem to be there because they want to help animals. It's refreshing actually.

Riley got his sutures out today. He's one happy boy! I think he ran around the property for an hour straight without stopping.
I think this just might fix it and we won't have to have surgery. :woot:

Almost forgot the pic I got after he finally slowed down.
He lost some weight over this process. He has some ribs showing and a few other places that you can tell he surpassed lean to thin. Now doubt he'll fill back out now that he can work up an appetite.
