Removing the baby gate

Was the gate to separate Kaiser and the cat? Is she venturing downstairs more?

My first boy was taught not to climb the stairs through a verbal detterant and reward system. He caught on pretty quickly that he wasn’t to climb the stairs.

Keep at it. Paws on the first step are the limit I would think.

Really it's to keep him off the carpeted areas.

It was also to give the cat more security and time to adjust but she has been gate fighting him so we removed the gate as a lesson to her as well haha.

She's still afraid of him it seems but he's almost 2 and that gate is really annoying so we figured we'd try removing it.

We will try training him next. Agree, I don't want him past the first step.

Thanks! He's not allowed upstairs as a rule and the upstairs is all carpet. It's easier to draw the line right at the stairs where the carpet starts.

Ah gotcha. Makes sense, avoids dirtying it lol. I have to rent a carpet cleaner person and have them clean the poop and vomit stains out of the carpet in my olaxe im moving out of. Lmao.

And if there's an accident at least it won't be 7 poops worth lol.

Keep an eye on him on the hardwood too. Kaiser went through a floor licking phase

So what are the actual training steps to keep him off the stairs? I tried today and it didn't work.

I used raw steak bits yesterday to train staying out of the pantry and it worked like magic.

Today, no steak, I use cheese - his favorite - Dutch Gouda. Now I'm sorry because his gas is monsterous.

It is cute haha. I think me stopping to take a pic everytime he's violating the rules is reinforcing the wrong behavior though lol. It's soooooo hard!

Possibly, actually. Is he normally leashed to the railing like that or is it you doing that so he'll stay so you can grab a pic? I think you've answered your own issue here if its the 2nd half of the question. :p

Prompt correction and make him get off. Stalling the correction while you stand there, perfectly ok with it (to take a pic) only reinforces the behavior in the end. Be more prompt and clear to him.

I wouldn't let him on any steps. This should be easier than saying "ok you can step up on one step but no more!" The act of stepping up will be easier and clearer to say no to over the number of steps...

We tether him to the railing before going for a walk. It's easier to get him ready that way too - jacket, prong, etc. He gets so excited seeing my hb put on his boots that he starts to interfere with him lacing up which makes my hb mad which doesn't help anyone so the tethering is necessary. If I'm standing there I ask Kaiser to 'back up' from my hb which also works. My hb just doesn't say the right commands because he makes the assumption that Kaiser should know better lol.

With the baby gate coming off, he now shows interest in going up the stairs as high as the leash will allow. In the pics I did allow him to stay longer so I could take the pic. Once I took the pic I told him 'off' and he came down.

I'll try using the tethered time to get him to stay off the stairs and work on focussing on me instead. Eventually I'd like to not tether him there either, but baby steps I guess.

These Dobes are so smart...GOING OUTSIDE......Grace knows when we are going out by the shoes I wear...(flip flops inside)...as soon as she sees me get the shoes, the Zoomies start...That's when I sit back down and shake my head and ignore her till she sits on her place...I don't know if the Zoomies will ever stop, but we go no where till they do...I've got this!...:D
Rise Rise Rise....ahahahahahaha
