I have heard many many many times that onions, grapes and raisens are bad for dogs. I have a dog that is obsesses with raw carrots, she also will eat apples. What do you guys suggest to give them? I live in a HUGE farming area, so we get many fruits and veggies for free. What else is bad/toxic for dogs and what is good?

My guys are huge fans of apples :) They also like peeled cucumber and cantaloupe. Carrots not so much... I've heard that avocado is bad for dogs, but just the other day, I saw a TV commercial that was bragging about putting avocado in thier dog food. It was a crappy brand of food anyway.

The Bad -
Many bulb vegetables are poisonous to dogs. Garlic, onions, shallots, chives and leeks all contact N-propyl disulfide, which can cause the destruction of red blood cells and lead to anemia.
All parts of avacado contain persin (sp?) and are dangerous to dogs.
Mushrooms are another sometime toxic veggie.
Grapes and rasins contain toxins known to cause kidney failure.
Corn cobs not a good idea because of bowl obstruction, same for fruits with pits, or large seeds. Apple seeds are also toxic to dogs.

The Good-
broccoli, carrot, sweet potato, squash, celery, beets, spinach ,cabbage, pumpkin, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, pears, mangos, pineapples, apricots, peaches and strawberries. I'm unsure about tomatos as I read conflicting things. Lettuce I'm also unsure about.

!!!!!!????!!!! Never knew about apple seeds. Both our dogs will take apples right off the tree during their season, sometimes a couple a day.I will have to take away the cores from now on.

never heard about avacado either?

I have read before tomato isn't good for them, and the tomato plant itself is poisonous to dogs? I just don't let em around those. It's not like they go out of their way to eat them but when the Dobe was younger(pup) she would go zooming around the yard and nip at the plants as she ran passed. She never tried to take a tomato like she does with apples.

I don't usually feed them a whole apple, they get pieces of mine or whatnot. I like to use carrots and apples and whatever else that's good for them for treats because they eat those up, my dogs (dobe and mix breed) are not too fond of actual dog treats. Nonnie (dobe) loves ice. So, I treat her with ice when training. She goes nuts when she hears the ice machine on the firdge.

You are a wealth of knowledge, thank you!! So, does the same go for animals as it does for humans, raw is better? I know that most uncooked fruits and vegetables have more nutrients.
