Rio is a beautiful boy and he looks so obedient and sweet. <3 <3I think it’s a little bit of both. If you pet his hair the opposite direction, the tips are black but the rest of the strand is light tan to silver. He’s like a chameleon dog lol. I found this description of what’s going on with sable dogs that explains it much better than I could:
“There is more at work than just the color that the dog shows. A sable dog can carry sable with black & tan, bi-color, or black recessive, or carry 2 copies of sable. Each of which is going to yield a different coat color/pattern in adulthood. Then there are the genes which control pigment, which can have a big effect on coloring.
Sables generally go through a phase when they loose their puppy coat and get very light. Then the adult guard hairs grow in and they darken again. How much they darken depends on color and pigment genes. Black and tans are generally born dark, then lighten as they age. Bi-colors and blacks generally don't change much if at all from puppyhood to adulthood.”

I'm on board with Rubie's vibe - Can we just go home already?
