Parvo in the dog park

So Odin is almost 4 months old now! He's got all his shots done and is very healthy. I'm home with my parents for the next 2 weeks before headed back up to Lubbock for summer classes with him. Apparently another dog got Parvo while I've been gone in the dog park area of my apartment complex. Is it possible for him to still get sick? I really don't want to risk it.

Always possible. Vaccination does not guarantee immunity. You would have to have him titer tested to see if he is actually immune or not. But honestly, I'd still try to avoid the area anyways. Parvo is no joke and for some reason dobies (and rotts) are particularly sensitive to it.

Yes that's scary and Parvo is more prevalent than we think. Even though I've never heard about actual cases around here, our vet said he treats a lot of pups with it.
If he's through his shots chances are better but it could happen.

My vet told me that Parvo can "live" in the ground for many months. (My neighbor was fostering a litter of puppies that had it - they couldn't be saved - we have not been on their property since). I'd stay away he is still very young. Better safe than sorry.

I hear a dog has a runny tummy I look if I see blood these days after. I did read it has around 72 hours window period.
You can bring it home with your shoes passing the area even!
However I took my dog to park from 7 weeks old but we don't have parvo in this area according to her vet for years. Still I get scared and watch for sick dogs.

okay thanks for the replies guys! I'll be sure to avoid that area now. Gotta find a new place for him to potty :banghead:

I pulled this up from the archives and thought it was worth a read on the subject.
Parvovirus

Parvo can live in the environment for months. I would avoid taking your puppy to the park as I doubt they have taken the necessary measures to clean it properly. There are other and better places to take your puppy for socialization and exercise. Dog parks, even apartment parks, are a haven for disease and dog fights.
