Partial Spay Anyone?

Jazz was spayed young, my fault through ignorance, and has spay incontinence. It only takes a once a week Stilboestrol 1mg tablet to totally control. I would consider OSS in future if I still lived where stray male dogs were likely.
Was it @Tropicalbri's girl Bacall who developed some incontinence even though she was spayed when she was mature? If so it is always a concern.

I think certain breeds are more prone to it, including the Doberman. I don't know the exact reason though.

Why does spaying cause incontinence?
Urinary Incontinence

The proper function of urinary tract tissue is dependent upon adequate exposure to estrogen and after a pet's ovaries are removed, her estrogen levels are low. Lack of estrogen may cause the urethral sphincter (a muscle used to control the exit of urine) to relax and release urine involuntarily.Mar 11, 2021

Thanks. Seems that if ovaries were left, then UI would be of decreased incidence perhaps. Interesting .

Yeah, after I posted my question I did read up more and it states the estrogen levels. Fingers crossed none of us have to face that with our girls!

Our Stella had incontinence when as she got older. And that is what the vet told us, that it happens to females that have been spayed a long time because of lack of hormones. At first she just leaked a little only when she was asleep because her muscles were relaxed in sleep. It got to be more over time. As she continued to age it became more that was leaking. She slept in a recliner and we bought big washable pads that covered that chair and anywhere else she layed down. In the last weeks of our Stellas's life (DCM) as she weakened she would leak drops as she walked across the room. We got her through a dog pound and we had to get her spayed when we did. Vets weren't sure of her age and 2 different vets estimated her to be somewhere between 1 1/2 and 3 years old at that time. She lived to be 12ish.

Stella was well loved, and it's wonderful she lived to be 12.

What I wonder is why some but not others? My Doberman from 20 years ago I had spayed after her first heat cycle, at about 8 or 9 months. She lived to be 11 and never had any incontinence at all.
