Really glad Trixie is settling in with so little trouble so soon. I was thinking you were going to have to educate her about almost everything but she must have had some reasonable handling somewhere along the line. So many people, me included, would have been really wary about taking on a dog who showed apparent aggression issues, and we would have been doing her an injustice!

she needs education on everything lol. She is leashed when out of the crate in the house. However right now, all time out of the crate is structured for now. She is easily amped up, so she starts jumping around. I’m probably going to have this structure until the board and train because she easily flips out. I’ve taught her to sit consistently and walk on leash, however I’m taking everything slow because it’s all new to her and she easily gets amped up and she was just spayed. I’ve never had an altered dog, so I’m paranoid of her getting hurt. So I’ve been going slow.

It's so good to read that overall..she's is doing well in a family enviroment. I can't even find words for how wonderful it is to read this story of your new girl.

It's back to the "unknowns of what you inherited when she adopted you guys". Collecting mental notes and connecting dots.


We had a problem with our youngest being spastic and jumpy in the house when we first brought him home.

If he was inside with the people we got him from...he was in a crate.....he was never let out of the crate inside the house....when he left the crate it was to put out in the back yard..alone.

It took him some time to adjust to being in the house and not crated. He was terrified of my husband when we first got him home, he wasn't aggressive with my husband....but any time my husband walked into the room, stood up from sitting down or raised his voice even a little...Bam would head to his crate at warp speed....so my husband had to do a lot of "stop, think, slow down".


She's making progress at such a great rate!! Bless your wife, you (and Rex..LOL) for doing this for her!!!!

Just a heads up in the event you experience this.

We see a lot of urinary incontinence in this breed that have been spayed early. My female has it and she was spayed just under the 18mo time.

I started noticing wet spots on her bedding and her constantly cleaning herself.
I started restricting water intake earlier than I normally did and it still occurred. I brought her to work with me and did a UA w/Sed. It was negative. I knew it was incontinence because my prior girl had it. They had put her on Proin 50. The drug of choice for urinary incontinence.
It’s like giving speed to the dog.
I finally pulled Gracie off the Proin 50 and got her started on DES.
It has to be compounded from the pharmacy with a script from your vet, but it is soooo much safer and cost wise is Less than 1/10th of Proin.
Once you start it (DES) you will use it daily for the first week, then taper down each week until you are only giving it once every two to three weeks. It’s a 1mg dose.
The Proin 50 is very expensive and is given twice daily for life. It can affect the CNS, cause hypertension, agitation, hyperactivity (restlessness) vomiting, anorexia among many others. PPA (Proin) is a List 1 chemical because it can be used to make methamphetamine.
PPA is Phenylpropanolamine.
This is why I chose the old school method of DES 1mg. DES is (Diethylstilbestrol) a synthetic hormone used to treat urinary incontinence and we order it from a compound pharmacy.

I am not saying Trixie will develop it but wanted to let you know just in case and what your options are with treating it.

thanks, this was and is a worry for me. So far she’s been holding it pretty well. But if it starts I will definitely ask for that medication.

Yes, she doesn’t have the accidents anymore and I just make sure she gets the medication on schedule. I like that you can adjust how often you give it and that you can work up to needing it only once a week or two or even three weeks once it’s established in her system. Whereas the Proin is twice a day everyday and has a much lower window of effectiveness, especially if you miss a dose.

She is a pretty girl. I bet she is loving the raw diet. Her system has to be feeling so much better.

yeah, she really likes it. This is my wife’s dog, so she hand feeds her every morning and night. She’s learned that not sitting and sitting still equals no food. The dog so far has learned to sit and to enter her crate. However I’m not expecting huge bounds and leaps in the beginning as she has along ways to go. Specially with learning how to chill out.

She is a puppy yet. I think she will learn to chill as she matures. My female did but she still has those moments of hyped up crazy behavior. She will start crap with Bogie by walking by him and body slamming him with her butt. Then she acts all innocent. I know when she is winding up because she does the hammer paw play bow. You can hear her paws hitting the floor from another room. The redheads are true comedians. Lol

poor girl has giardia, I just picked up her antibiotics and will begin administering her them tonight at feeding.

Good news wise though, ruffland was able to expedite their handling and get her new crate out same day as ordering so her new crate arrives tomorrow and her primo pad come in Friday or Saturday. Her e collar came in yesterday.

just and update. She’s settling well, had a few annoying wtf moments but overall she’s a pretty cool dog. Her cone comes off tomorrow, her spay Incision healed fairly well. However I’m overly paranoid and she’s in her crate most the day. She comes out for food, bathroom and she gets two walks a day equal to about a mile or 2 each. Then a 10 minute break to walk around the yard. After she heals her activity will increase, however she’s a bit of a spazz and moved around too fast which scares me of opening up her wound.

I feel bad for the amount of crating though.

Don't. Imagine how much worse it would be if she did mess up the healing process or worse she and Rex tangled. The crate is love for her.

It's good to read she is settling in so well. The first few months of taking in a dog you don't know much about history wise..is a lot of "WTF WAS THAT???" And learning the dog's individual personality and what is left over from that unknown history. I always spent a lot of time holding my breathe...waiting for the next "OH BOY" thing to pop up...but..there is an end to that...LOL.

Just remember to breathe!!!!
