My new pup was born Feb. 12!

So far, I have Katyusha comin' in hot from time to time to play bow, but, as with most things Katyusha it's full send or full stop, so she has scared the little Zastava a few times. I have not intervened, but I did make a comment to Katyusha today like "geez girl, ya might wanna come in a little slower, cuz the little one is scared".

Be VERY careful at this age... she still is so small and your girl quite large in comparison to her, she could really hurt her without trying to. I typically keep the free running together at zero until the puppy gets quite some size on them. Its a good time anyways to focus on training with the pup and have the pup bond more with you than the other resident dogs. I allow them couch time together with me right there so no one is running around like lunatics, lol but they still can get some good interaction with one another!

with Olive and Elroy..they absolutely adore each other- how special is that?

The closer they are in age, the more easily they bond to each other. Olive and Elroy are only a few months apart so they basically see one another as littermates/BFFs

You mean sometimes yours aren't lunatics ?

mostly kidding, but I do take your warnings seriously (I would never not take experience or success seriously). I had to learn this when Katyusha moved in and Thor would air snap at her because she was full of herself! He never would have hurt her intentionally but a small miscalculation would have been the end of her, so, supervised or separate they were, until she was his weight. By then, Thor settled much and showed a more relaxed self. Not going to mis-portray this, she would have deserved a missed air snap by him, but it was best to just prevent it, as it would have otherwise devastated us all. These girls are well watched (and not able to be physically together when I can't watch them), but so far, the need for intervention or separation has been low or non-existent. Thor was different. One minute he was giving his big fluffy butt to let her sleep on, the next he wasn't having her. Katyusha and Zastava are much easier to monitor, as they each are consistently reserved about the other.

A larger dog even trotting around excitedly or jumping around could knock the puppy over, land on them, paw slap them in play etc and cause accidental injury. Dobes can at times be quite clumsy and don't realize their size difference.

We got to this tonight. Zastava tried to put her chin on Katyusha's leg for an afternoon nap and Katyusha kinda bolted. but after another 6 or 8 hours, we got to a place of her accepting Zastava's affection. I understand this a bit better now, I think. Got me thinking that I should switch which side of me they are usually on when we are on the couch, because if there were to be a knock at the door, I know Katyusha isn't going to pay attention to where her paws land in order to get to it, and that could truly be devastating when she tries to cross over the little one. And also to watch these other activities as well.

I see it your way too. But I think if you don't own a Doberman, a barking one is definitely more alarming than a not barking one. And many folks are just alarmed that there's a doberman at all, even the quiet ones can be perceived as frightening. Katyushas dad is kinda neat that way, if he wanted to put a stop to you, you'd never know it until it was way too late. He's pretty much absolutely silent, especially in alert mode.

I saw somewhere, a meme or a t shirt perhaps that said "OH my Doberman barked at you. Did you die?" Betting most of us here can identify with that feeling.

We went to a nature area today to practice leash walking. The girl tried to go under a barbed wire fence, and on her way back to me, one of the barbs caught her stitches. She yelped and I felt just awful! I took her into the clinic and they said that all the stitches were ready to be removed, so they just took her in the back and took both ears worth out. Thank God nothing more serious happened, and that her ears were ready.

Ok yes, then the top stitches were ready to come out at 7 days, the bases typically don't come out until day 10 but it looks like your vet did one continuous stitch all the way through including the bell?

thanks! i will probably ask at the next city council meeting whether barbed wire serves a purposes there. I would hate to see a child tangled in it more so than Zastava.

I absolutely detest barbed wire and wish it would be outlawed everywhere. Around here they used to use it for property boundary lines back in the early 1900's so once in a while we still come across some buried under the dirt.

I walked Zastava tonight through the dollar general lot. Someone asked me if I live in the blue house. "Yes. I live in a blue house." "Do you own a bunch of Dobermans? " .. "I own two." They shared a heartbreaking story of a Doberman who needs a loving home, because it's just tied to a trailer all it's life. A young couple who will soon have their first baby ,apparently. I am at my max of 3 dogs per household, but if anyone has room I should have contact info soon.
